Is there anything positive about SFC at the moment? 11:49 - Jan 2 with 1885 viewsA1079

As I was driving into work this morning, on the radio there was something about footballing sculptures and what is the best and worst...........surprise, surprise there was a resounding view that the initial sculpture of Ted Bates was considered the worst (though it has since been replaced).

The other day Danny Murphy (can't stand the guy and he hates us) was saying that Saints are the worse side since Derby to grace the PL.

We cannot get a win for love nor money.

We are languishing and firmly routed at the bottom.

We have the 2 x 9-0 record defeats

and it goes on and on. No one could ever accuse us Saints fans of picking an easy team to support and watch. I know we have had some good times in the past and I have been lucky enough to witness some of them, but I cannot recall a time where the brand and name of SFC seems as low as it is now........I am not even sure it was as low as this during the administration years??????

The other teams that did this badly or slightly better are not in the Premier League now.

Derby 2007/08 11 points

Sunderland 2005/06 15 points

Huddersfield 2018/19 16 points

Sheffield United 2023/24 16 points

Derby, Sheffield United and Sunderland are in the Championship. Huddersfield are in League One

I guess that is a positive for those on here who say they don't like the Premier League.

PS
You could add to your list of negatives that for a club of our size (20th on the all-time attendance table), we are, in terms of trophies won, the most underachieving team in the country. Most clubs of our size have won 4 or 5 major trophies and a couple of Championship trophies as well.

The positive of this is that it also makes us the most loyal fans in the country. We keep turning up.

Simply answer is 'no'.

The current season has been a joke. 1 win. Very few goals. And being forced to watch 15 games of a suicidal brand of football.

And long term there is little to cheer about. I really enjoyed the first 45 minutes against West Ham. Thought we at least showed some fight - saw plenty of attacking to get me off my seat. But 135 minutes later and I am feeling pretty flat again.

We have a Board that either has no interest in SFC (too many other clubs in the republic getting their attention) or it has absolutely no idea. They were given a get out of jail free card with the playoff win but they have blown that in the space of 6 months.

The season we were last relegated there were three promoted teams in the PL. Fulham, Bournemouth and Forest. Not only did they all manage to survive above us that season, but they now sit 3rd , 7th and 8th in the PL.

This season did not have to be like this.

The future is bleak.

I'd take that as a positive. The Premier League is more competitive now than it's ever been. So, we can compete in it just as well as those 3 clubs are doing, when we get back into it. In terms of size of fanbase, we are very similar in size to Forest (we are 20th in the all-time attendance table and they are just below us, 22nd) and much bigger than Bournemouth and Fulham.

Whilst I have been pretty critical of our home support this season, I think I am right in saying we have sold out every away game in the League this season.

Given the tripe served up on the pitch, I think that is pretty impressive, certainly better than nearly half the teams in the Prem.

I think that this bodes well for next season. If people are still prepared to watch us when we face batterings, our away support should be very good next season.

I like your optimism Dirk. But I don't take too much from the fact that others seem able to do what we can't.

Certainly, SFC could and should be in the same position are Forest, Fulham, Brighton, Bournemouth but since Gao took over it has felt like we were travelling in the opposite direction.

It doesn't have to be like this. But we didn't have to appoint Nathan Jones, we didn't have to give RM at least 7 games more than he deserved and the Jury is still out on whether Juric can do any better.

We’ve got safe-standing, the fanzone and our own boozer.

Our light-shows are the envy of the league.

I can’t stand Danny Murphy either. Full of his own importance.

I don’t think we are ever going to get anywhere near agreeing on this.

It was sporadically good last season, but then so it should given how the team were doing.

This season however, nowhere near good enough. As with the team.

I don't know about anyone else - but I just can't get any enthusiasm or future hope for the club, all the while we have Sport Republic as owners.

It feels like we're just drifting along, going from one bad decision after another, whether that be choice of manager or squad additions not being good enough. It feels like the board are hopelessly out of their depth & no one is able to make the right decision in the boardroom.

We're a toy, a Guinea pig, an experiment.

Our season really has been one long ritual humiliation!

I wholly disapprove of what you say and will defend to the death your right to say it.

Whilst in terms of winning anything we have consistently underachieved, fans of other clubs have thought the same: Leeds until the 1960s when Revie arrived, Forest until the 1970s when Clough arrived, Leicester until the last 10 years when they won their first league title and first FA Cup.

There aren't many clubs of our size left that still haven't had their spell at the top. The only others to underachieve almost as much as us are Birmingham with just 2 League Cups and 2 2nd tier Championships and Middlesbrough, with just 1 League Cup and 4 2nd tier Championships. Right now, I'd take our 1st 2nd tier Championship. We're certainly due one. We've kept turning up and supporting our team in greater numbers than fans of other clubs that have had far more success.

Just look at the smaller clubs below us in the all-time attendance table, who've been League Champions and won multiple trophies: Preston, Ipswich, Forest, Blackburn, Burnley, Huddersfield, Portsmouth etc.

Until we have an award winning radio station and pies, and The Five Pledges(tm) we can’t ever really compete.

The gulags and sh*t scaffold just aren’t the same as being able to proudly boast about how we lead the sport in pledges

This could be said as true.
Starting with our Rollbit shirt.
Losing games by trying and failing to play out from the back.
Pink Shirts.
Teams not even getting out of first gear to beat us.

Our fans deserve so much more, the potential for the club is enormous but we don't realize it for so many reasons.

The rollercoaster rides on but there will be no other club for me.
The Past great players and great games still in my memory bank.

I first knew this club was unique when Rupert Lowe brought in a rugby coach, Clive Woodward, to train the players.

The only positive I can think of at the moment is that we are undefeated so far in 2025, might as well enjoy that while we can…

You know how some (generally successful) clubs have images of their trophy wins built into the top of their stands?

We could have the pledges on our stands.

They would be our absolute raison d'etre.

If we had ever issued them....

If we had the pledges on our stands would it help us polish off the opposition? 😀

I really like our new manager. He looks miserable as f*ck. There isn’t much to smile about; is this the worst season in Saints history?

Relegation from championship to League One was still with 45 points.
Relegation from the top division was never this bad.

The PL is not more competitive than ever.
The same teams are at the top with the most money. No one else wins anything.
Below that there's a few jockeying for Europe then the rest are teams doing nothing but trying to stay up.
They all might go down. We are in that purgatory. Could go down (definitely this season), could come back up, then could get relegated. Such is modern football and it's crap.
