Burn Baby Burn on 21:57 - Feb 8 with 334 views | ReslovenSwan1 | There is a simple principle to understand. Coal oil and gas are fossil fuels and this means when they burn to produce heat and transport they release Co2 and energy that has been stored in the ground. This is the sun's energy from 300 million years ago. This means the release is not in balance causing heating up of the planet. Biomass n the other hand IF and it is a big IF ths wood is obtained from sustainable forests is gree. All the trees burned and carbon release is reabsorbed by newly planted trees and plants. This is notionally is n balance. Burning wood from virgin forests is clearly not in line with these principles if there's is no replanting. It requires good organisation planning and strict regulation. [Post edited 8 Feb 22:04]

The scientists have doubt as outlined in my OP and you'd never guess but wood is being taken from unsustainable sources. The amount of CO2 does not really depend on the source, burning 100 tonnes of wood produces more CO2 than a gallon of petrol. We never get full lifecycle figures for this stuff, you never see a fully absorbed environmental impact assessment for things like electric cars. In the last 50 years we have lost 70 percent of the planet's diversity this gets sod all coverage compared to CO2 emissions as for plastic pollution we seem to be just about waking up to the impacts of micro plastics. We can't bring back extinct species and can't extract micro plastics from animal, plant or human tissues, CO2 on the other hand is part of the natural order. If we really cared about the environment we'd be taking action on the whole system. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cdxnpzzjed1o | ![](/images/avatars/9036.gif) |

Canada is one of the better educated nations and one hopes they are plating as many trees as they chop down. One hope Drax are following the process. The Government should have auditing in place. China is being criticised rightly but I see reports of them planting billions if trees while building coal fired power stations. The world will survive what ever happens. It is the human species which is the concern of many. Using renewables is common sense. It costs a bit more but I buy 'fairly liquid' not some cheap brand because it is cleaner. | ![](/images/avatars/27402.gif) |

Drac say this "But it told Panorama that 77% of the material for its Canadian wood pellets came from sawdust and sawmill residues, with the rest coming from forestry residues and low-grade logs". It could be a pack of lies of course. If I was giving or recieving a £1 billion subsidy I would make sure these claims were audited and the loggers had a convincing replanting operations. It seems everything is too much trouble these days. Ofgen should be auditing not Drax. [Post edited 10 Feb 20:53]

Just think about gifting £1 Billion of tax payers money with no proper supply chain definition or audit. You can only imagine how crap the contract terms are. | ![](/images/avatars/9036.gif) |

Fossil fuels will run out - not any time soon hopefully but its certain. The percentage of renewables will continue to grow and grow. Likewise clean nuclear is here to stay. Opportunities are there. | ![](/images/avatars/9736.gif) |
