About as easy a 1-0 as you could expect. Walsall were clearly on the beach already. We played some nice football at times but we do need to learn when to shoot rather than try for that extra pass.

We’re safe now, let’s concentrate on next season. Anyone who’s not in Robbie’s plans for next season should be benched. Peter Thomas should get some game time. It’s one thing planning for a season in summer, but it’s not the same as playing competitive games. When we won promotion in 2010 Hill began to tinker with the formation when promotion was all but sealed. It cost us the title but it led to a successful campaign in League One.

Three home games, 7 points from 9, three clean sheets, much more determination to get stuck in and graft. Well done Dale!

Glad to get 3 points in the bag now....our last 5 games could potentially be a bit tricky.
Teams with something to play for.....

Still confident we can scrap and make a fist of it.......as said on here every week, any team in L2 can beat each other.

I don't think Hartlepool have got anything to play for.

Game still in progress. Spennymoor winning 1-0.

Feels quite heady to be as high as 16th!

Can understand why Walsall's support were annoyed at their team, but take nothing away from our performance which should've seen us win much more comfortably. Would like to see the handball early doors where the ref awarded a free kick, my impression (and most of those around me) was it was in the box

Nothing outstanding about the game except the goal

Our home form has actually become quietly impressive this season. Only three teams have lost less home games, and our home ‘goals against’ is top 8 standard.

Looked clearly outside the box from where I was in the main stand. Would like to see the one in the second half lots of shouts from the Pearl Street.

Walsall on that showing were the worst team I've seen this season at our place. Possibly already in holiday, I'd be upset if I'd travelled as well. Was it me or were they time wasting at one nil down?

Thought we played well in the main but were given lots of time in the ball. Grant was brilliant in the second half I was really surprised to see him taken on. Newby however really didn't take his chance came on and looked like he was determined to sabotage our win losing the ball in places that led to them having counter attacks.

The problem has been too many draws. We haven't been great in both boxes all season. Today should have been a comfortable three goal victory with better finishing. Defensively we looked solid and there was some good football today. Grant has made a good impact recently. There is a lot of quality but he needs to influence games more consistently. Hopefully he will be a key player next season. Another shout out to Dorsett who had another good game.

It was a definite handball in the second half. Either the ref didn't see it or he believed it was accidental.

TBH I am lost on the handball rules, they seem to change all the time

Newby has gone backwards these last few months, faster than an Italian tank. After today's lame effort, I wouldn't bother with him again. Offers nothing, ducks challenges, too weak in the tackle and lacks effort.

Good result in the end against a really, really poor Walsall team.

There were glimpses today of the style of play we saw in games 2-10 of the season. Add Ball instead of Dooley and Campbell instead of Cashman and I think we start to see what Stockdale is aiming to do.

We're still frustrating at times in both boxes, but it feels like we've seen a gear change in attitude, application and the basics. One more win and I'll feel totally comfortable that we are safe - hopefully whatever has worked for RS in the last couple of weeks shapes his thinking and approach into next season. He'll move from being a total newbie to 'relatively inexperienced' and everything he has been through this season will hopefully help us to be more clinical next year.

A note for the referee - awful. His first EFL game, and if there was an assessor there it may be a while before his next. The penalty shout for handball at the start of the second half is as clear cut a handball as you will ever see. He seemed more bothered about diligently applying the magic spray, and being seen to be in the right position, than he was about making the right decisions and contributing to a proper game of football.

Also - WTF went on with their player and fans near the end? It felt reminiscent of Michael Simpkins in the WMG years ago, and after that their players just downed tools and were happy for full time to come. All very strange.

Credit where its due to this team and the manager. A few weeks ago we didn't seem capable of a performance not only like today's but also the last 2 home matches. From somewhere a bit of grit has been found. Get stuck in at this level and the results follow. It's a shame it didn't happen earlier in the season.

A special mention also for whoever brought the Sandy Lane songbook along today. Not heard us be so vocal for a very long time. Long may it continue.

His arm was not in a 'natural position' and it struck his arm so I'm not sure why it wasn't given.

Decent performance in patches. The defensive unit is looking solid, helped by an increasingly more confident Lynch and another good performance by Dorsett who now looks as assured as O Connell and Downing, and actually played the best pass of the first half to put Charman through - he's getting better with his distribution. Charman's first goal will come soon, his all round play is decent and it was a quality pass for the goal to Grant who's our best player and needs to be in the team every week. All in all an encouraging day, albeit against a poor team.

A few months ago I was saying I was looking forward to next season as it'll most likely be a brand new back 5. I'm now thinking they've finally clicked and more on the side of being worried about the changes we'll have to make at the back. It's being clinical up top that's the issue at the moment.

That's the problem with VAR now being used further up the leagues - that handball is 100% given as a penalty with VAR. It still should have been given today in the 2nd half. The Walsall player jumped to block it with his arms stretched out. Baffling.

