Villa fan here, just to say thanks for an excellent and balanced piece. Needless to say I think you are spot-on with your comments on our club. But I would like to correct one point. You say:

For those of us who are less than enamoured of O'Neill (and I'm one) that isn't the reason. I think that many of us would have been fairly happy with another 6th place - what pissed us off was the way that he bought a whole bunch of mediocre players, put them on colossal wages, and then proceeded to fall out with them and freeze them out of the team. And then to put the proverbial tin lid on it, to spit out his dummy and flounce out of the club only days before the start of the season - leaving us in a mess we are still to struggle out of. Partly Randy Lerner's fault for naivity in letting him have a blank chequebook, sure, but for all his motivational qualities, MON let us down badly.
Anyhow, good luck in staying in the Premier League (I fear we will need the same luck).
