I've seen a number of posts saying how crucial January is and that people expect new players to arrive. I wonder if those people might be disappointed though, based purely on Hill's history.
Off the top of my head I can only think of Perkins who Hill's signed permanently in the January window. I'm not counting COG as he was already here on loan. We've had a few notable loan signings such as Alfie, but other than that I can't think of any instances where Hill's been very active in this window. Obviously we could counter that by arguing that this is an unprecedented January for him as he's never been in trouble with us before, so it'll be interesting to see how it pans out.
How many players are people realistically expecting us to sign next month? And which positions?

Knowing how we like to root through the bargain bin and, ironically, the January window isn't normally known for sales, I'm not holding my breath.
Also, having seen how Hilly operates and his inherent stubbornness, I think he will want to prove the non-believers wrong. Another reason to keep the purse strings tight. Slew will be released I'd imagine
Then there's Canavan who with Keane return to fitness will hardly feature.
So that's 4 wages freed.
As for players in, Shrewsbury have used the loan system well, maybe there's a couple of decent additions on loan and I'm sure they'll be a couple of players who know they'll be released by their current clubs in June who'll appear in deals til the end of the season.

I still haven't seen anything from Jordan Williams (11) that sets the pulse racing but I guess he is on a longer contract bearing in mind we paid money for him. Cannon is in and out of the team too often to give me confidence he will eventually prove to be a valuable member of the squad, he is becoming the new RNL. Ntlhe has shown us some glimpses of talent but then Bunney seems to have nailed down the left-back position provided someone (not Inman) plays in midfield to cover when he goes forward.
I guess I would like to see a centre-half (left sided) and a really quick forward who likes running at defenders more than anything. I hoped the forward would be Done but I am yet to see him put in a shift anything like the ones from his previous spell. If there is a 24-year-old Perkins anywhere, please go and sign him Keith. Minimum of 2 on loan
Centre half & pacy goal scoring striker ( I would accept 1 in 4 scoring ratio if they were also assisting & bringing others into the game). However the latter will be very difficult to attract to Dale but if they keep us up may be worth paying 5 months of good money assuming their home club would also chip in and look for game time for them. Our big advantage is that a club looking to bring someone on knows that Hilly will give them game time rather than sit them on the bench [Post edited 19 Dec 2017 7:37]

The difference with this window is, Hill has never really been in a position where he's been struggling in January. He must know something needs to happen and someone needs to come in, whether it's to feature and contribute massively on the pitch or just to give the whole squad a lift. We're in trouble if we can't add to the squad in January.
Obviously this is completely dependent on who is available/we can attract both as signings of our own or loan players. This is what the manager is paid to do and hopefully we'll see some movement inwards. | | | |

I would suspect key areas to recruit in would be;
Centre Half/LB cover
Centre forward
I think that we're well stocked in Midfield and see this as the area Keane is likely to step into once he is back further bolstering the numbers.
Trouble is in January you're unlikely to pick up someone in the best of circumstances. We don't have the money or the attraction as a club to pluck a well performing player from even the tier below us and would likely have to either do our shopping in non-league or...
As some have suggested we look at players who's deals are running out in the summer. Players who perhaps are on the periphery of their respective squads and need the game time. Well worth the gamble on a try before you buy deal. Would imagine Hilly has a hit list and a preferred order and would expect us to get our business done as early as possible in Jan as we need to get the squad settled in for the back end of the season. | | | |

Surely his legs will be gone now? For me its a left centre back,winger and striker. Our midfield has to many people in it already if you include Morley and Adshead who will more than likely feature if we reach a position of safety. Williams from Barrow seems to have disappeared and apart from Done we have no really striker because Davies has the same fitness levels of Steve Evans. KK will be a real boost but for me Hilly will surely have to sell to buy? The squad is massive with players that barely feature |  |

For me, he'd be a great short term option. We've been found wanting in midfield a lot this season and if an old head with bags of experience can come in and help us stay up then great.
I'd look at O'Grady perhaps in January as well for similar reasons. |  |

And it's quite magnificent how David Ball is suddenly considered as a shrewd move, a player who has been the spectacularly average most weeks throughout his career. It'd be much like if they signed Harry Bunn.
