I'm watching it now on BBC Wales. The atmosphere of the empty stadium is much enhanced by the 20 Cardiff fans who made the trip.

#MagicoftheCup

They are jumping up and down now. Cardiff have scored.

It's such a a shame that the FA Cup has lost its magic. Always loved FA Cup final day, when it used to be such a magical, wonderful day. It's now the same teams winning it every year. There is.no.point even being in it.

I've switched over to Everton v Peterborough. Goodison looks impressively full. Those Everton fans are a loyal lot.

Oh no don’t give Nick another excuse to have a pop at the fans…

To be fair Everton are a well supported club with a very large fan base to fill 40,000 soon to be 50,000 seats each week

It’s not just the FA cup though is it ?

only 6/7 clubs now win ANY MAJOR CUPS in this country . Leicester was a one off . Money has ruined the game and things aren’t going to change anytime soon .

ITS Dull as dishwater and we get people moaning that some fans don’t attend games.

BOOOOOOORRING

The FA are a disgrace of an organisation and only have themselves to blame for devaluing their flagship competition. Completely sold out to maximise their slice of pie without a thought for the long term consequences. There’s the ridiculous ko times to satisfy foreign tv deals, semi’s at Wembley, pandering to the Premier league by scrapping replays, playing the 5th round midweek….so many shockingly poor anti-football decisions.

All fans, bar none, used to love the cup. You only have to look at the attendances nowadays to see that most couldn't care less anymore. It’s a real shame and another reason to hate modern football for me.

1 teem & Buggalugs have got it spot on, asn says about having a go at the fans and points out Everton's fan base, but football is all relative, if Everton have a bigger fanbase that is 3 times the size and get 40,000 then we should be pulling 13-14k for this game.

I don't have a go at Saints fans, everyone supports the club to the level they want to, I just compare our attendances against other clubs, for some clubs how bad the club is run or how bad the results doesn't stop people going, they go and protest.

We don't have a fan base like that , Everton get out on the streets, we give a strong telling off to Sport republic on social media.

The demographic of our fan base has changed, Everton's doesn't seem to have.

I don't slag our fans off i just compare them to what we aspire to be and then people assume I am slagging the fans off when the comparison doesn't show us in a favourable light.

Official attendance at the Sheffield United v Cardiff FA Cup game last night was 6,126, presumably based on the number of tickets sold, but it didn't look like that many turned up. They are having a great season too and are currently 3rd in the Championship, only 1 point behind the leaders.

Everton do have a massive fanbase and are in a ground that's too small for them. When I started watching football in 1963, they were not only the the biggest club on Merseyside, but along with Man United, one of the 2 biggest in the country and they could get gates over 70,000. They probably still could.

Sheffield United are a similar sized club to us.

Here is the all-time attendance table for comparison:

https://www.englishfootballleaguetables.co.uk/stats/totalavegate.html

The expected small gate for the Swansea cup game is a combination of Saints having the worst Premier League season in history, the high ticket prices and it being seen as only an early round of the FA Cup, a competition which has lost its appeal. Losing our last home game 0-5 to Brentford was the final nail in the coffin for any fans considering buying tickets for this one. As if that weren't enough, the freezing weather and flu epidemic are going to keep any remaining fair weather supporters away. All in all, a 'perfect storm'. The attendance for our league game against Swansea last season was 30,279.

This cup game, albeit against higher league opposition, doesn't appeal to Swansea fans much either. They have sold 600 tickets.

Probably the attendance looked smaller as most were in the main stand at Bramall lane, the side the cameras were on, on Sunday our attendance will look bigger because tv viewers will only see the 3 sides of the ground that are actually open and not the Kingsland stand which is closed where the cameras are.

This seems to be a tactical move by the club to make it look good, but they would have been better served to have made the attendance look better by selling tickets at a reasonable price and filling the ground .

Up to the mid to late 60's Everton were the bigger club in terms of honours won, Liverpool were considered the peoples club, but Bill Shankly changed all that and by 1975 things had changed completely.

I agree Sheffield United are a similar size fanbase to us, but they do so with a smaller potential catchment, Sheffield is a city with approximately 550,000 but they share that with Sheffield Wednesday so half of that is 275,000, which is virtually identical to the population of the Southampton city population.

So from that basis things are even, but then we come to the urban area and Southampton is surrounded by built up areas that have no football teams ie Hythe, Totton, Romsey, Chandlers Ford, Eastleigh, Hedge End, Hamble, all outside the official City boundary, you could also add Winchester.

That gives us an urban area of about 800,000, Sheffield just has Rotherham with a population of 100,000 and has a football team of it's own so will take some but not the majority of football supporters in the town.

Barnsley is quite near Sheffield as is Chesterfield, but again these are town with their own football teams and are out of the urban area.

So we have a far bigger potential catchment numbers than either Sheffield club,

Sheffield get a raw deal in footballing support reputation, but pro rata the two Sheffield clubs combined attendance is one of the the best in the country
