When we say "rest players". Surely they could wind down their training in between matches. I'm not sports scientist, but are you telling me that 6 calendar days is not enough time to recover? I'm not denying the effort they put in on match day isn't gruelling, but they have 6 full days to recover... Training would be optional if they needed a rest surely? Get yourself home, couple of pints of Guinness, get some pasta and a protein shake down you, chill out on the Monday, game of golf on a tuesday and they should be good to go again from the Wednesday. You can rest when your dead (or in the summer). Strong as possible team please, pile the misery on the scum who tried/did rip us off with our previous managers compensation and hopefully we'll get a big tie in the next round! |

I thought they'd been on sale since 2015!!! |

Given the fact you're losing your best CB, he's young, keen, and playing well, I wouldn't have thought 1m would be too much to ask. Ok, he's untested at championship level, but if he's showing potential and looks ready to step up stop p/$$/£g about and get the deal done. Could even have 4 months working with someone like Darling to gain from his experience before he's off on pastures new. It's called succession planning!!! |
| Forum Reply | The Harry darling rumours begin 😡 at 14:07 6 Jan 2025
We won't truly know until he's embedded in the team and has time to develop. We didn't know how well Monk or Williams would be for us, but both established themselves as fantastic players and leaders for the club. As for where darling goes, to be honest, if he's not going to remain with us, I couldn't give two hours where he ends up (so long as it's not Cardiff). You'd like to think he'd back himself with a move to a strong championship or premiership club, but he can go and play for Accrington Stanley for all I care. And I don't mean that with any animosity. He's fulfilled his side of the bargain by seeing our his contract (I'm not aware of him sending out come and get me pleas to other clubs or going on strike) so he's free to do whatever he wants and what is right for him and his family. The fact he will walk on a free after and have his peak years at another club after the time we've invested in developing him isn't down to Darling. IF the club wanted to retain him long terms he should have been offered better terms and tied down 18 months ago when he had two years left on his contract. If we could extend him, then that gave us more windows and opportunities to cash in on him and re-invest that money back into the squad. The blame lays more at the club IMO but hopefully (expensive) lessons will have been learnt with the new ownership group coming in. |

I've got mixed feelings about it. Southampton confidence is low and there for the taking if we perform. A decent cup run, the excitement and the finances that can bring would be welcome. But I'm also wrestling with we have a small squad who LW clearly pointed out in Saturday who were looking tired so maybe the practical thing to do would give the fringe and U21 players a run out, although I suspect we wouldn't progress if that's the case. I expect both Franco and Grimes to be rested with Allen and Fulton coming in. Myles Peat-Harris will also get a start, potentially along with Pederson and Tjoe-A-On. Think both full backs have already played a lot of football so wouldn't be surprised to see key rested either with Naughton filling the void. Abdulai? |
| Forum Reply | There is no economic logic in keeping Darling. at 15:12 5 Jan 2025
Simply because to win the race of completing his signature and not face stiffer competition in 6 moths time. Come June Darling will have a host if Championship clubs all trying to recruit him on a free. Some of those may be newly promoted to the Premiership and would be even more attractive to Darling. May even get some existing Premiership clubs looking to take him on as backup for their first team. So a club may bid now to try and guarantee his services are secured. As for Darling... For all the reasons and options mentioned above he's likely to wait to see what's offered in the summer and rebuke any approaches (unless the offer is too good to turn down). |

I agree. I've said in another thread that if a club values and wants to retain a player contract extensions should be done from 2 years out of the expiry. Not let it rundown to 12/6 months which fairly puts the pendulum of power towards the player. We're not the first or last club to fall victim of this approach though. Imagine being a Liverpool fan with the prospect of losing all of Virgil, Trent and Salah for free this summer! The stark difference is they have the power to recruit world class replacements but still goes to show the Swans aren't the only club who manages contracts in this way. |
| Forum Reply | We are told that months of planning goes into the transfer windows at 20:50 4 Jan 2025
I don't think that is correct. A player can't start their new contract and move clubs outside the window, but my understanding is negotiations can be done, and deals agreed/completed at any point of the season. I may be wrong, but that's my interpretation of it. |

Just picking up on your point about some fans wanting Martin back??? Why oh why??? He's proven to be totally self obsessed, and a one trick pony. He either refused or couldn't change his tactical style to give Southampton the best chance of survival. That's the footballing issue. Add in how he left, and made us pursue him and his new employers through the legal system to get the right level of compensation. No thank you. He can save his incredibly boring football for another mug of a club and use them as a stepping stone for the next team which falls foul of his "attractive style of play" or "process". |

Yep, it's part and parcel of the game, we're not the biggest fish in the pond so will always lose managers to bigger clubs. But there is a way a manager should conduct himself to his employers and fans he represents. |

I will say I think SSFC have an absolutely gem in the PR department having ready LW comments at his press conference today. Not good enough for me. He has some serious making up to do including beating the scum, getting us into the playoffs, promoted, then sticking two fingers up at Man City before I will even entertain forgiving him. Stranger things have happened but for me his days are gone. |

If he was oblivious to the rumours he certainly didn't took surprised when asked the question and interview. If he was, "go speak to o my agent" shouldn't have been. the response. "I know nothing about this and have no interest" should have been. |

Unbelievable! Thought this would go with the Darts but Littler is smashing it. Good set there from MVG. When Littler is old enough to have an ale or two and finds women it'll all go Pete Ting like my rugby career |

I don't disagree with you Keith. I've stated in another thread that it's all to do with timing. Maybe this week/month mid or end of the season. But I certainly don't expect him to be taking pre season in July. He would have to pull off the impossible to win the fans back around, and I just don't think he's capable. |