Agree about the ref. but |I don't agree about Ball for Dooley. They're different types of players - I know Dooley gets stick on here but he knits the play together well and rarely loses the ball or misplaces a pass. One of the successes of the past month has been a more settled team selection with Kelly & Dooley in midfield but (crucially) the front 3 doing a much better job of pressing opponents so those two don't get overrun . Ball does add steel and a greater goal threat from the midfield but he doesn't have the quick feet needed to knit play - I think both his & Campbell's injuries may have forced changes from Stockdale which have turned out to be fortuitous.

Feeling chipper tonight. I was one of those who wasn’t loosing their lunch about our league a few games ago, so feel vindicated about that. Also please we now sit above Simpson’s Carlisle, so want to finish above his lot.
Agree it is now time to field more non loan players, especially those who are playing for their contract. Although I still can’t see Aidy White getting a game. He must be delighted he’s on a two year deal. We might as well play loanees at the back, because I can’t see Jim playing much next season, and Taylor is injured.
Delighted Grant has started to settle following a run of games and he has shown he is capable of a press.
Happy Days

The last few home games, since Carlisle at home at least have been a revelation. The side has become a a proper team rather than a bunch of strangers, they now battle for each other and generally seem to have an intent to play for each other. The pity is it took over 30 games to figure it out.The really problematic bit is that there are only 12 of the squad signed on for next season. The BOD says there will be more money available for next season, it would be great ( and I didnt think I would be saying this not so long ago), if todays defence could start next season. Midfield is still a bit lightweight and we need another couple of forwards and a target-man.

Stockdale has blown a raspberry at his critics and will have learned a lot about managing in this division, particularly that you have to go toe to toe in terms of physicality to earn the right to play football. The next step is to finish the season well,( if only for the sake of season ticket sales) recruit well and hit the grass running next season.

A few random thoughts:
Lynch looks far more self assured. I wonder if this is because he’s no longer looking over his shoulder at Coleman knowing that one error and he’s back on the bench. The situation can’t have been ideal for either of them.
Whether or not this breeds confidence in the men in front of him I don’t know.
The back three who played today were so solid but having said that Walsall didn’t exactly exert themselves. The acid test comes at somewhere like Leyton Orient on a Tuesday night in November.
I wish we could sign Downing permanently. He knows exactly what to do at exactly the right time.
EOC looks far more happier with a proven performer to his right rather than a novice and the two were constantly communicating and also encouraging Dorsett.
This system does work when the wing backs are playing as that and not as part of a back five.
COK is now back to the player we saw in the first part of the season. I suppose that perhaps we expected too much of him when he came back. After all, he’d spent five weeks idling his time away at Mansfield and took a while to get back up to speed.
Was it a penalty when he was upended in the first half? I thought it was but a chap near me thought his reputation of going down easily may have preceded him.?
Which brings us the the rookie ref. And I use the word rookie advisedly.
After the O’Keeffe incident this player handled on the edge of the box and he gave a free kick. But isn’t deliberate handball an automatic booking?
I’m positively looking forward to Charman, Campbell and AN Other linking up together upfront next season.
There will be changes obviously in personnel but perhaps the links are being forged in the chain.
As for their fans turning on a couple of players I was dumbfounded. I haven’t really seen anything as vocally vicious before in 60 years of spectating.
There had been a hint earlier with the ironic cheering and chanting when they had a shot but if there had been the usual managerial bounce when they changed bosses a few weeks ago it’s definitely evaporated.
Someone near me in the Sandy described the first half as “raw entertainment” but I certainly enjoyed it.
RS has certainly turned it around after a torrid time a few weeks ago.
Before Christmas plenty were screaming for the defence to be sorted out. He certainly seems to have done that.

"After the O’Keeffe incident this player handled on the edge of the box and he gave a free kick. But isn’t deliberate handball an automatic booking?"

But it wasn't 'deliberate handball'; it was just 'handball', as explained in the Laws of the Game thus:

"It is an offence if a player touches the ball with their hand/arm when it has made their body unnaturally bigger. A player is considered to have made their body unnaturally bigger when the position of their hand/arm is not a consequence of, or justifiable by, the player’s body movement for that specific situation. By having their hand/arm in such a position, the player takes a risk of their hand/arm being hit by the ball and being penalised."

That's what happened with the first half incident. Whether it was in or out of the penalty area is a different argument.

If you don't know why your posts keep getting downvoted, there's no hope for you.

I had a bit of a wobble over our “millionaire” manager a couple of months ago or so but I’m so glad he has managed to find us a bit of form. It’s a world away from some of the stuff we’ve had to put up with before the ‘mini-run’ and he deserves great credit for it. Well done Robbie.

Shame some people seem to have lost their login details and offer up some praise too but I guess that’s not in their negative nature.

Still a lot of work to do, but its turning out that those saying its worth sticking with him weren't wrong, despite being told when having a few doubts that we should've been listening to those saying he wasn't up to it for most of the season
