Barry Bennell 22:06 - Feb 15 with 11242 viewssoulboy

I caught the last few minutes on 5 live this evening of an interview with someone (cant remember his name) who was on trial at Dale after being on trial at Crewe. He said Vic Halom was the manager but didnt name the coach who he said had, along with several players, verbally ridiculed and threatened him as it was common knowledge he had been a victim of Bennells at Crewe. It was so bad he just left the club and turned his back on football for good. Can anyone remember who our was coach back then? It makes you think if this was known about throughout the club.

The whole Bennell thing makes me sick. listening to him go on about how he groomed kids in the recorded police interviews was enough for me. I would happily tie him to the back of my van and drag him through the streets. Im usually a "keep it to yourself" type of guy but those guys who have come out as his victims have got balls. Harrowing listening to what he did to them and how it has affected their lives in all sort of negative aspects.

Unfortunately, there seems to have been a widespread attitude in football that it was OK to verbally abuse kids and indeed worse
I think that the introduction of criminal vetting for people working with kids has solved some of this problem and I have to say, my limited contact with the coaches at the Dale academy have always left me with an excellent impression of their professionalism.
All this is a far cry from what a mates son was presented with when he went for a trial a Portsmouth. He was asked what position he played and on replying "midfield" was subjected to a barrage of abuse from a so-called youth coach and then sent to play on the wing. Needless to say he never went back, fortunately he got a much better response at Ajax when he was invited there for trials!

The club as to take a huge responsibility as ignorence isnt a form of defence....

How many of these victims where brought into the clubs youth structure from other clubs and then abused...

What as happened via these vermin makes my stomach churn to put it mildly..

I wonder if those rumours were because of what Barry Bennell was up to. There were rumours of something happening at Crewe with young boys & it could have been that Gradi got linked as he was the only known person there. TBH I had never heard of Bennell until he was first charged

If this director knew, I'm sure many at the club did, Gradi provided a reference for him when he was convicted of child rape in America . Just listened to radio 2 where a victim said other kids would taunt them as bennell's bum boys.seems a lot knew

It was always alleged that Jock stein up at Celtic also knew about the abuse that was going on at the Celtic boys club. Its a sad part of life that these animals will always attach themselves to organisations that cater to children and children's development. I would like to think that these incidents are occurring less with all the safe guarding that goes in place nowadays but I have not seen the statistics.

It also begs the question what should society do with paedophiles? Is there a cure for them or should it be mandatory life sentences or the hangman's noose. I wonder how the hell he was allowed back out in the first place.

It's quite interesting how the country or we as people view these sort of people, it's surprising given everything else that goes on in our bonkers country we don't view such creatures as having an "illness" or even attach it to the broad umbrella of mental illness these days.

I'm not sure what the answer is but I'd happily see blokes like him swing for the crimes he's commited and the irreversible damage he's caused.

If we think it's just confined to football we are seriously kidding ourselves too, an ex of mine was a into (a different) sport at national/international level and it was riddled with such facts/stories years ago, with many too scared to speak out for fear of being "dropped" and a career gone, this was a coach at the very top of his game

The kind of conduct you describe was prevalent amongst the GB swimming squad some years ago and some victims came forward to disclose the abuse and threats they had endured.

These disgusting, vile people should be chemically castrated and imprisoned. If Bennell gets anything less than life imprisonment, it will be an injustice.

I think that the press will inevitably turn their attention towards Dario Gradi and that they will pursue him relentlessly.

What cannot be denied is that Crewe Alexandra have many questions to answer about this period of their history. It is clear that their directors were aware of the allegations being made about Bennell, yet seemingly failed to act.

I remember very well, the rumours and 'terrace talk' in the 1970's and 80's relating to Dario Gradi and his alleged proclivities. Now Bennell has been convicted, there will be no hiding place for anyone at Crewe

I sense further revelations are yet to be discovered.

I watched a programme a while ago on channel four and it was basically about a guy who admitted to having sexual attractions to kids and that he wanted treatment for other guys like himself.

We are at a stage where things like homosexuality and trans people are no longer categorized as mentally ill so maybe pedophiles will go down the route of demanding treatment or accomadations as part of their civil rights (not that Im comparing what gay adults do and what pedophiles do) I know there are government programmes for them in Germany and some of the Scandinavian nations.

Personally I think a bullet would be cheaper and would cut the rate of reoffending one hundred percent.

At his age, it is pretty much a life sentence.

If he sees his 98th birthday, I doubt he'll represent much of a danger to anyone.

He'll probably only spend half of the 30 years inside. That's how these things usually go.

No, there were recommendations from the Judge as to when he will be eligible for parole. I very much doubt he will ever see the light of day again.

Doubtless, there will be those who specifically target him for what he's done. He's chances are slim to say the least.

Doubt he will last a year inside, if he does he will be living it in hellish conditions. Inmates and guards will both detest the scum bag and the coudos of giving him a good hiding or worse will be attractive. Let’s hope he gets what he deserves, tbh I can’t see it getting any different!!!!

It now emerges (via families involved) that Bennell was sacked by Crewe Alex, BECAUSE of his conduct and behaviour towards the younger players. He was confronted by parents about his behaviour towards their kids, the club responded by sacking him and he cleared off to the USA. Rumours had been 'rife' for some time.

However, the club are still denying any knowledge of his conduct .

I think they are digging themselves a massive hole and there are no doubt further revelations to come. Even one of their former directors says Bennell was discussed at board meetings and that the rumours of his conduct were well known throughout the club.

All very sad but not in the least surprising,Crewe could well find themselves with a huge claim going in against them once all this initially calms down

A former Crewe Alexandra employee claims that in 2001 he was asked by a senior official at the club to help wipe pornography off the home computer of then-manager Dario Gradi, the BBC has learned.

Completely by coincidence I have just finished reading a book by Tom Watt which I found in a charity shop.
He interviews dozens of people inside the game (directors, administrators players at all levels, physios, kitmen) and one them was Dario Gradi.
Bearing in this mind that this was published in 1995, Gradi describes how he had to completely change the emphasis at Crewe from signing journeymen to one of youth development and says he made an inspired piece of recruitment in making Barry Bennell a key member of his backroom staff. At the time Bennell was seen as one of the top junior coaches in the country.
MInd you, I also found it amusing when Gradi wrote that he also had to sort out the internal dressing room politics when he first arrivedinvolving a group of cynical old pros.
"The ringleader was a gobby Scouser called Bob Scott who was a mate of Bruce Grobbelaar....."
If clearing the likes of Scott from Gresty Road meant that we stayed up in the great escape of 1979 then Gradi unwittingly did us a massive favour!

We stayed up despite bob scott, not because of him. He was painful to watch.
