Root and JB looked pretty comfortable for the most part hopefully both get 3 figures and we will be well ahead of the game. Bat once and thank you very much

im not an england cricket fan, (and not saying youre doing this) but ive noticed you guys always go absolutely nuts when a player tries a shot and gets out... the only acceptable dismissals seem to be nicking behind, bowled or lbw'ed.... everything else is a bad shot let the lad play his game.... you cant be a sitting duck and try to block everything... sometimes its ok to put pressure back on the bowler... clearly didnt get the shot right but dont think you should discourage a player from expressing himself when the opponents only put up 130 separately, ill never understand england selectors' aversion to bairstow.... aside from stokes and root, he seems to be englands most accomplished batsman with multiple centuries, some abroad and some against the likes of australia.... hes also a better keeper than buttler by a wide margin.... dont get how you dropped him while mediocre batsman like burns and denly were playing ahead of him.. id actually take him ahead of buttler [Post edited 14 Jan 2021 13:33]

Trying a shot isnt the issue; it's the context of the situation. Look at Perrera (Sp? The lefty opening) had just lost two partners. First session, First day, 25-2. You then proceed to wildly reverse sweep a young, inexperienced opposition spinner who - lets be honest - hasnt got much in the bank re variation, bounce or turn when you could have milked your way to 50 like Root and Bairstow did. Naive and poorly executed; as was SL's entire innings. Crawley's wasnt as bad - but only because of the incoming batsmen's performances. Learning curve and all that [Post edited 14 Jan 2021 13:52]

i wont defend the sri lankan batting... that was moronic, reverse sweeping with a slip in place at 25-2 with a mediocre batting lineup to follow is particularly moronic

Exactly. Even a positive batsman like Stokes is clever enough to mostly play himself in when he comes into a difficult situation. At times other English batsmen have come in when we're up against it with three or four quick wickets gone down and played like it's a 20-20. A particular favourite is the one that's high and wide outside off stump that they could perfectly safely leave alone. In fairness we seemed to have learned this a bit and don't tend to be quite so reckless. Even Buttler is playing the situation more now and he's better for it in test cricket.

I thought Chandimal's was even worse driving to cover 3 balls after Matthews got out having got away with the same stroke just before lunch and he's Captain this is the worst Sri Lankan side since their first days as a Test team

Agreed. Silverwood and root deserve credit for a) beginning to instill a proper mentality for test match batting and b) finally picking players for the format - J Roy ain’t a test batter in any conceivable universe Suppose there’s a wider discussion at play here about the diverging skills of one day/20-20 and test cricket - too much for one thread though! When it comes to selection I would imagine Bairstow will always have more chance away from home as generally 3 selectors of which 1 is Root as captain so only needs one of the others to vote for him and he's in
Creeket is back on 19:38 - Jan 14 with 6659 views | danehoop | I enjoyed the honesty from Bess who basically said he bowled really badly and was both surprised and a little embarrassed to have taken 5 wickets. It was like watching lemmings fall off a cliff today.

sri lanka may be sh*te, but winning test matches away from home is never easy, so good on england for this dominating performance
Creeket is back on 15:02 - Jan 15 with 6430 views | BlackAndGoldRanger | Cricket is a very contextual game and sometimes England, as most teams, don't play the situation well. Crawley didn't but Root, Bairstow and Lawrence were all superb. Calm, composed and intelligent play. Shame about the weather, love watching Root bat when he's in his groove. The top order runs also give license for Butler, Curran etc. to play some shots down the order against a tiring Sri Lanka attack.
