Siggy - needs a rest/move 18:46 - Jan 4 with 7769 viewsTheResurrection

He looked totally ineffective for the vast majority of the game, the cross aside, and the stats back that up.

His most passed to player was Taylor, understandably, but a lowly 7 times and only features towards the bottom of the list. It shows he's not really connecting with any of our team even accounting for him being inside left. He made the one tackle - yes 1 - 3 interceptions, 1 aerial dual and misplaced a 1/3 of his passes 24/36.

Ans last night's game wasn't a one off - it's become the norm.

Having said that, I would worry about our set pieces if he were to be rested or sold as they are a dangerous weapon for us this season.

But overall something needs to happen with him.

Kelly to Tomkins 16
Naughton to Routledge 15
Tomkins to Kelly 13
Tomkins to Delaney 12
Delaney to Cabaye 11
Llorente to Cork 10
Mawson to Fernandez 10
Cabaye to Kelly 9
Ward to Ledley 9
Routledge to Naughton 8
Ledley to Tomkins 8
Hennessey to Benteke 8
Cork to Fernandez 8
Taylor to Llorente 8
Sigurdsson to Taylor 8
Fernandez to Mawson 8
Delaney to Tomkins 7
Ledley to Delaney 7

Siggy - needs a rest/move on 20:32 - Jan 4 by Giff

scored 5 goals and has 8 key contributions out of our 23 goals.

Season so far:

Joint 5th in the league for assists, with Payet, Matic and Zaha
Joint 9th for shots per game, with Costa, Kane and Walcott
Joint 11th for key passes, with Hazard, Puncheon, Snodgrass
Dispossessed per game - very low, just 0.9 and joint lowest with Matic in the top 10 players for assists

The only area where he falls away from the top players in the league is passes per game (average of just 29) and pass completion (average of 75%). Those stats are more in-line with forwards rather than similar attacking midfielders. But considering he's often isolated and the used as the out ball with little support surround him, that's not surprising. His ball retention is excellent though - much better than a forward and more like a defensive midfielder.

I think we can forgive him a few lose passes as he does more with the ones he completes than anyone else on the side.

In short, we don't use him enough in our phases of possession, we'd miss him and I'm sure most teams outside of the top 5 or 6 would take him in a heartbeat.

The thread title is 'Siggy - needs a rest / move'.

I think it should read 'Siggy - needs suitable link up men'.

The guy has shown enough class in both of his spells with us to tell me that we need to match him to the correct man up top / wide, and that we're not currently doing that.

Well last night, of all nights, Llorente linked up superbly. He made an incredible 57 passes in the game. I wouldn't be surprised if that's more than double his usual.

A superb 24 out of 29 (82%) in the first half and as I mentioned in the match thread, he was outstanding in this period. Contrast to this though he was very ordinary/tired in the 2nd half making 17 from 28 (60%) and it showed.

---

Leonwasmental wrote the bible on why these pass combo's don't show much - but what they do show is little units, partnerships and patterns developing throughout the game. Seeing as we had so much of the ball in the first half and Llorente had an absolute stormer you would expect Siggy to be involved more.

Also he created zero chances from open play last night! None!

You can all make as many excuses under the sun - but he aint doing enough and not by a long chalk.

4 pens - which whilst stressful, fans actually expect pro players to score.

And I believe, the assists just include the 1 from open play.

Yes, he's deadly from set pieces, make no mistake. He's just away with the fairies the rest of the time.

We need to see how things shape up under Clement, I agree that he's not performing anywhere near his best & hasn't been for some time.
In open play he's fairly ineffective & we haven't seen him in top form since Wilf left.
If Clement can get us back to our old passing style then Siggy will be a major asset again.

I have a great idea...lets find our problem shall we? Football is about scoring goals.
Rule 1:The team that scores more goals wins the game.

Are we scoring enough goals? Yes. We are scoring an average amount of goals compared to the other teams in league (if you disclude the top 5-6 seats obviously) .

That must mean we are loosing because we let in so many goals (see rule 1.)
Lo and behold, I looked it up! This is indeed the case.

You are suggesting that the man who is the 7th most dangerous player in the premium league 2016 (assists and goals added) might be our problem? Yes, I see it now! no wait..this is all so confusing!

When I critisised "The Rec" the other day I was told to grow a pair and given the impression most posters on here think he's the best thing to happen to the club since Mel Nurse.
Surely this post, suggesting we sell our best player of the last two seasons by a country mile, shows how out of touch he is with the real world ?
He'll probably be along in a minute calling me all the names under the sun and offering to meet me so he can "Ave a word"

Siggy is starting to annoy me with his reluctance to take on the easy pass when someone else is in a better position. As I have said several times on here, he doesn't trust any of his team mates, something Clement can hopefully resolve quickly.

Quality player though, we'd be off our trollies selling him, rest him up in the FA cup though.

If we want to get the best out of Siggy, we need to find a combination that allows him to play in the number 10 role and link effectively with the centre forward, players behind him and wingers. If we play him as a narrow winger or don't have players who will make runs and create space for him, he is always going to work hard, but will flatter to deceive.

His best form came with Bony, Routledge and I think Dyer in the team.

