Les Barlow RIP on 14:27 - Jan 22 with 3399 views | Hopwoodblue | Very sad. We had some great nights in the Merry Weaver after away games, When the likes of O’Loughlin Taylor and a few others would join us. As we both lived in Heywood he used to let me share his taxi . Paid for by the Ob I’m sure ! Great memories. RIP Les Barlow a great Dale off the pitch legend.

Les Barlow RIP on 14:36 - Jan 22 with 3359 views | SuddenLad | Dreadful news. Les was a terrific journalist for all things Dale, in every sport you can mention. I have had the great pleasure of his company at many, many games all over the country. A group of us even sponsored games under the banner of the 'Les Barlow Appreciation Society'. He ran the bar under the old stand for a good while and even made it his home 😊 Many a post match press headline has been composed in there after a few scoops. Les was a legend at Dale and he will be much missed. A journalist who represented a different era, but a great bloke who did much for this club. R. I. P . Les. [Post edited 22 Jan 2022 14:37]

Les Barlow RIP on 17:23 - Jan 22 with 3084 views | jonahwhereru | BEing an exile back in the days of Les I used to subscribe to the Observer to get the only real reporting on Dale. He was just a no nonsense tell it how it is reporter. Thanks Les, rest well.
Les Barlow RIP on 18:09 - Jan 22 with 2973 views | TVOS1907 | What sad news. Les helped me an awful lot in my early years writing for and editing TVOS and was always accommodating when I wanted access to the Ob's archives. A proper old school journalist who clearly cared about Dale and his responsibility to the fans and readers, which unfortunately isn't the case anymore.
| When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf? |

Les Barlow RIP on 21:34 - Jan 22 with 2744 views | EllDale | Desperately sad to hear the news. It is a reminder of when the town’s local newspaper reported on both of it’s professional sporting clubs with clarity and honesty and in depth. I couldn’t believe that the Observer, when the Colchester game was postponed the other week, chose to fill the page reserved for the match report with an in-depth interview with BBM gushing about the City under 23s. Times change, now we’re in the days of cutting and pasting stuff from the official website. Les was a Dale stalwart and a man of trenchant views on many occasions. Used to enjoy a pint with him in the Citizen round the corner from the Observer on occasions and he was a massive help to me when I spent a couple of seasons covering the CLL in the 1980s. Will be missed, rest easy mate.

"He ran the bar under the old stand for a good while and even made it his home" I've just read his account of that time in "100 years of Dale" ("Rochdale Observer" supplement, 8 August 2007). It begins: "There are those who live for Dale. I was a tad different - I lived AT Dale for the best part of two years." And goes on to tell some amusing, as well as grimmer, tales of Spotland in the mid-1980s. Condolences to his family and friends.
