Lockdown positive or negative for you ? 22:50 - Apr 20 with 3448 viewsSirjohnalot

How did the original lockdown affect you and your everyday life ?
Did you start a new hobby you kept up ? Continue working either out or home ? Get furloughed ? Sort the house out ? Spend time outside in the lovely Spring ? Sort the house out ? Or was it a nightmare, affect your job, or finances, home school the kids etc ?

Cards on the table, the first three months here in Spain were absolute bliss.
It was a proper lockdown mind.

A great believer in taking anything you like to wherever you want to.

Yeah, my sister in law lives there, she said the same.

I loved it John, total and complete excuse to do nothing but what you wanted.
Still went to the dojo etc, but no pressure to do much else.
Best three months for many years.

All my jury trials cancelled so months taken out of diary at a glance but did work at home for a fraud investigation which was dull but paid the bills, then eventually remote hearings started. Thankfully don’t do police stations anymore, wouldn’t have fancied that in lockdown.

Ended up transforming garage into a gym, best thing that could’ve happened

Personally I hated it. Every minute. I'm a pretty social creature and missed interaction.

I didn't find it mentally difficult but did not enjoy the isolation. I took the dogs for a walk around the local park a couple of times a day and that was it. I genuinely haven't been back there since, I got sick of the place.

To take the positives I got right in to Kamado barbecue cooking and svaved a fair amount of cash.

That’s the difference, neither my wife or I are particularly social. We were both working from home, weather was lovely, enjoyed taking dog out, no commutes. Manchester marathon was cancelled which was a blow as I was in peak marathon shape and I missed parkrun and not seeing my parents but other than that, we were fine. Thankfully we didn’t lose anyone

It made me sit down and realise what is important in life and what I want to do with the time I have left. I know it sounds morbid but I feel it is a positive.

It worked out better for us. My wife was eventually allowed to work from home, after I was told to shield. Saved us a fortune in petrol. I spent most of it on the garden though, we had glorious weather and I spent a long time in the garden, doing as much work as I could manage back then (before my hip replacement) and then sitting down with a book and a cold beer. it was bliss for a while.

It did eventually become very boring and draining though. I developed a bit of an addiction to some of the games my son had on his Xbox, sent ages on Far Cry murdering people!

Good bad or indifferent, we will be paying for this until i go to the great compost bin in the sky.
I worked through so it was a nightmare work to home no pub or football etc, but as i said earlier we made the most of it in work with a weekly take away and cake, but dont tell anyone.

First lockdown was a doddle, summer time, found new local dog walks, garden looked lovely, time to reflect
Second lockdown was a little more difficult, dark nights, little garden time, walks were just once a day, no friends around etc Netflix took a hammering and watching Swans was my pass time

Personally it was fine. Weather was good. We got a second dog. In terms of work I have lost 18 months research time. Workload of admin and teaching much increased.
Ruined a couple of junior researcher careers as they could not deliver on projects. Scummy government made ODA cutbacks that have hugely damaged international research and the Uk’s reputation. New start in July

In a weird way it’s made the criminal law move forward. We now have Cloud Video Platform (cvp) for court hearings. Previously, we had to drive 6 hours eg to Birmingham for a 10 min mention hearing, now you can do those things from home.

It was blummin’ awful for me.

I’ve never worked so hard for such long hours and under so much stress.

I’m so glad it’s behind us 🤞

Well it’s allowing me to move to a University 200 miles away without moving. Some of the issues of loss/reduction of face-to-face teaching are around much poorer experience of research projects, loss of presentations to groups and the worst has been the PhD viva by Zoom. Others like some committee meetings being foreshortened by online are great.

It has also driven some reflection in improving the visual appeal of lectures.

Absolutely. Trials, sentences when defending you have to be there, but spending hours driving between courts, which you don’t get paid for, makes things so much easier. It’s a matter of common sense what things you need to be there for

I found the lockdowns fine, but in terms of the future, its been a brilliant thing for my work/life balance. Being able to work from home some days or do half days, instead of commuting in to work for a 30 minute meeting has been brilliant. Giving me more time to go for a run in the morning or lunchtime, or work on my laptop in the garden, stuff like that. It’s transformed my stress levels.

There’ll always be things that I have to be in work for (I teach so F2F is necessary) and obviously you lose an element of socialising, but I’m not too bothered about that.

I genuinely feel I’m more productive now. The hours I’d spend getting ready and commuting in to work, I’ve answered plenty of emails and completed a lot of admin already by 9am.

The first lockdown was a mixed bag. On a professional level, I was a key worker, more often or not I ended up going in to the office which is about 5 minutes drive from where I live. Work was absolutely manic and very stressful. We still had to deliver the critical services we were responsible for, but the way we worked had to be radically changed, risk assessments, new ways of working to maintain staff and public safety etc etc. We also had to deal and with other organisations who were “stakeholders” and had “interests” in our work and who were in some cases seeking to try and dump their work on us! It was really stressful, had to attend lots of meetings, conflict with others, wrote new policies, develop new procedures, deal with sub contractors, national organisations. Lots of additional admin, very long hours and everything had to be done by yesterday.

On a personal level, once work was out of the way I actually enjoyed the lockdown. Plenty of peace and quiet, no unnecessary trips to the shops just plenty of time for the daily walk, painting the fences, getting the garden sorted and relaxing. It put things like work life balance in to perspective and while I was still “keen” I decided I’d pass up a potential promotion opportunity as the extra cash wasn’t worth the hassle. I’ve no regrets!

Similar to others, work was busier than ever with colleagues and clients working all hours. It was a rewarding period financially but that wasn’t related to my job. Work has been far better since the return to the office, but I’ve never seen such high levels of sickness and absences.

Work wise it was horrendous at the hight of it I was moving double figure patients to the mortuary and I think I've got ptsd because I'm still having nightmares over it not nice and then you come home and your neighbours" working from home" are sat on deckin with a nice glass of something talking shop on mobiles etc and I'm trying to chill

My wife as well worked through out she's a cleaner so she couldn't work from home

Had covid three times now both of us

Socially we both missed going out I love my football cricket and karaoke

It was horrible. I couldn't see my elderly mother or new granddaughter.I'm fortunate that i'm retired, but Mrs CJ worked throughout on the covid wards , and she saw some sights. We know of at least 10 acquaintances who died from covid. The lockdown wasn't meant to be fun , it was to save lives which it did

The positives, made me appreciate family time a lot more and I got lot's of work done around the house.

My wife's a teaching assistant. One of three who ran the 'bubble school' for vulnerable and key worker kids while the teachers delivered online.

But you saw the horror first hand Jim. I hope time heals for you.

Apart from the quiet, crushing boredom. We are social animals and it was weird.
Personally ,we had a grandchild born during lockdown whom we didnt see . Our granddaughter was born in The Hague and we were able to see her grow up but not her brother who was born in Chester. It was what it was and it's not worth whingeing now.

As other posters have said the country and society owe you guys a great debt.

One of my kids was working on a Covid ward at our local hospital, for a 17 year old they’ve seen and dealt with sone harrowing situations and like you have had Covid multiple times. Its had a huge impact on us as family, I’ve got elderly parents and I can count on 1 hand the number of times I’ve gone inside their house over the last 2 years. Covid is rife in the hospital and we don’t know when it’s going to descend on again.

Stay safe.
