Project 5000 06:45 - Jan 7 with 3378 viewsDale_4_Life

Looks like it can be done.

Interesting article in the Sunday Times last weekend with Andy Woodman at Bromley.

One paragraph stood out and encouragement for RAFC.

"The capacity at the ground is 5000 and we sell out every home game. When i came to the football club the average gate was 900 and we had 200 season ticket holders. Now we have sell outs and 2500 season ticket holders. The owner and chairman Robin Stanton-Gleaves is building the club very intelligently.

Not with the current shambles it can’t.

I don't know which numbers Andy Woodman is looking at. He's been there since 2021 and yes - that part ois true - in 2021 the average home gate was 900 - but it was Covid -affected reported figures. The season before's average gate was 0ver 2000 and the season after (AW's first full season) it was down at 1900. Today it's around 3500.

https://www.footballwebpages.co.uk/bromley/attendances

I can believe that they have 2000-2500 season card holders - and I can also believe that if they make 3000 tickets available to home fans then they can sell them all (on Saturdays). This is not selling out 5000 every week though.

Do I think that it can be done? Of course.

My OP was taken word for word from the Sunday times last weekend.

Whilst there could be journalistic license at play there is no doubt the crowds at Bromley are have been on an upward trend.

Closer to home Stockport have seen significant crowd increases in the last 10 years.

The obvious difference (compared to Dale) is both Bromley and Stockport have had a winning product on the pitch something the football club must not lose sight of. When I say winning I mean promotions not the occasional home win.

Would there be regular good numbers of away supporters in L2 to boost attendances?

I remember a good few years back, we played Chesterfield on a Tuesday night. I think we were first and second, the gate was 5000. A small shred of evidence to help prove that crowds will increase if the product is good and we are winning games.

You can drop the price and do all kinds of initiatives, but the best way to improve those gates is by flying high in the table.

The way I see it is I’d rather 2000 proper Dale fans who go regardless of wins then an added 3000 on the gate who support united and city and are coming because we are an easy option and are doing well

'closet biffo' not sure if that's realistic.

I was also there, but both both are mutually compatible. The product was good!

Understandable maybe as the fans were hoping to push the players on to stave off relegation.

In the season we finished in our highest league position in league one, the attendance was up 14% from the previous season.

The average number of home fans wasn't though.

2494 in 2013/14
2317 in 2022/23

The average number of away fans in 2022/23 (711) was much higher than in 2013/14 (401).

Perhaps 3000 will be an intended milestone on the way. Unfortunately I can't make it, but it will be good if questions are asked about, project 5000 at the fans forum.

I agree James it would.

A fans focus group should be a priority. They would come up with 25 easy wins that could be considered (some could probably be actioned with immediate effect).

There needs to be the will. There needs to be a person in charge that drives it forward.

Agreed getting back to 3000 and our highest average attendance in recent times.

If the club seriously want to achieve success in such a project, they should commit to ensuring those currently at Spotland day to day have little or no involvement.

Start afresh.
