Brexit .... My thoughts... 11:07 - Jun 16 with 149260 views | JacksDad | The one thing I am certain of re this vote is that no-one knows for sure what the repercussions economically will be if we pull out. If you listen to the experts it will be better if we stay in, however its all unconvincing. My issue is that after 10 years of Austerity, the services in this country have been cut to the bone, that is services that are needed by us all - not just Immigrants/benefit spongers. We are not in a position to afford the enormous gamble if it all goes t1ts up. I am taking my lead from Ray Winston and gambling responsibly and staying in. If we ever get to situation when everything is adequately funded and horrible 0 hours contracts were abolished ... then maybe it might be worth the risk to pull out. But to do it now is a massive gamble which we just cannot afford to lose.

Nigerian Oligarchs are queing as we speak to sign new trade deals with the UK so Rejoice,. Paul Dacre and Murdoch must have some serious dirt on Johnstone for him to pull out so suddenly, perhaps along the lines of 'Yes, I did slay that Bedouin herdsman and then enter into sexual relations with his pretty goats, but that is no reason why I should not become PM of Britain.' Ex-London Mayors are making a habit of disappearing never to be seen again....lol

Brexit .... My thoughts... on 18:30 - Jun 29 by DannytheR | The Economist Intelligence Unit, who are a pretty sober and non-dramatic bunch lent on by a lot of finance houses, have just revised their forecast for the UK from 1.5% growth next year to a 1% contraction. Says lack of credibility in government now = lack of stability in the eyes of the world = long term recession. Next British PM will have to eat "heroic amounts of humble pie" to get into the EEA, and the lack of change in immigration numbers will help fuel the growth of the Far Right. This is their dude. It's pretty grim reading. https://twitter.com/AlexWhite1812 |

The whole thing is a pointless exercise that has only set us British at each other's throats and antagonized our European trading partners. *we will still have to trade with EU whatever the outcome [Post edited 16 Jun 2016 13:32]

Brexit .... My thoughts... on 23:50 - Jun 30 with 1829 views | derbyhoop | The FTSE 100 is now trading above its position on Friday morning. However, the FTSE 100 companies are, by and large, multi national companies who derive much of their earnings in $ or other currencies. They stand to gain from the devaluation of the £. The FTSE 250 which tens to include companies that earn in the UK is still well down on its Friday opening position. The currencies, despite a partial recovery on Tuesday and Wednesday, are well down. The £ has fallen 11 cents against the Euro. My guidance would be a) don't be an ex-pat whose income is paid in £ but whose expenses are incurred in Euros b) don't expect decent earnings from companies that trade with the Eurozone. Things may get better over the next 6 months/years. But don't bet on it.

Brexit .... My thoughts... on 02:23 - Jul 1 with 1782 views | Hoop_Du_Jour | Good to see Theresa May is standing and Boris isn't. She has been a reasonably efficient Home Secretary, not standing for the EUs nonsense about making us keep foreign criminals on our soil at the tax payers expense. From this piece of her candidacy speech, she at least seems to have some grasp of why there was a leave vote and she may actually try to do something about it. .................... "But the mission to make this a country that works for everyone goes further than fighting these injustices. If you’re from an ordinary, working-class family, life is just much harder than many people in politics realise. You have a job, but you don’t always have job security. You have your own home, but you worry about mortgage rates going up. You can just about manage, but you worry about the cost of living and the quality of the local school, because there’s no other choice for you. "Frankly, not everybody in Westminster understands what it’s like to live like this. And some need to be told that what the Government does isn’t a game, it’s a serious business that has real consequences for people’s lives. I will set out more detailed proposals in the coming weeks, but for today I want to be clear: under my leadership, the motives of the Conservative Party will never be in any doubt. And our actions will be bold. We, the Conservatives, will put ourselves at the service of ordinary, working people and we will strive to make Britain a country that works for everyone — regardless of who they are and regardless of where they’re from." | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Brexit .... My thoughts... on 08:46 - Jul 1 with 1718 views | THEBUSH | One aspect of the Brexit, that hasn't been mentioned so far, is the Zionist Lobby that somewhat controls the finances of the Conservative Party. The Zionists want us out of Europe, as the EU leans towards being anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian. Lobbyists of all creeds, exist in the EU and UK parliaments, it's insidious in all Parliaments and almost impossible to control, as money talks. [Post edited 1 Jul 2016 8:51]

