Having a squad is more than having a team full of so called 'superstar players' - at least Hill recognises this. You only have to look down the road at bury and the players they signed. Dawson - better than Thompson, Bunn - better than Thompson, O'Shea - better than Thompson, Beckford - better than Thompson...
They finished rock bottom and bury fans will tell you they were an awful team full of mercenaries who didn't give a toss about bury.
Joe Thompson is everything I love about Rochdale AFC and if you think they should get rid of him after what he's done for this club then more fool you.

And yes its a squad game, but everyone in the squad should be able to replace players in the starting line up and make an impact, unfortunately thompson isn’t someone who can do that. Barring his goal saturday, he’s been pretty mediocre, you might accept that in the squad and fair play to you, but i don’t as i want to see us get better.

By that meaning players who would obviously live up to your high expectations of being better than Joe Thompson - I listed some obvious ones from our neighbours down the road - get it so far? I presumed you'd be happy replacing Thompson with any of those 4 who I'm sure you'd agree are fairly well known players at this level - they have failed miserably this season and are most probably on at least double of what Thompson is earning. 100 percent agree. To fire Thompson off would be a travesty. Great story, great publicity, inspirational person. JT does the disciplined defensive midfield role very effectively but he gets little recognition for it as it's not flashing lights and cartoon graphics.
The WBA news is good news; let's hope it's a straight cash deal like Hogan (Newcastle approach) and not a cash plus player arrangement (Celtic). |  |

The problem Sweetcorn has is that he's been so ultra critical of JT in the past - he's in a tricky situation now. It must have been awful having to celebrate and cheer a player who has scored one of the most important Rochdale goals in history knowing that he has zero admiration for him as a footballer. | |

The whole Thompson thing is repetitive, so might as well be too: never understood the extremes, he’s a very average footballer who has made the best out of his career and can, as pointed out, do a job in certain formations. He is a remarkable person who has gone through so much and Saturday will be remembered forever, those moments propel players into folklore. He, even more than many others, deserves that.
Would he be in my squad every week next season if we are looking to push on again? No. But he’s earnt the right to prove any doubters wrong. And if we did recruit sufficient quality which meant his role was a very limited one, he’d still obviously be great around the training pitch and in the dressing room. |  |

I’ve not heard Thompson was told to look for employment elsewhere. Where have you heard that? If you wouldn’t mind divulging that is.
And how or why would a young footballer no where near the end of his career have or have found the time to do his coaching badges. Especially one who has been battling cancer for the last couple of years.
