I’ve always said that 5 subs is too many, and should only benefit the bigger clubs with more talent to bring on,or to slow the game down even more for those teams winning a game.
With teams now able to substitute half their team, the days of a team becoming ‘tired’ with only ten players is over. Add in the increased amount of tactical fouls (see Sam Field) now being made, in part, due to more flexibility in making these additional subs it’s yet another example of the game as a spectacle gone backwards.
On the one hand, he's pacy, prepared to get stuck into a row with the opposition defence (especially as a second half sub), has already got a couple of goals, is young enough to have a good career here and still get a big move etc. And above all that, he's one of our Dev Squad successes, in as much as he's hit the First Team and is making a contribution most weeks. Big thumbs up from me.
On the other hand, however, his control and first touch just aren't consistent enough (which I put down to experience), he gives away some iffy fouls and, Hull City aside, he seems on a different frequency to the rest of the team at times. To be fair, so was Yang yesterday, so it's definitely not just him.
Now, I actually like Alfie, I want him to succeed, but I'm pretty conflicted about where he is currently. Is it that he is being used incorrectly, his age / experience or is he not what I'm hoping for? I don't think he's the messiah buy I'm not convinced he's just a naughty boy either.
Blimey if that is a penalty you should be giving 3 or 4 a game. He runs across Colback. Someone dragging a player to the ground is a foul. Someone running across your legs, whose not even part of the passage of play on an unintentional collision is stretching the fabric. I think I would have said the same had it been a penalty to us. I think, as much as I hate it, that VAR would have seen that as a clear and obvious error. Difficult to know if the Furlong elbow was intentional on a TV replay? We really should have got a point out of this.
Time wasting has reached new low levels. Absolutely spoiling football for me. Goalkeeper needing new studs on his boot - really!!!! He then takes 5 minutes putting his new boot on, tying his laces like a 4 year old and then trying to put his gloves on. Surprised his mum didn’t come out to do it for him. He was later booked for time wasting taking a free kick only to take just as long after he was booked. Ref was a soft touch.
