Chinese Alan on 08:41 - Jun 13 with 1126 views | WarwickHunt | Cleese told The Age newspaper: “If you put nonsense words into the mouth of someone you want to make fun of, you’re not broadcasting their views, you’re making fun of them. The major was an old fossil left over from decades before. We were not supporting his views, we were making fun of them. If they can’t see that — if people are too stupid to see that — what can one say?”

Al-ed No, not Howard, Al-ed. A L E D, Aled. No, it's not Harold, it's Aled, ALLL-EDDD. No, not Alan, Aled. When he goes to get it, he comes home with one for Alex. Bloody foreigners. Now he just orders it for John.

Cleese himself approved changes to the episode - it hasn’t been broadcast in its full form for 7 years or more on the BBC. For him to argue otherwise now is disingenuous. As an aside, his stance about how much he was mocking the major may have more weight if it wasn't obvious that Cleese himself has turned into him. It was him that described London as ‘not an English city’ anymore wasn’t it before flouncing off. He’s a xenophobic old git anyway, so his protests about how ‘right on’ he was seem hollow. Rising Damp actually did mock racist views.

” It was him that described London as ‘not an English city’ anymore.” That’s accurate isn’t it, Lis? Mainstream party politicians and media commentators of every stripe have been describing it as ‘a world city’ for the last decade or so.

"In 2013, it was reported that Cleese agreed for the offending lines to be edited out when it was repeated on TV. "We are very proud of Fawlty Towers and its contribution to British television comedy," a BBC spokesman told the Daily Mail at the time. "But public attitudes have changed significantly since it was made and it was decided to make some minor changes, with the consent of John Cleese's management, to allow the episode to transmit to a family audience at 7.30pm on BBC Two." Presumably because it was scheduled for pre-watershed. He was also doing anything for a few quid at the time. Adults can see it for what it is , unless they are spectacularly thick...or racist. Or, more likely, both. [Post edited 13 Jun 2020 10:42]

Yes, but in this case, I see no reason for having the scene included. It adds nothing and it’s actually just offensive to have that language on a TV comedy show. Plus, as I said, Cleese himself is a right wing tosser and I’m not so sure I entirely believe him.

The Manuel character as well. I watched one quite recently and genuinely thought it hadn’t stood the test of time.

Watching it even as a kid I thought the bullying of the Manuel character was just wrong. FT has been lauded as the funniest sitcom of all time, but for me, it just isn't. Very funny in parts yes, but I think there are better. Porridge, Only Fools, Open All Hours, Cheers, The Office are all better in my book.

I agree, Bryn although I confess that I loved it at the time. For me Yes Minister/Prime Minister is peerless and uncannily as relevant today as it was when it was made.

Chinese Alan on 17:25 - Jun 13 with 877 views | exiledclaseboy | I’ve never seen that scene or the Major character as anything other than a consistent attempt through the 12 episodes to highlight the characters outdated and buffoonish attitude. I’ve just watched the cricket scene again and my view is the same. The characters reaction to the Major throughout highlights the intention and the audience laughs at those attitudes, not along with them. There are far more egregious examples of gratuitously and deliberately offensive sitcoms in the 70s and 80s than Fawlty Towers. Anyway, the episode is back now with the appropriate disclaimer, which is the right thing to do.

I wasn't a fan of Fawlty Towers either, not for exactly the same reasons as the current woke brigade, I just didn't find it that funny, in fact I thought it rather childish.

Special mentions also to Not the Nine o'clock News, Although Griffith Rhys Jones and Mel Smith did redeem themselves somewhat in later years.

One of my favourite all time shows, I had a gut feeling they would pull it something to do with Rigsby saying in the show of Philip chucking spears, and treating him like a jungle man, but Philip always used to rip him to shreds and make him look stupid, so I hope it doesn't happen.
