What's the best piece of advice someone has ever given you?

I was in Morrisons some years ago and a Scotsman lurched up and intoned.
"Keep it in yer troosers."

You know what,I haven't looked back since.

I have held onto a couple of pearls of wisdom thrown my way:

1) Honesty isn't the best policy, it's the only policy.

2) Nobody ever went bust taking a profit.

I know repeat it ad infinitum to younger staff but "The only stupid question is the one you don't ask"

One Sunday morning about 65 Years ago when I was about 7 Years old, I walked into our tiny kitchen just as my old Dad was polishing his shoes, the silly sod looked up at me and said "before you go out on a Sunday allway's make sure you polish your shoes and brylcreem your hair"
That's all he said.

Daft sod.

Still trying to work It out.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

First boss circa 1980. Beg, borrow, steal, stop eating, whatever it takes, buy your own place now.

My dad always said about the traffic in London 'it is better to be late than the late'.

When I made a big mistake in my first job my boss said to me 'The man that never did anything never made any mistakes'

The words have remained with me every time I have f*cked up since.

From my late Dad, "only borrow what you can afford to pay back". Great advice that has kept me financially secure.

The man with the full cup walks slowly.

I rushed this earlier. It's a hard one to explain. An elderly friend gave me this nugget years ago as I was, and still am inside, extremely impetuous. Dangerously so. The phrase taught me not to rush into decisions. Your cup is full. Keep it that way.

It really helped me avoid arguments, fights and stupid decisions.
Most of them, anyway!

"If this job was easy then someone with less talent than you would be doing it". This was a quote from a desk top calendar I had years ago. I tore out the quote and pinned it on my desk.
I might still have it in a box of old stuff somewhere. Always kept me sane when things went tits up.

Similarly, from my late Uncle, "Only lend what you can afford to give away".

Not sure if it's the best advise but I took it on board anyway. " The reward for hardwork is more work".

And another one " a man that's never made a mistake has never made anything".

I'm always dispassionate about big broad wooly worldly advice like 'aim for the stars if you miss you'll hit the moon' or 'never give up chasing your dreams' and other aspirational stuff as it's not grounded in an y sort of reality, not measurable, and if you're struggling for motivation or inspiration or needing a boost it offers almost no real salve.

I prefer my advice to be simple, practical and immediately implementable.

The reason why software projects fail is because people always ask if something is possible (the answer is always 'yes') instead of asking if it is a good idea.
