Reported on Beeb the FA has held talks with him over the second hardest job in footy after Marti's.

Doesn't he have a record of falling out with everyone?

Watching the U21s. 3 up. Very very good. Much better to watch than the senior team.

less pressure and playing a pub team certainly helps

Disastrous appointment. Not cause, he's German, not cause he's Chelsea but because he hasn't been through the FA coaching system. Look at how Spain develop coaches just like players. Awful short term thinking.

Kinda of agree, kind of don't. Next in line from the production line approach to takeover from Southgate was Carsley. For all of the affinity/knowledge or the under 21's that he has, that doesnt look like it has necessarily convinced in taking over the senior squad through its transition.

Shame he wasn't given the next 3 games before a decision was made, but he hasn't convinced at this point, and handling of the media which projected some ambivalence towards taking the role substantively probably didn't go down too well. May have been clumsy misspeaking, but a bit careless.

That uncertainty would I am sure have been playing on the minds of FA who I suspect had sounded out informally a number of potential "rated" managers to see who would potentially be available and willing. Suspect that list was a short one, probably even shorter when Klopp decided he wanted more money in Germany working for Redbull with much less stress (albeit undying dislike from most German fans). Pretty sure Pep went nope as well. After that its a small selection of young English managers.

So whilst not my choice I can see the logic of why they have made the decision.

Never knowingly understood

But what if Tuchel comes in and his tactics/system don't follow the coaching pathway set out in the curriculum? It's a dog's breakfast. What if the whole curriculum is set up as 4-3-3 and then Tuchel wants to play 5 at the back? I totally get the need for experience but it comes at too high a cost IMO.

Exactly.

He may do well at the next tournament or the next few but we’ve thrown a long term strategy down the Badezimmer.

Why would a young English coach bother with St George’s now? Done some serious damage to our conveyor belt today IMO.

Can’t call ourselves a top nation until we produce ourselves a top coach.

So who would you have appointed then?
Carsley clearly didn’t want the job after his trial period and hardly took his chance to impress anyhow, so who else?

So you think one of this lot cos they have a badge: I prefer a manager with experience and a track record myself. Think you are being a tad unrealistic looking at some of the names on there 🤣

Aaron Danks (The FA), Adam Barrett (Millwall), Adam Lawrence (Charlton Athletic), Andrew Dawson (Scunthorpe United), Andrew Myers (Chelsea), Benjamin Petty (Leicester City), Christoph Bühler (Schalke), Danny Searle (Aldershot Town), Darren Wassall (Derby County), Hannah Dingley (Burton Albion), Jimmy Gilligan (Nottingham Forest), Jon De Souza (Colchester United), Justin Cochrane (The FA), Kevin O'Connor (Brentford), Lydia Bedford (The FA), Matthew Hamshaw (Rotherham United), Matthew Taylor (Unattached), Mikey Harris (Brighton & Hove Albion), Neil Banfield (Rangers), Pat Lyons (Derby County), Paul McGuinness (The FA), Paul Tait (Everton), Peter Schmeichel (Unattached), Scott Rogers (Blackburn Rovers), Simon Hollyhead (Unattached), Steven Gerrard (Rangers), Steven Greaves (The PFA).

It’s a matter of principle not ability.

If we can’t produce a top coach then tough shit, in the same way it would be tough shit if we couldn’t produce a top right back. You couldn’t just call up Cafu could you?

Devalues the spirit of international football for me. Idealistic? Maybe. It’s just how I feel.

Where Carsley has fallen has been dealing with the media, he's looked completely panicked by it all from day one and talked himself out of the job, that should have been avoidable

Tuchal. England! on 00:29 - Oct 16 with 1985 viewsSydneyRs

Hmm, not sure about this. Media are bad enough at the best of times, but with a German in charge may turn on him very quickly if he doesn't get off to a flying start.

Almost the polar opposite of Southgate who was brilliant at bringing everyone together but tactically lacking. I wish him well of course but jury out for me. Certainly has pedigree in managing big egos, time will tell.

I wanted Carsley to do well, but his team selection v Greece was like the job had been handed to one of the many "handbrake off, "safegate" clowns on social media. If he ever was a chance, that would have ended it. Being repeatedly torn apart by a team as limited as Greece is unacceptable with the talent we have available.

