Really sad news. Ernie was only a Dale player for about a dozen games, but he was a great favourite even in that short time.

I remember him grabbing the captains armband in what would be his last ever Football League appearance in the away game at Newport, which saw them lose league status.

I think Ernie had suffered from a very rare form of dementia and the last years of his life must have been a dreadful experience for him and his nearest & dearest.

A Spireites legend, their greatest player I should think.

Rest in Peace Ernie. You were a great asset to the game and a great player.

That's sad, a proper lower league 70s/80s forward.

I follow his daughter on Twitter and she was always updating everyone as to how he was and reporting on stories from his career and former team-mates.

As SuddenLad says, he wasn't with Dale long, but I recall him playing a major part in a famous 3-0 win at Swansea on Easter Saturday, which was a remarkable result given The Swans were promoted a month later.

RIP Ernie

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

I'll never forget his diving header away at Swansea when we beat them 3:0.

A great footballer for us and especially Chesterfield, where he is rightly a legend and never forgotten.
Condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time.

Ernie was a real cult hero during that short stint at Spotland. You could tell he simply loved playing the game.

RIP.

I remember playing Chesterfield at Spotland when Keith Welch made a great save at the feet of Ernie Moss, taking the ball of his foot. Ernie responded by clapping Keith for his save. A great act of sportmanship from Ernie. RIP Ernie
