On my annual visits back to Swansea the first pub I'd head for in the evening would either be the Cockett Inn (now sadly gone) or the Queens Hotel in Gloucester Place (probably the best real pub left in the city) specifically to have a pint of hand-pulled Buckleys.

Crying shame they've been bought out, but it's the way of the world, unfortunately.

The home of Tetleys bitter (not the best tasting beer, admittedly) was for 200 + years in Leeds city centre, but is now, shamefully, in Northampton, along with Carlsberg.

Just over Christmas I was downing a 660ml bottle of Bremen's finest Becks and idly read the label and was dismayed to find that it's now brewed in the UK.

As for Boddingtons, a Manchester institution - well, god knows where that's produced these days.

There's no sense of tradition or sentiment in the brewing industry.

You'll have to excuse my appalling ignorance here, but I've never been able to work out how you find out who has down/up arrowed you.

Can someone kindly run me through an idiot-proof, step by step guide on how to do this - in plain English.

Thanks in advance.

Strange coincidence that your cousin was in the band.

My best mate from school, Steve Cannell, also ended up in Alternative TV for a stint as their bass player in the mid 80s, probably after Tyrone Thomas had left.

Bought their first 3 or 4 singles.

Think it was Venom I saw there. Name rings a bell.

Did they ever play downstairs in the Coach and Horses on Wind Street?

I saw a punk band in St Phillips' around this time, but it wasn't Crass. Think it was local boys.

Loved the chaos.

The crunching chords and uncontrolled keening feedback used to give me goosebumps.

What I didn't like about the whole punk scene was the lie that it was somehow "democratic", working class, DIY, and inclusive.

Within a short time it became overrun with preening, middle class poseurs, full of exclusive cliques who'd frown disdainfully at you if you weren't wearing the right gear. The Cure and Siouxsie Souix spring to mind.

Hardly surprising when you consider people like Malcolm McClaren and Vivienne Westwood were 2 of the driving forces behind it.

Alternative TV and The Fall distanced themselves from that kind of degeneracy.

Excellent post.

Now, Pikey, perhaps you can give a coherent and credible response to Dean's post.

Or are you going to stick with childishly waving your miniature Union Jacks for ever?

You're not far wrong.

I'm watching it in the most painful way possible: reading updates on here and on the BBCs football site.

Maybe I should just fork out the money for Swans TV and save myself the agony of being 2 or 3 minutes behind everyone else 😱

What a relief to hear a different perspective, and thanks for making my breakfast reading a little less gloomy.

But this kind of nuts-and-bolts reality won't wash with the airy-fairy nationalists and xenophobes like Pikeyprick on here.

The Spectator is a good read, and I once, briefly, subscribed to it.

But, basically, it clearly supports the Conservative Party, and as such is not particularly well-balanced.

If you're tired of "diversity and inclusivity", abhor the PC brigade, despise the trendy BBC etc. you'll love it.

Not for me, though.

I struggle to take Embery seriously, wholly because he looks scarily like the ginger twin of that well-known Ulster psychopath, Jamie Dornan. 😳