They relied too heavily on spelling out the evidence and scoring factual points — tactics that played straight into the hands of Leave. For a debate as visceral as this, facts aren’t enough. Brexit .... My thoughts... on 09:08 - Jul 1 with 1688 views | BrianMcCarthy | This is the most balanced, nuanced and comprehensive piece I've read on the issue all week. I've been disappointed with The Guardian for a while now but this is damn good journalism. http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/jun/30/brexit-disaster-decades-in-the-m "On this point, those who voted remain should, at the very least, concede that had we voted to stay in, the country would not be having this conversation. If remain had won, we would already have returned to pretending that everything was carrying on just fine. Those people who have been forgotten would have stayed forgotten; those communities that have been abandoned would have stayed invisible to all but those who live in them. To insist that they will now suffer most ignores the fact that unless something had changed, they were going to suffer anyway. Those on the remain side who felt they didn’t recognise their own country when they woke up on Friday morning must spare a thought for the pensioner in Redcar or Wolverhampton who has been waking up every morning for the last 30 years, watching factories close and businesses move while the council cuts back services and foreigners arrive, wondering where their world has gone to. Many of those who voted leave will undoubtedly feel that they have had their say after years of being ignored. But they are beginning to discover that they have been lied to. Even when it feels that there is nothing left to lose, it turns out that things can always get worse. And even when it feels like nobody tells you the truth, it turns out that some factions of the elite can and will do more damage to your life than others."

Another misconception, it is not the EU but the ECHR, wholly independent of the EU, which has brought itself into conflict with peoples understandings of Justice, and the horrors of Members signed up to ECHR having to accept perverse Judgements such as Abu Hamzas, ie UK could not deport him. In that, ECHR has to grow, and that might mean compromising, or risk making itself redundant altogether. Voting in or out of the EU has absolutely no bearing whatsoever on the ECHR. Theresa May has twice, sought and failed, to introduce ID Cards to the population against its will, and makes Jack Straw look like Mary Poppins. She is too rigid, too Authoritarian, and profoundly lacks the skills and flexibility that will be required to keep the NI Peace Process intact, which will fall apart with diabolical consequences in the near to medium range future. The spiral downwards will be sudden and shocking. IMHO. Brian, very good piece, long overdue from the Grauniad, the only thing lacking are ideas for solutions to support the communities that both Labour and Tory governments have left to die over the past 30 years. Otherwise very good piece.

That's thoroughly depressing, isn't it. Not just in relation to the EU referendum, but in terms of what we can expect from future elections. Trump is the perfect example: we're gonna build a wall (okay), Mexico's going to pay for it (you sure about that?), we're gonna bring the jobs home (how?), we're gonna build bridges, roads, stuff like that (I think that's an actual quote, by the way), America's gonna be great again, we're gonna bomb ISIS out of existence (cool), don't worry about China and Russia, I've made billions through business, I never leave the room without getting what I want (because achieving a positive outcome in the territorial disputes over the South China sea or the positioning of US forces/missiles in Eastern Europe is exactly like getting planning permission and funding for a hotel in NYC)...absolutely no policy detail or explanation of how he's going to achieve any of that, but a section of American society is lapping it up, and a multi-billionaire son of a property tycoon has somehow managed to convince a significant section of white America that he's the man to lift them from their struggles, and that what he cares about almost as much as himself being rich, is ensuring that working class Americans become rich too. Bizarre and thoroughly depressing to think that we might move ever closer to the jettisoning of reason, detail and proper debate from election campaigns.

It's a very good piece. He also talks about one of the many sad ironies in all this - that both parties have caused huge damage to the very interests they're supposed to defend. The Labour Party have ended up damaging the working class, and the Tory party have ended up damaging finance and the nation.
