The Unfair IMO Criticism Of Ki Sung Yueng 13:32 - Jan 19 with 10608 views | koreanswan | This is not a post to blindly defend a fellow Korean but I was quite disappointed last night to hear the Swans fans beginning to get onto Ki's back and then also the local press scoring him so low and commenting on how bad he was. I can see when Ki has a bad match. Against Sunderland with the team down to 10 men as an experienced international he should have helped hold the team together but he had a bad match and played his part (along with the ref and some other players) in a bad defeat. On the day he was very poor. The home game before this however he got the winning goal and then last night he set up the winning goal. Two huge contributions which could help keep the Swans in the Premier League. What I don't understand is why he is judged so harshly when other midfielders like Cork are not and Leon is lauded as world class? Last night I looked through various reports from Sky, Goal.com, Mirror and all had Ki with the same or better rating than Cork and most had him level with Britton yet on here and in local Swansea media he is being destroyed and his effort questioned? I know that Ki has played injured for Swansea and also played matches without much rest after long haul flights and does everything the coach and the backroom team ask for him. It is not his game to go into tackles which are 60/40 against him. it's his job to keep the ball and he's got the second highest pass % in the league this year (higher than Leon despite the fact Ki plays more dangerous passes). This is not trying to say he is better than Leon or Cork or anyone else. All three are different players with different attributes and make a good midfield. I just feel as the clubs player of the year in the clubs greatest ever season he deserves a little bit more respect from the fans and local media.
The Unfair IMO Criticism Of Ki Sung Yueng on 14:49 - Jan 19 with 1611 views | Nookiejack | I think Koreanswan does have a point though. I am going to stick up for him as long as in future he gets stuck in with regards to 50:50s in dangerous positions. He has delivered 1 goal and 1 assist - in the two games we won 1-0. Leon did hoover everything up but is very unlikely to provide us with attacking threat and goals that Ki can. Although Leon nearly broke through in attack on a few occasions in the first half yesterday. Getting stuck into 40:60 tackles can be silly and lead to injury - which obviously is stupid if player is then out for rest of the season. It is all about decision making and going in fully committed for the 50:50s when in dangerous positions is what fans ask for. Didn't like Ki's through ball just outside their box in second half - when really wasn't on - led t o a very dangerous counter attack. Also thought he found himself in a lot of space on left in second half and that wasn't going to show him in a good light - he obviously hasn't got the speed of a winger - and the space that seemed to be available on left was crying out for a winger there that could tear down the left flank during that part of the match. We sacrificed that though for a more solid midfield and did get the result at end of the day. Team is made up of different types of player, Leon and Ki and we would be much weaker if he left because got peeved off by the fans. He is not a billy bollocks player like Shelvey either. Ki also might be a confidence player - so fans continually getting on his back may not help him. We have been very fortunate with injuries and suspensions this season and don't have a lot of midfield cover - unless bring another midfielder in during the transfer window.

The Unfair IMO Criticism Of Ki Sung Yueng on 14:45 - Jan 19 by skippyjack | Because Watford squeezed up for the 2nd half.. We had no Forward to hold the ball up.. and we had no pace upfront, until Barrow came on. This is why we need a few more signings with pace.. plus our fullbacks are a bit iffy in that system we played. |
They tried to apply that kind of pressure in the first half, too, but the movement of Ki, Cork and Leon (and others dropping off from further forward) provided so many passing options the 3-4 man press was easily played around. Watford had to drop off in response. And Swansea controlled the game. In the second half the same pressing resulted in hurried clearances and panic as the same options weren't available. There was no grand shift in strategy initially. Swansea dropped off to protect against the counter, Deeney moved further forward and Watford controlled things until the final whistle.