Siggy - needs a rest/move on 10:41 - Jan 5 with 1069 viewsRichardO

Looking at a centre forward receiving the ball to his feet he needs someone to play to , if the wingers are to far forward the CF would have to try and turn(into defender?), so it is up to the midfield/defenders to get closer to receive to ball, once we've progress further up the field then we looking to get the ball to people/positions to hurt the opposition, if the wingers/CF come short then it is up to the midfield to get beyond the forward line and make the defenders think, do I mark or go with the runner, hence Rangel goal and the various chances against Palace (sorry only seen highlights).
The only criticism with Siggy is he is not getting beyond the forward line(in a variation to the wingers) but waiting for the pass so he can try a long range shot, having said that he having to do too much work, the whole team needs to press teams so the gap between the forwards and the midfield is reduce too many time this season the forwards have been isolated.
Defensively we have ended up having one line of players on the edge of the box which have easily been gotten behind.
Bournemouth exploited our weaknesses with continuous movement off the ball making the one-two very easy.
Should we rest Siggy for the cup probably but can the new manger afford to change a winning team (consistency needed to build team work and confidence).
Should we move Siggy on, definitely not but he needs help from team mates, coaching staff and manager.
You have adapt to the different needs of each game and during the game, hopefully the new Manager can get the best out of the whole team.

Your recent support of Jenkins says it all about you. It won't be long before you start trying to rally the In Huw we trust's all over again.

People are always blind on this site until it's too late. You're probably a bigger example than most as you still haven't caught on.

Anyway, back to Siggy, Prince Charming, Golden Boy, Ice man etc etc....

It's strange don't you think that OUR BEST PLAYER EVER!! keeps getting shifted out to the left.... Oh and not just by our 2 or 3 managers, I'm losing count with that mug Jenkins, but also at his time in Spurs?!?

Do you think that's because he's having to carry the whole team? So we stick him out left?

Do you think it's because he has to do the job of left back, right back, centre halves and wingers, strikers and keeper too, like so many keep pathetically trying to make excuses for? So we put him out on the left?

Or is it because we need OH SO MUCH MORE from our number 10 than Siggy can provide us with? (But we don't want to lose his set pieces!!!) So we stick him on the left.

Take your time, most of you, I know this simple game doesn't come that easy to you...

He's no winger? Neither are Routledge, Dyer or Barrow but that's another discussion.

Anyway, I know we had this conversation at the Bournemouth game Chris (remember?) and while I disagreed with you then, I too was frustrated with Gylfi's performance against Palace.

For me, he is trying to be too clever all of the time. Sometimes, probably most of the time, he just needs to get hold of the ball, keep it and find a simple pass. Instead, he always looks for the difficult, fancy flick which, if it comes off would be great, but they rarely do.

I also agree with others that if he had someone that he 'clicked' with a la Bony, then we would see a lot more from him.

Maybe he'll get a rest this weekend - I'd certainly think about it if I was Clement, as the guy's played a lot of football already this season on top of a busy summer with Iceland.

Partnerships are important - it's just that most of the top ones on that list you showed are defenders passing the ball sideways in areas where they're not under pressure. Quite differnt to Siggy who's operating where he's being closed down all the time. I don't think Palace's wingers featured in the list either.

Anyway, I've no problem with him being given a rest now and then, but it's a no to a move from me.

Of course I remember - I was just planting the seed then ;-)

They are wingers though, and 2 of them have been very good for us in that position.

The rest I agree with. Hence my OP really about him not forming any meaningful partnerships or links on the pitch - and that's not just against Palace, it's been all season and more. Him and Bony had a great connection but Bony really was the best we've seen at holding the ball up and we've not had much of that since. Gomis played off the shoulder and mostly off side but was as weak as shit with his back to goal and these 2 Spaniards aren't much better......

However..... Llorente had his best half by miles against Palace, seriously impressive and I've not been able to offer him much praise since he's been here. Now is this just a coincidence that Siggy isn't behind him or just a one off.

Because if it is the former then we can't afford to play Siggy in the number 10 again as we need Llorente on that sort of form and not what we've seen for most of the season.

You're also right about the simple things - Siggy just wants to look for that "clever" chipped ball over the top or in behind and more often than not they are going out for a goal kick. Like you say he needs to concentrate on the little things and start forming partnerships and effective units on the pitch no matter where he is playing. Give and go, receive and give, move into space and repeat. Do this well and the rest will come including the options he's rushing into now before these basics.

If some people on here want to argue with any of the above then talk football and leave the childish comments behind. It would be a better forum if people did chip in with thoughts and opinions instead of just following other sheep around aimlessly.

Listen fella. All I said is that I hope Huw does the right thing for SCFC and that he and his father have been lifelong supporters, and that some of the vitriol was OTT.
I am not chairman of the HJ supporters club.
Personally I don't care who's in charge as long as they start doing what's right for the club.
If that's not HJ then I hope he goes to be replaced by a more suitable candidate. There is no one on the horizon, but I guarantee whilst the Yanks remain in charge the next CEO won' t be from this side of the pond.
As for Siggy, no one can pretend he's had a great season (name one player who has), but to suggest to move him on is madness,
.
Rest him, change the format so we get more out of him, give him all the help he needs, but sell him. You're barking sorry fella
