Nigel Adkins Five Years On - The Interview
Monday, 14th Sep 2015 15:48

Nigel Adkins joined Saints on 12th September 2010 and was controversially sacked 2 years 4 months later, now he is going to give a frank interview on Southampton Football Club's official youtube channel.

It seems strange that a football club should be devoting a programme on its youtube channel to an ex manager, even more so when you remember the controversial circumstances and the rumours of rifts between Adkins and then Chairman Nicola Cortese from the very moment the club gained promotion to the Premier League.

Whatever happened though Adkins did not deserve the treatment he received from Cortese given that he had taken over at a very difficult time and then in his 28 months presided over two consecutive promotions followed by dragging Saints out of the bottom four of the Premier League under intense pressure.

Perhaps that is why Saints are now recognising the work that Adkins did for the club, back in January 2013 Cortese barely thanked him for his work and virtually wrote him from the history books, shamefully some supporters did exactly the same.

The interview is being described as "Full & Frank" so it will be interesting to see if it is that or glosses over the period.

Hopefully this interview will redress the balance and give Adkins the credit he deserves and allow him that recognition that surely a manager at any other club would have got for the job that Adkins did for Saints.

The interview will be broadcast on the clubs official youtube channel at 6pm this evening (Monday) prior to a live broadcast of the clubs U21 game against Leicester City at 7pm

Interesting when he says about that Reading game in the championship that there was 'a lot going on behind the scenes'.
Wonder what that was.....

I guess maybe we were hoping a bit to much on the "Frank" part, but there might have been legal issues. More likely though, it would have been out of character for the club and Nigel to dig up dirt. Both have too much class.

The Man in the Glasses will always be a club legend.

Adkins was an inspirational appointment, I wasn’t that confident at the time, but he was just what we needed at the time. I felt sad when he left as I thought that we lost something special. And Mauricio Pottechino was a unmitigated disaster… wasn’t he?

I don't think its strange to interview him. The Club recognises Nigel's contribution to SFC and the affection the fans hold for him unlike other ex-chairmen and managers who you would never even see mentioned let alone interviewed. We can reflect over time at our leisure and see who was loyal, who had prioritised their own interests and who had the clubs interests at heart. Nigel is a legend.