No they didn't.. Jurado and Capoue applied pressure towards Cork, Ki and Britton, Deeney and Ighalo played right on the back fours shoulder.. effectively playing two upfront.. therefore Ki, Cork and Britton had to be more conservative.. the first half Jurado and Deeney provided a diamond behind Ighalo.. attempting to play on the break.. the second half Deeney reverted to a front two.. stop talking nonsense First Half.. ..........Ighalo.......... Jurado.........Deeney ..........Capoue......... Behrami....Watson Second Half.. Deeney..Ighalo Jurado...Capoue Behrami..Watson [Post edited 19 Jan 2016 15:05]

The Unfair IMO Criticism Of Ki Sung Yueng on 15:15 - Jan 19 with 1528 views | Dr_Winston | Ki is not and never has been a player likely to get stuck in. Last season he made up for that by being one of the few who looked interested in moving the ball quickly and chipped in with a few goals. For the most part though he's often flattered to deceive.

The Unfair IMO Criticism Of Ki Sung Yueng on 15:31 - Jan 19 with 1475 views | TheKirkyLife | Ki has had flashes this year of brilliance but less criticism because he was POTY last year? Give me a break. He has been weak this season. Mentally and physically. I remember last year when I could genuinely see future Captaining performances and now we've gotten into this relegation battle his true colours have surfaced. He should be an easy selection for the bench nowadays, makes our team weaker. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
The Unfair IMO Criticism Of Ki Sung Yueng on 15:43 - Jan 19 with 1438 views | EasternJack | Sorry - the guy has been with us a few years and hasn't been able to shake off the same two major flaws: Bottling 50/50 tackles Losing possession in dangerous areas Apart from that, I quite like him. Gives more going forward than Leon or Cork, but to be honest - we can do better than this guy. Unless Guidolin can iron out the above issues, I suspect he's going to go back to being a bit part player for us.

The Unfair IMO Criticism Of Ki Sung Yueng on 13:40 - Jan 19 by koreanswan | That is reasonable. Maybe in the current climate of the team he should be going into tackles which are pretty stupid to get involved in just to try and keep the fans on side with the team. In Korea it is viewed as stupid to get involved in 50/50 tackles about 70 yards from your own goal and 40 yards from the oppositions when their is nothing really to be won by doing so. I guess it might be a culture thing too. I just feel he has been very harshly criticized for not an awful lot. All the criticism is all subjective as well... "Not involved", "gives the ball away", "lacks effort, "lethargic"... All these things are not backed up at all by stats. |
When he is on top of his game, Ki is a very good midfielder. His two biggest problems are he switches off, which makes him slow to react and he is scared of a tackle. He has the quality and the physical stature to dominate a midfield, but because he isn't the bravest and his concentration lapses leave him flat footed, games often pass him by. When he first came back from Sunderland, he had developed a streak of controlled aggression and he was a much better player for it. I'm not sure if it is his fault, or it has been coached out of him here, but he hasn't had that for quite a while now. To answer your other points (and this is not intended to be disrespectful to Korean football), there is something seriously wrong if the culture is to concede possession rather than go into a full blooded tackle and try to win the ball 40 yards from your opponents goal. It must be very easy to play out from the back if that is the norm. The national media couldn't really care less about Swansea v Watford. Their player ratings are often all over the place when they don't cover the glory teams. Ki was poor last night and has been for the last few games. Yes it was a good cross, but his overall game was well below what he is capable of.
The Unfair IMO Criticism Of Ki Sung Yueng on 17:25 - Jan 19 with 1321 views | perchrockjack | Ki is incredibly weak and when things arer going well he s fine but is he a man for the trenches? No ,but we re stuck with him so we hope he does well. Last night,as a he did against Sunderland he overplayed only to be bailed out by colleagues who really were doin an extra shift. Sigurddson ran miles as did Corkk si sorry you have to accept criticism was fair. I have a Korean coffee maker

