Beware of The Heed 10:42 - Jun 27 with 10683 viewsmagpie2k4

Hello Rochdale fans,
Notts fan in peace here.

My prediction of who to watch out for this season is Gateshead. They have a fantastic manager and play great, passing football. Their form at the end of last season was top 5 and I predict they will finish top 7 and get in the playoffs.

I hope you play these later in the season when you’ve settled, because I think if you play them early you could be in for a shock.

So that's two teams that you've mentioned that play passing football are there any others or are Notts and The Heed the exception to a league of giants playing route one hoofball?

Alty like to play a bit, but not sure how they will be this season.
Chesterfield like to think they play pass and move .. but we will have to wait and see.

Hoof ball specialists are Bromley .. ooh wait till you play Bromley

I wouldn’t base too much on last season tbh , lots of changes in squads. Oldham have quietly assembled some very useful players after years of decline. They look a good bet for promotion with the signings they have made , getting some of rivals better players.

We know it will be a challenge and have to be mindful (Look at Scunthorpe).

Hoping for a decent start - hold our own mid table around January and push on hopefully close to the play offs season end.

Or we could finish in trouble - bottom 6. Who really knows.

What we need to avoid is the usual mid season slump. It starts in late October or November and lasts anything up to 20 games into February, March. It has been evident to a greater or lesser extent over the last 10 seasons. It seems that Rochdale teams struggle with the shorter days and longer nights when so many games are played under floodlights. I dont know what causes it, I suspect it has to do with heavier pitches in training and games and seems to improve with lighter nights and better weather. Maybe many of our players simply are not attuned to Rochdale weather, get a bit depressed and eat a different diet.. its worth the fitness coaches time to try and figure it out.

I think the phenomenon has been going on for a lot longer than ten years.
My grandad always to remark that Dale stopped playing well when the clocks changed.

I'm sure for every season where it has happened, we could come up with another one where it hasn't.

We could also come up with seasons where our form and results have been worse before and after the winter/floodlight months than during them.

I only have figures for the last 13 seasons but it has probably been going on for much longer!
The mid -season slump over the last 13 seasons
Total games involved 140
Won 19
Draw 40
Lost 81
Possible points 420
Actual Points 97
Points per game 0.7
Avg PPG over 13 seasons 1.34 (by extrapolation, = 61.6 points per season)
Avg PPG excluding the slump 1.5 (by extrapolation, = 69 points per season)
Average points cost = 7.4 per season, enough to have kept us in L1 under BBM and enough to have kept us up last season, although to be fair , the slump effect was hardly noticeable last season as it was so poor anyway.

The longest slump was in 2012/13 when we played 17 games between the end of November and the end of February , W3 D3 L11 ... 12pts from a possible 51! Well done John Coleman!
The worst slump from a points perspective was in 2020/21 under BBM from late October to the end of December - played 9 won1 Drew 0 lost 8...

There were 15 games from the end of November 2012 to the end of February 2013 and Keith Hill managed six of them. There's no doubt he was a better manager for Dale than Coleman, but it needs mentioning.

Aggregating all the figures makes no sense, as every season is different. In the 13 seasons you've quoted, we've been relegated three times and gone close in others, so the figures are bound to be low!

What about an analysis from 2007/08 to 2016/17, when we were reaching play-offs and being promoted twice? We even managed to sneak in ten consecutive home wins through the autumn of 2016...

Someone with more inclination than myself could look at them all, but we won eleven games after the clocks went back in October 2016.
In the 13/14 promotion there were twelve wins between November and the end of February.

Also, we can’t just count league games in this scenario, it’s either affecting performance or it isn’t.

Though on the league stats under BBM in 20/21 from the 27th Oct until the end of December: won 2, drew 3, lost 5. The two wins were the high scoring victories at Plymouth and Wigan. The worst example of a slump since Robshaker’s time.

Ok, so I did it anyway. Looking at the period from the start of November to the end of February in all games played from 2010/11 onwards, the W,D,L for each of the thirteen seasons are:

10/11 6,8,3
11/12 3,7,9
12/13 5,5,11
13/14 12,4,7
14/15 8,5,10
15/16 8,3,9
16/17 11,3,7
17/18 6,6,11
18/19 6,4,13
19/20 7,5,12
20/21 3,7,13
21/22 4,10,6
22/23 2,4,13

P276, W81, D71, L124
Points equivalent: 314
Average 1.14 points equivalent a game.

Of course, it’s possible to eliminate cup games or add/remove games in the period classed as mid-season. However, that’s a fair indication that Dale’s results as team, although far from brilliant, aren’t so obviously terrible for the middle three months of a season.

And as TVOS said, going back slightly further, the three previous seasons to this were as follows:

07/08 11,2,7
08/09 11,7,6
09/10 11,4,4

33 wins in 63 games and the equivalent of 112 points!

*all stats from counting up on Soccerbase so apologies for the odd error if there are any.

When we drew at home V Ipswich in April 2021, under the "hugely talented" (quote: David Bottomley) BBM, we completed a run of 17 consecutive home league games without a win - the worst such run in the club's existence. That season, until the victory V Swindon, we'd had one win out of 23 home games in all competitions.

Roger gave BBM and himself a pay increase for those results. BBM also got a contract extension thanks to Roger when sacking was the obvious move. And he didn't tell anybody about the contract extension for pathetic reasons, until the fans forum of crocodile tears. Never forget.

There are no words for my contempt.

Would BBM have survived if fans had been allowed in the ground during that awful run?
You thought it was toxic at times last year, it could have been a lot worse then.

Back to ‘stage of season’ form, it’s the start and the summer month of August that looks a bigger problem.

August results from 2010/11 to present:
P84, W19, D26, L39
Points equivalent: 83
Average 0.99 points equivalent per game.

Maybe the players don’t like too much natural light or the sight of Knowl Hill when the grass isn’t as green.

How would you describe your first season in non league?
Was I right about anything?

You were right about the Heed for a start, best side I've seen us play all season.

The standard of the league has surprised me, it's a lot worse than I was expecting and the officiating has been Sunday League level at times but I've not disliked this season from an experience point of view, seen new grounds, gone back to old grounds we missed going to (Halifax, Kidderminster etc)

Feel we've thrown away points this year with poor tactics and a weak mentality which is why we're mid-table but hopefully we can push on next season.

If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor

I think you’ve got more chance than Oldham next season. They throw money at everything and it’s got them no where. You have a style of play and structure that I predict will go better next season.
The national league has some benefits, the playoff system is much better I think than EFL.
How has Brooks done in goal?
Wondering whether he could step up to league 2?

I don't think many are sold on Brooks to be honest, Jacob Chapman has been brought in on loan from Huddersfield because Brooks was away with Ireland U21's but I don't see Brooks getting his spot back. I don't see him making the step up personally.
