Sykes is another player who has a big future ahead of him. For a lad of 19/20 he has it all. not afraid to tackle but can drive with the ball and chips in with a few goals from CM.
May find it harder to get regular FT football playing in a CM role, however I have no doubt that if does get the move he deserves, then given time to adapt, he will do a great job. Already had Celtic and Leicester talk to him in the January transfer window. Although after the window closed, he signed a new contract with Glenavon. Not too sure if that was to fend off potential buyers or basically just increase any transfer fee that will inevitably come in for him. |

100%. Im always interested in seeing how other Irish League players have done when they've moved across to FT football, whether they played for Linfield or one of our rivals.
Seeing Paul week in and out, you just knew he was special compared to the others who have went over previously in recent years, and how he has hit the ground running is no surprise to myself or other Linfield fans. I will continue to follow his development.
In terms of Linfield and being "chuffed" lol, I'm not saying that 1 player doesn't make a team, but when he wasn't in our team last year, we were a completely different team altogether. And it's no coincidence how Linfield have went from treble winners last season to 22 points off the league leaders. |

Exciting times for Northern Irish football, with the emergence of players like Paul Smyth, Whyte from Crusaders, Sykes from Glenavon and McGonigle from Coleraine. All young and I believe all have what it takes to take the next step up to full time football "across the water". Whether that be in Scotland or English Championship, League 1 etc.
I believe the 4 players I've mentioned above are the future of NI international football and will all make it to the Senior squad within a season of moving to FT football.
Putting my biased hat on, I believe Paul is the best out of them all, despite only having 1 year in the senior team, whereas the others have established themselves in their respective teams for a number of seasons. |

I would dare say it was because he is one of the most exciting prospects to come from these shores in recent years. A lot of the "Green and White Army" wouldn't be Linfield or infact Irish League fans, and I've had some friends even admit they didn't know who he was until this weekend (which angered me) Lol.
I just hope people aren't putting TOO MUCH expectation on his young shoulders, just yet! |

Obviously delighted to see Paul make his senior international debut yesterday. The goal just topped it off. What I will say is that it really didn't surprise me. Linfield fans were well used to seeing Paul do that every week last season for us. A special talent that has a MASSIVE career ahead of him!
Level headed and tbh, what footballer wouldn't have dreams of playing in the Premier League. If he keeps his head down and continues to work hard, then there will be no doubts that one day he will play Premier League football, whether thats at QPR or another club.
I hope I can get the chance to get over to a QPR game next season and see Paul in action.
You've a special player there lads! |

It's no coincidence that with Paul in our squad last year, we won the league and cup double. Without Paul, we find ourselves in 5th place, some 16 points off the pace!
Its good to see players from our small Irish League getting the recognition they deserve and hopefully he can continue to progress and we will see him in a NI shirt, very soon! |

Absolutely delighted for young Paul. I have been keeping an eye out for your results every week, and obviously to see if he was in the matchday squad. To hear he was starting yesterday was amazing, but the fact that he scored and what turned out to be the winner was even better!
Interested to hear your thoughts, as I recall when he signed, I had told this forum how quick and direct he was, and will give 100% going forward as well as tracking back, with no fear of being tackled, tackling..

He was only with our first team for just over a year. And every time he got the ball, you were just waiting for him to do something exciting. A definite fan favourite, who is a hard worker, and if you listen/read any of his interviews, he is extremely humble off the pitch.
I obviously can't speak for what he is like in training, but he had the chance to go over with Northern Ireland to the Euro's last year and be a part of their "training squad". From what I have heard/read, he impressed Michael O'Neill from what he saw. I really hope this move works out for him and the next time I see him play 'live' is in a Northern Ireland shirt! What I should say is though, he is quite small and some may think he is "too small". However, he is robust in the tackle to and doesn't mind putting himself about. He gets very frustrated, understandably, as he is kicked up and down the pitch most Saturdays, and referees seemingly allow it, then he loses the head and he will pick up the odd yellow card. |

Paul is one of the best talents to come from Linfield and in fact the WHOLE Irish league in many years. He plays with his heart on his sleeve every week, and I for one am devastated that he is leaving Linfield. However, this is a great chance for him and we couldn't stand in his way.
He can play on either wing and also through the middle. He's direct and likes to take players on. Probably more dangerous out wide. Still only 19 and learning all the time. For £150k, QPR have got themselves a smashing player, who could develop into being a great signing long term. Will be keeping a close eye on how he progesses. |