The Unfair IMO Criticism Of Ki Sung Yueng on 17:29 - Jan 19 with 1310 views | GeoffThom | This 50/50 bit is making me smile like I haven't for ages ,I like ki I've stood up for him for a few years now I personally think he's a very good player who as someone said needs a nasty streak to be evoked in him to be a complete player ,I'm also sure he has more goals in him if he only believed in himself ,last night rightly or wrongly he was guilty of bottling a few challenges and yes it it a British thing which makes British football so watchable to the world ,l also read somewhere that last night he had the most competed pass rate something like 93% ,if it's correct I don't know but can see why he's had some stick lately also but what I don't want to see is the little strop he had going off last night after the majority of the crowd clapped him off and he didn't even acknowledge it ,answer is keep going son but try a little more commitment please

The Unfair IMO Criticism Of Ki Sung Yueng on 13:49 - Jan 19 by yogibear_412 | Ki is the best midfielder we got. Fact. He's box to box, and can play in any position in midfield. I was saying to my mate that Ki gets 300% more grief from the crowd than any other player in that side. It grows as well - what started as a few moans ended up being hundreds yelling "kiiiiiiiii" whenever he lost possession. Last night he was getting grief for apparently dodging tackles...sometimes he was never near the ball or player to make a tackle! There were plenty of other instances when players shirked tackles or mis placed passes and hardly nowt was uttered. Support him because he can do what the rest of our midfield can't. |

The Unfair IMO Criticism Of Ki Sung Yueng on 13:41 - Jan 19 by skippyjack | Got to agree with Darran.. he did sh*t out on a few challenges when he should've won the ball.. it's mainly a british mentality.. but he let too many players win the ball before him. that's what people's main gripe is.. eroding challenges he should be winning... this is a ruthless league, and we're in the relegation dog fight.. every challenge he erodes, could be fatal. |
Siggy backed out of a 60/40 in the second half but some players are obviously above criticism. And for the record I didn't shout at him when he didn't either. We're in the middle of a relegation battle and some of our fans want to jump over a certain player's back. It wasn't like he was taking the p*as like Shelvey either. I just don't get it.

Siggy was off his best last night. Tried too many flicks that didn't come off when a simpler ball was on. If any of them had resulted in a goal, I'd have called him a genius, but they didn't' they pretty much all resulted in possession being turned over, that's the nature of the beast. Even when he is having a below par game though, he never hides and always runs himself into the ground, some of our others don't have that kind of fortitude. Ki being amongst them.

Nor me. Great post. Ki's strengths are nicking the ball off opponents toes and setting up attacks. Not quite worked out for him this year along with many other off form players. To suddenly expect him to get stuck in and come out covered in blood like a Russell Coughlan is just plain daft. Different players bring different things to the tablle.

He's never at his best in the diamond. If Ki got the same roar Leon does on every forward run he might get some of his spirit back. It's not like there's any real expectation when Leon charges forward, is there? The groans can't be helping. He's clearly a fragile lad.

No, but Leon is a holding midfielder. If Ki protected the back four like Leon does, he may get a bit more slack. He certainly has the ability to be very effective, he has done it in the past. I'm not sure he has the character for it at the moment though.

They either don't need him because they have better (top 4) or they would like him because they are not in a Relegation battle at the moment and he might improve their squad. But you know so much more than all the other fans, so we must all be wrong. |

Just ignore all these jokers, mate. 99% know feck-all about football and just repeat what the majority says so that nobody points and laughs at them. Ki is class. He's below par at the moment, but form is temporary etc. About 13/14 clubs in the Prem would love to have Ki at their club. We're lucky to have him. He'll come good again. Just sit back and enjoy him whilst he's here. When he goes the fückwits on here will agree what a gem he was, assuming thet their "leaders" on here think the same way. . |

Dave, I do rate Siggy , precisely because his work rate demonstrates just how much he cares about the mess we're in. I slated him last season when he wasn't being more positive in possession but that was down to our poor manager . He did give the ball away quite needlessly last night too but he's above reproach . Ki was being called what a dog wouldn't lick last night and that's not on.
