Saints Open To Bids For Alex McCarthy

According to various media sources including the Daily Echo, Southampton are willing to listen to offers for goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

With 4 goalkeepers on the books, one of them was always going to go somewhere for the coming season, even if it was only on a loan deal.

Most assumed that it would be new signing Matteuz Lis, but according to rumours it could actually be Alex McCarthy who might leave St Mary's before the end of the transfer window.

McCarthy who will turn 33 in December was the subject of a lot of speculation regarding his contract at St Mary's, rumours abounded that he had signed a new deal last Autumn, but bizarrely the club made no announcement.

In January McCarthy's agent was shown as having been paid his fee by Saints for negotiating his client's contract in list of agents payments but still no confirmation.

At the time McCarthy was out of the team injured and Fraser Forster had taken over.

With new owners arriving the signing of McCarthy to a new deal seemed to have been jumping the gun a bit, the club have still said little about the deal or indeed it's length, it has been claimed that it is a three year deal, but was that from last August when rumours first appeared of him signing a new deal or from now.

Certainly given the wages he is probably on it is highly unlikely that Saints will be able to get a fee for the keeper, the best they can hope for is to cover his salary by receiving a loan fees.

Since signing in 2016 his 6 seasons in the Saints squad have seen him make 118 appearances in the Premier League, but he has never managed an entire season where he has been undisputed first choice throughout a whole season.

He has only hit 30 League games in a season once and last season managed just 17 appearances.
