Detailed pitch update from the club: https://rochdaleafc.co.uk/pitch-update-5/

The article explains quite a lot about the current pitch issues and what they are trying to do to remedy the issues.

Calling in experts to evaluate the problem and how to go about it will come at a cost but at what cost in possible lost gate income...

Its a bit depressing to read - but at least we have a better sense of what is going on now. The club needs a period of dry weather to get on top of temporary solutions. I suspect we have no choice but to make enquiries of other grounds in the area to get us through February. But the impact on the club at not having home games for the best part of two months will be significant. If the club need to run some events in the bars in the meantime to get some cash in they should say so.

I appreciate that they have also apologised for the inconvenience and cost that many fans have been through with cancellations.

It is depressing to read, but I'm glad they have as from the outside looking in, noone knew if anything was happening about it or if everyone was just praying for a solution. Having clarity of what steps the club are taking, and the explanations about the current situation, covers etc, is appreciated.

Very detailed article so fair play to the club. It does make grim reading.

Surely this is where the benefit of having wealthy owners should come in. We're not expecting them to spend millions on players and wages but the pitch is integral to having a football club and a working pitch is needed to make it sustainable. We must be losing thousands to these postponements and potentially even more if our fixture congestion catches up to us.

Comprehensive article which acknowledges fans questions and concerns with detailed responses.

Excellent example of how good communication fosters better engagement and understanding amongst supporters. The standard has been set, no reason this can’t continue.

Got to feel for the playing side of the club, this uncertainty must be beginning to have a real impact.

Who do you think will be covering the cost of the immediate emergency repairs and any major repairs that can only be done close season

Wouldn't it just be easier if the club, in the same spirit of open communication, just told us?

We don't know. Will it be a cash injection? Will it affect the playing budget if its hundreds of thousands?

Really shocking situation really that a game has been called off on Friday that takes place on the following Wednesday. The forecast for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday is 7 - 9 degrees temps and a bit of light rain/drizzle. Surely work could have been done on these days to get the game playable?

Why do they have to say who is paying for it?

Yes 100% they should be open and transparent with updates on the situation regarding the state of the pitch and what they are doing to put matches in the short term and resolve the issue in long term, but finances should be confidential.

I am by no means defending the board. Todays update is long overdue and after the horse has bolted, but gives the fans what they need to know.

It’s the part about the centre circle which prevents that. To dig it all up and immediately play on it probably wouldn’t be possible.

That begs the question then: why raise the issue of how work on the pitch will be funded?

My post was in reply to your question; "Who do you think will be covering the cost...?"

You're now suggesting the club shouldn't provide that info, so why even ask?

I wonder if it is worth cutting our losses and stop going for redress for the 2020 refurbishment. How much has it cost in fees so far. Also I thought the firm responsible is either no longer trading or under new ownership/management, perhaps I've imagined that detail.

Yes, just thought there could be a way of draining the centre circle area from above to get the game played then dig it up. The decision has been made now.

Personally I think it is an excellent update from the Club and enough information to take in for the majority of supporters.
It does feel that the Club want to tell the fans more but can't for whatever reason i.e. Legal
I do have faith that under the guidance of the new owners the matter will ultimately be resolved. Perhaps at that time the full story will be revealed.

I was referring to the post asking the question ”isn’t the benefit of having wealthy owners so we can spend money on pitch repairs”

My point was that was exactly what they were probably doing. I wasn’t asking , it was a flippant comment in jest. Granted I didn’t reply to the post to make it easier for you to connect the two.

It was you who then suggested the club should be open saying where the funds are coming from. So it’s perfectly valid to hold the view that sort of thing should be confidential.

Hope that clears your confusion 😃

Irrespective of where the money is coming from, I’m struggling to understand whether there should be any debate that it has to be spent.

The club statement notes that last summer an external consultant advised “that the drainage failure was occurring below the root zone and that, ultimately, only a full reconstruction would guarantee a permanent resolution.”

To clarify “only a full reconstruction”

Now of course, other consultants may advise on other options, but the time has come to properly sort the situation out. It’s been proven that trying other routes and hoping is a false economy.

My question referred to "how" the pitch refurb will be funded, not by whom

The answer to that is perfectly obvious, so why raise it?

When the Ogdens took over, c.9 million ordinary £1 shares were issued, an amount which was presumably carefully calibrated to provide stability and an initial small boost to team-building alongside other projects

What would be of legitimate interest is whether there's sufficient leeway within that initial stabilising funding of the club to cover the refurb or whether the Ogdens may be obliged to add to that amount

The answer would come in due course, when the next financial accounts are published to shareholders (or further shares are issued). In the meantime, it'd help explain any reticence in funding the team or other initiatives, which is why transparency is often the better option

Hope that clears the January fog for you
