Valbuena going to Russia? 07:21 - Jul 31 with 2288 views | johnhoop | Somehow the news that it now appears likely that Mathieu Valbuena is now most likely heading for Moscow after all ended up on the Mauricio Isla thread so I've started a proper one to see what people think. The report says that the Russian club are making him a fantastic offer of 10 million Euros over three years and he was unimpressed by the counter offers made by us and West Ham. If this is true I think we've missed out here on getting a truly exceptional player. 10 million Euros sounds a lot but over 3 years it amounts to around £51000 a week-with no transfer fee. We are paying some of our mediocre players more than that. I'm not saying we should start throwing money around like before but is this a case of us being too thrifty for our own good ?

Valbuena going to Russia? on 10:32 - Jul 31 with 2175 views | Alvarado | I don't think so. £50k/week is still a lot of money especially for a small club like ours. We need to cut our coat according to our budget and just because we've messed up before doesn't give us an excuse to carry on doing the same thing. Also, why there wouldn't be a transfer fee? In February this year he extended his contract with Marseille until June 2017.
Valbuena going to Russia? on 10:41 - Jul 31 with 2133 views | danehoop | OK, ignoring the Spackman on this already. As I said on the previous thread, as the sanctions now start to bite, particularly on the financial sector there, along with targeted companies and individuals, it will be interesting to see just how attractive this offer really is. The Russian leagues are not so competitive, require extensive long distance travel and wont overly test him. The sub plot of this story is that he wants to go to Spain, and/or get as lucrative a deal as possible for what is likely to be the last bid contract of his career. No one from Spain has (as yet) come in for him and so his agent is now doing his best on the latter part by driving up the costs of any deal to get maximum for his client. If we came in and offered £52K it probably wouldnt make any difference as I suspect there is preferntial tax treatment for expat footballers in Russia. Clearly the guy wants his big money send off and doesnt really care how it is funded.

Valbuena going to Russia? on 10:52 - Jul 31 with 2078 views | daveB | Don't we have to pay a transfer fee as well? We've made him a good offer by the sound of it, if he wants more money elsewhere or to play in Europe then thats upto him
Valbuena going to Russia? on 11:02 - Jul 31 with 2049 views | adhoc_qpr | Good player, but never going to come to us unless we are the highest bidder - not exactly the mythical 'right sort'. Good to know that we are working to a budget, but we also need to target the right profile of player and not waste our time on the likes of Valbuena who will always get a better off.
Valbuena going to Russia? on 11:05 - Jul 31 with 2040 views | saxbend | How does income tax work in Russia? We might have to pay a hell of a lot more for him to get the equivalent net. I seem to remember reading that Arshavin was very surprised when he saw how much tax he was paying on his wages from Arsenal when he first came over.
Valbuena going to Russia? on 12:02 - Jul 31 with 2002 views | danehoop | Just to add to my earlier post, the owner of Dynamo and the bank he owns (which owns Dynamo) does look to have been targeted by sanctions. Interesting how attractive that transfer might look to Russia now.
