Squad of loanees and 14 out of contract players 20:34 - Jan 14 with 11712 views | marchamjack | Not being negative, just putting it out there for a discussion. I think we all know why the club’s moving in this direction, but still, not sure where this leaves us heading into next season, let alone longer term. Thoughts?

Squad of loanees and 14 out of contract players on 17:30 - Jan 15 by jackrmee | Ok, yeah true, we would have a chance of signing them. But are you really saying that Guehi is no better than what we have? You don't think that these signing are going to improve our first team and give us a better chance of reaching the playoffs than without them? |
I'm not saying he's no better. I've only seen him play once. I have my doubts, as everyone should when a 19 year old with barely an appearance to his name is brought in. We've seen plenty of examples of players drafted in over the last 18 months who have a big reputation but prove no better than what we already had (Asoro, CCV). He might be world class and settle instantly but Chelsea fans consider him a lesser talent compared to Tomori, who had two EFL loans before his outstanding season at Derby. Brewster might come good, or he might produce no more than Surridge did while Borja catches splinters. He missed over a year through injury. Gallagher is certainly a good player but the problem in our midfield this season has been the shape and structure more than the personnel imo, given how the Celina/Byers/Grimes combination performed last season. We'll still be reliant on the manager getting things right to improve enough to make the playoffs (another 25 points in the remaining 19 games like in our last 19 won't be enough). Guehi suggests to me that defensive outgoings must be imminent, which would hurt our chances more than help them. Hopefully it's just Wilmot going back and Cooper loaned out.

People are bound to have doubts, but maybe he will be class, we don't know until we try. You would prefer we signed no-one and use our u23s for promotion push?

At centre half yes, absolutely. Because then when we fail we'll have developed two more academy products who themselves maybe will be class, we don't know until we try. We're a long way from playing well enough for a promotion push but that's down to the manager. The players showed they can do it last season.

I disagree. We are right in the mix for a playoff spot, and with the addition of these loan signings I can honestly see us claiming one. But let's not kid ourselves on, if we do get in the playoffs it will be purely be down to the fact the standard of the Championship is absolutely atrocious...

That’s fine if we’re giving up with 19 games to go. As it stands we’ve flattered to deceive since September and we’re outside the playoffs on goal difference. We give ourselves the best possible chance, if that means promoting academy players, great. If we can get better players on loan, we do that. It’s not as if we’ve got no chance of overtaking Sheffield Wednesday.

If we want to have a top level academy we have to balance getting (potentially) better players with developing our own, for the longer term benefit of the football club. Relying on our own products isn't equivalent to "giving up", surely the last 18 months has proved that mentality among our fans to be nonsense? Equally loaning in an unproven Guehi isn't exactly "the best possible chance" either. We're potentially sidelining a 19 year old with 2 senior games to his name for a 19 year old with two senior games to his name. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

‘Because when we fail we’ll have developed more academy products’ is giving up. Are all 19 year olds with 2 senior games to their name equal footballers then? The best possible chance is obviously within our financial constraints. If Cooper/Scott/Britton/etc didn’t think Guéhi improved our chances, I’m sure we wouldn’t have signed him. Hopefully these signings give the likes of Cullen, Evans and Cooper the chance to go play regularly somewhere for the rest of the season.

We should definitely be taking a view towards next season given the thread title. It would be idiotic not to plan ahead. Unfortunately from the press conference it sounds like that plan is to build a relationship with Chelsea's academy, so ours is almost certainly being wound down imminently.

I don’t think any of us expected it to last that long from the minute Birch put it on the table. It’s also idiotic to wave the white flag in January while we are 7th. Steve Cooper or not. It’s not as if we’ll have a better chance next season.

You spent last season constantly slagging Potter off aswell. I don't really think it matters whose in charge. Cooper has seen his namesake Brandon play, he's also managed Guehi with the national team, at the moment in his opinion the latter is more suited to a promotion push than the former, there's nothing wrong with that.

Potter got us promoted, did he? Must have missed that. I spent the first half of the season slagging him off for tinkering, and the whole season slagging him off for Nordfeldt. Feel free to tell me I was wrong. But the version of me you've got in your head is easier to argue with, I suppose. I've got an agenda, I hate the football club etc. Whatever gets you hard.

Are you having a breakdown of some sort? No he didn’t get us promoted, does that mean he was a failure? Talking of getting hard, doesn’t look like Mulder is getting other managers (actual managers, computer games don’t count) as excited as he got you. Rightly third choice here and not surprised there hasn’t been any interest.

It's all just opinions mun, don't get worked up For what it's worth, a first class academy would still be very important to us but it won't supply all the players we need , it won't give us the quality in every position so we'd still need to buy or loan players. Getting the balane right is the important thing. We don't want the academy players with most potential missing out to loanees, all we would be doing was improving another teams player for no good reason. At the same time we need the strength in depth, the quality of cover when ther's injuries and suspensions. The out of contract players, that needs looking at. Those we want to keep we need to get signed up asap, if we can't we will know we need to look elsewhere. Those we don't want to keep we should just tell them the big goodbye is coming. I agree about Cabango, it would be wrong if Guehi keeps him out but then, will it be wrong if Gallacher keeps Byers or Gtimes out?

It’s only wrong if Guéhi keeps Cabango out if he does it just because he’s come from Chelsea or they’ve got a guaranteed minutes agreement. As you say, it’s no different to Gallagher keeping Byers out. If we had 10 games left and no chance of playoffs or relegation, then I’d agree, play as many academy players as possible. As it stands we’ve as good a chance of playoffs as anybody. Seems nuts to me not to play our strongest side as often as possible. If that includes Guéhi and Gallagher then great, if it includes Cabango and Byers, even better.
