Direct from the judge: Justice Goose confirmed the offences did not reach the legal definition of terrorism because he did not kill to further a political, religious or ideological cause. However, he told the packed courtroom that whether the "motivation was terrorism or not misses the point". The definition of terrorism is pretty wide. You could argue this one meets it too: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cqx92gq4z40o |

An even if it was all true, we need to look at why a small number of idiots see fit try try and burn alive innocent people to show their disgust. It's good to have the discussion around the issues caused by the vacuum of information following the arrest, but I'm still asking myself what difference would it have made? The trial wasn't prejudiced, the right person was caught and recieved an almost unprecedented sentence. I'm afraid that for some part of the anger is he wasn't the illegal, small boat migrant they were so desperate for him to be. [Post edited 24 Jan 16:50]

As I said Cat, I don't know the reasons but less kids in school would mean less learning it. I'm just keen for the language not to die out. Any minority language needs support so I'm ok with (the majority) of the promotion of it. |

Agreed. There’s been little talk of where parents are in all these cases. I hope now that justice has been served, concentration is on what happened prior to arrest and not political point scoring. |

I reckon there does need to be a hard look at the CPS over this one in particular. I’ve seen some saying that Starmer should have overruled them and released the information anyway. I can’t see any good coming from those decisions made by a PM. |

That article is excellent and covers so many bases. 1. That there is a concern over how racial sensitivity affected the handling of cases. 2. That cases range much wider than Asian grooming gangs 3. The 2022 national inquiry made 20 recommendations. 19 of which were accepted by the government yet precisely NONE were enacted. I think most of us would accept these as read, so why do we need a national inquiry? I’d think the fastest action would be to get on with the recommendations, meanwhile ensuring that institutions have clear guidance to not use ethnicity to guide decision making. |

I think it’s clear that the instructional reluctance to speak properly around race has been a huge issue and it’s right that it’s highlighted and there is change. My issue (and others on this thread) is that we mustn’t get so far focused on race aspect of child abuse, that other concerns get relegated. Here’s a horrific story from yesterday: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c9w5rkzxjl4o Not a peep on here and that’s a bit of a theme. Threads where a perpetrator is white British are few and far between. Pointing out that vast majority of offences are carried out by this group isn’t being and apologist for the heinous crimes carried out by the gangs. |

I agree. We have to look forward. So many of the agruments made by both sides on both the positives and negatives are flimsy at best and disingenuous at worst. There isn't (nor should there be) a vote in the near future. We've just to get on with it. Having said that, although I wouldn't push for another referendum, I do think we should get past the whole 'lets be nasty to Europe' rubbish and get on with forging positive links with our closest trading partner. |

If you’d caught any of my previous posts on disadvantaged kids you’d know my take on them. I’m not blaming children. It is factual that the demand had raised exponentially against the funding. [Post edited 11 Jan 15:45]

When we hear about councils going bust, selling off assets or taking on loans, it’s almost always down to the rapidly increasing costs of SEN provision which will include transport. The figures Cat mentions above unfortunately are very common. Like social care, where private ventures have come in to satisfy demand, the same has happened with special schools. In my area, a place at a council owned special school comes in at around £40k. A place at one of the private provisions starts at double that. That doesn’t include transport. The number of families wanting/needing this is spiralling and the financial side is out of control. To try and counteract it, councils have put in place more and more barriers to slow down and stop requests. The unintended consequence is that educated parents with money can navigate through the system and those who find it harder can’t. This means this the children who get specialist places aren’t always the ones who need it most. We’ve got a financially crippling service that overall doesn’t work. [Post edited 11 Jan 7:09]
