Millers Match Thread on 23:52 - Nov 24 by VancouverHoop | I thought some of the youngsters ran out of legs. Niko was MOTM level for the first hour, but just lost it after that. Same with Masterson, and Kakay had his poorest game since he became a regular. We're expecting a lot from players who've only been shaving for a few years. |
None of it really bodes well for Friday, other than the result which takes some pressure off.

I thought Masterson had a pretty good game overall, dealt with an absolute ariel bombardment second half, considering his relative inexperience he stood upto the onslaught quite well. The problems in the last 25 mins was that we stopped passing the ball and went direct so continually gave them the ball back and another long punt followed so we were under pressure for a long time, it's almost impossible not to make mistakes in those circumstances. I thought Warburton dropped a bit of a bollock not making more changes during that period just to break the game up a bit. Kane on for Kakay who was clearly struggling seemed an obvious move as well. For them I thought the number 10 who came on was a real handful

I think Clive's preview suggested Ladapo usually starts for them, but he had a knock. I might be wrong though. Re keeping possession, I think when Dieng had the ball he would look for the short option to give us a better chance of keeping the ball. But Rotherham were pushing their players up so there was probably the feeling that it was better if we lost possession higher up the pitch than close to our goal. Except unfortunately we tended to lose the second ball, and then even if we did get it we'd pump it forward only for Bonne to get caught offside again.

I think your analysis on the previous page is spot on but I honestly don't think the last half hour is that relevant for Brentford beyond our struggle to play well in a full '90 (which has been an issue most of the season) We haven't played a side remotely like Rotherham this season - would say only Wycombe are comparable in terms of directness of play in the division. If we are leading against Brentford - they're not just going to bring on a big striker and use every single freekick to launch long. Think the younger players struggled a lot with the constant channel balls - Kakay especially - hopefully having Dickie back will help, but the challenge on Friday will be very different imo. Millers Match Thread on 23:33 - Nov 24 by Northernr | I actually thought all the subs made sense at the time they were made. They've obviously been told Willock could only do an hour. He's going off who do you put on? Adomah maybe an obvious answer but is Adomah going to charge around and close down and high press? Maybe not. So you put Bonne on to do that. Also push forward for the killer fourth goal with two up front. It's not a terrible idea if Willock really can't go on any longer, but Bonne played the role really poorly. Constantly looking to run in behind a high line, and frequently going offide as a result, when the deep players needed somebody to show to feet, hold the ball, bring others into play, and move us up the pitch. Bonne's been up and down since he joined, obviously very raw, but he was fcking crap tonight, doing stupid things. Clearly, having done that, we're in trouble. We're not keeping the ball as we were. We can't string passes together. So you look to bring Carroll on. Again, this makes sense in principal. Carroll was excellent at the weekend, receiving, recycling, showing, giving. Exactly what we stopped doing second half, exactly what we lost when Wiullock went off, I wanted Carroll on too. It made sense. And Geoff is old, has basically played every minute this season, had been injured earlier in the game, and was baggage. It's a fair sub to make. Problem is, we're bringing on a very lightweight player at the same time Rotherham - having already pushed Vassell up with Smith and added an attacking midfielder behind - are now adding Ladapo and going three big bstrds up top, options behind and a full on aerial assault. Likewise Adomah, trying to be a fresh Bright after he'd tired. I do think we're at times a bit quick to criticise "why the fck is he going off, or he not starting, why's he making that sub" when we're not in full possession of who's injured, who's flagging, who they sports science guys have said can only do 60 and so on. Ideal world tonight you leave Willock and Bright exactly where they are, we play the second half like the first, but as I said on here the other week about Adomah - do you think Warburton wants to be taking these players off? Of course not. This is game 2/12 in six weeks. We saw what happened when McClaren flogged the same 11 players through the first half of the season. Bonne was a big problem for us tonight. Didn't do what we needed. And also, trying to just get through the time. We needed to be braver, keep rolling it out off Dieng and trying to play, rather than just trying to punt down the pitch. They were beating us to the first and second balls, we needed to control possession. We tried to play Rotherham at their game, which was never going to go well. I don't really blame Warburton for any of it TBH, I thought each change made sense at the time, and the players just got nervy and panicked. We got the win, that's what matters. It was terrifying. Actually quite fasicnating now thinking back on it, two teams there basically completely changed their styles across the 90 minutes, multiple changes, started with one team 80% on top and ended with the other one similarly dominant.

That's a great post. Sums up the whole scenario perfectly. Why am I surprised? We are going to be a bit bruised and battered this morning, hoping we can summon one more huge effort before the players can have an extra day's rest! I thought he used the subs brilliantly on Saturday but last night we used only three but all our opportunities to use them. We used subs on 60, 66 and 79. This meant we had to play the last eleven minutes plus added, with no sub opportunities left. If he had made a double substitution on 60 instead of one on 60 and another on 66 or a double on 66, he still would have had another opportunity left. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Yep, pretty much as I saw it, what was frustrating in the 2nd half - apart from the needless free kicks given away for stupid fouls and offside - was that practically every time we DID try and play football in that 2nd 45' we got them in trouble - good defending prevented Chair getting the 4th from Willock's pass for example - but that happened far too infrequently 2nd half. Niko - I thought he looked a seriously good player at times and then had a mad 15' where he was all over the place - repeating what's been said before - we can't expect too many great 90's from players that are just starting out and if he WERE producing 90' performances every week, he would be gone in Jan! Referee - Not much to say tonight - thought he had a good game - only debatable point was the penalty shout against Nico 2nd half - think many would have been shouting/typing for that one if it happened at the other end. I thought it was/Mrs PP thought not - so one of them you get sometimes and not others I guess.

Yeh I said no on that one, I thought Niko withdrew from it just about, though stupid to go to ground in the first place. Simmo thought it was. Rotherham follows on socials and the guy I use for the interviews say they have history with that referee.

Well the first 45' bar a 10 minute lull DOES bode well for Friday! And if because of age/injury/history/knocks we have players struggling for 90' then your disliked 5 subs can help us out. Kakay did look a little off the pace, but I wonder of Kane was feeling the effects of that hefty challenge on Saturday? That IS a problem with the 9 man bench - as you say we don't really know who is 100% fit and who is not - MW probably feels an 80% fit Kane is better to have there in an 'emergency' rather than an untried U23 for example.

Definite handball. But if you look at Bright's reaction; he holds his head in his hands because it hit the post. As you say, nobody appealed. For the penalty, there was an instant appeal, although for me, in real time, it looked less obvious

My gut feeling when it happened was red and then the game carried on with minimal fuss. Not too dissimilar to the one Zamora got sent off for at home (Wigan?) in the Prem.