LC hardly exuded the air of a man who really wanted it, and I assume the likes of Howe, Potter, and even Cooper were sounded out, but weren't interested.

The problem here is that while you can train loads of Englishmen to coach, unless they are actually coaching and managing at the top, how are we going to know if they can really cut it in the white heat of competition? And that comes back to the simple fact, that in the eight years GS was in charge, how many Englishmen shone managing the Premiership.

If I'm right, Harry Redknapp is still the last Englishman to win anything as a coach (Pompey FA Cup 2008). Our boys aren't really getting any experience at the top.

Spot on. I don't think enough is done about this by the FA, the English fans generally. I know every support base has its morons but this England away mentality has gone on long enough and tarnishes us all, to the extent when our own flag of St George is seen more symbolic of them then anything else.

The irony that those singing about the Second World War probably have more affinity with the Nazis than the Allies is not lost on many. Shut up about the IRA too, also before most of their time.

Let other countries look small time if they want to sing about wars.

Perhaps sing about players and songs praising England's green and pleasant land or even the players, shock horror.

A forlorn hope.

Said this consistently but in years to come Southgate will become a well loved England manager. Same happened with Bobby Robson

People have thrown grenades at Southgate throughout his time as they did to Robson. When you have had managers like Mclaren and Capello easy to love the bloke you hated years ago.

Southgate stock will increase the more the next few balls up.

Tuchel is a bad appointment for me.

Only German I would have is Klopp. Obviously for most being ex Chelsea is irrelevant but along similar lines, could have accepted Mourinho or Pocchetino if available but although he won the Champions League with Chelsea, I think that was relatively lucky and for me he wasn't a great Chelsea manager.

The FA never fail to amaze with their decisions at times and this one i fear could go horribly wrong. It makes for a potentially tough watch ahead. As said the more Tuchel and his successors balls up, suddenly even those that threw Southgate under the bus, will start eulogising about him.

As Prince William said about Mr Harry and Meghan Princess, as to past history, recollections may widely vary.

Five years down the line after being eliminated at group stage of tournament and then failing to qualify for the tournaments beyond, suddenly Sir Gareth will be lauded.

Seriously though Tuchel !!!!

The press and social media are going throw this bloke under the bus at first sign of incompetency !!!

I don't mind if a Manager is foreign as long as they are the best person for the job. I don't think Tuchal is but then I don't know who is and who's available and wants the job.

Exactly.

His Chelscum past and baseball cap don't help.

Anyway, good luck to him! Give it a few months and they'll be pining for Southgate again.

Personally, I couldn't give a monkeys who is the manager if they do well. I think the issues here are: this appointment is a bit of a flip-flop by the FA from their so called blue print and, it lay foursquare with the way the Premier league has ballsed it up.

Good luck to him, obviously hope he does well, but its a gamble when I thought the FA were working to minimise risk from the equation.

I agree with this, always have.

International Football should be "This is us. This is what we have. Let's go."

Players should declare at 18. Can only play for the Country you were born in or a Country a parent was born in. Similar rule for Managers.

"The opposite of love, after all, is not hate, but indifference."

Lets face it, the pool of English coaches is severely lacking. Maybe some have been paid too much as players, they don't need the ball ache of coaching as a second career. We've all laughed at Lampard, Gerrard and Rooney's failures. Then you got Eddie Howe, who'd have probably been sacked at Newcastle by now if it wasn't for the FFP and cap on their spending. Graham Potter had an absolute disaster at Chelsea.

Thomas Tuchel on an 18 month contract, reasonable decision, maybe just to shut up all the supporters who'd been panning Southgate since 2021's failure to beat Italy. TT will have a crack at the World Cup in North America and the FA are rolling the dice, so what?

Lets not pile in on the negatives and what might happen if the fans start singing dumb songs. Yes it needs to stop but sadly, your'e going to get drunken idiots in all walks of life. At least England fans have appeared to have moved on from the racist sh*t like booing black players which is more than can be said for Spain and various other European countries. And perhaps Ireland and Scotland should look closer to home too with them banging on about the anti English rhetoric which appears to dominate their whole outlook on life.
