lovely photo

it took a while to orientate myself:

no South Africa Road (which sounds like a 60s/70s name to me, and instead those large industrial buildings (which i would also love to know the history of if anyone knows)

How we got palnning permission for the stands I'll never know!

Why stop now, just when I'm hating it

I think that those buildings on the White City Estate site were for the Franco-British Exhibition of around 1908 which was a bloody big do, putting the Olympics into the shade. In fact the Olympics arrived as a last minute alternative to Italy as Mount Vesuvius kicked off and we stepped in. Same happened in 1948 when nobody much else could do it so this is the first Olympics that we've ever had time to 'properly' plan for.

There's loads of stuff on the Franco-British exhibition if you Google but here's some postcards:

By WW1, apparently, most of the old Exhibition buildings had been turned into war production facilities. Aircraft assembly, ammunition factories and tent manufacturing were said to have been sited there.

Beautiful photos.

South Africa Rd (like most of the other streets around the estate) got it's name either because of the Olympics in 1908 or the 1934 Empire games which were held at the White City Stadium.

Some of that original wall of the Loft lurks in the gardens in Loftus road. Still being...well a wall!

We were one of the first clubs with lights. The BBC used to have live Rugby League from Loftus Road under lights. They had the cameras on a great big concrete block on the South Africa Road terrace. On Rangers match days kids used to stand on the block, but they stopped the rugby 1)because no one watched and 2) because a couple of kids fell off the block and were badly hurt.

back in 48 they did buy 39 houses in Ellerslie and Loftus Roads for 26250 pounds but a decade later had to sell them because of poor finances.

Thanks Ron.
If they were the same ones that were in place by 1961 they actually made the place seem darker when switched on.

Wiki said it was the first all-enclosed ground in 1981.

There was a station Called Uxbridge Road where the roundabout is.

The Loft had a roof long before that. The open terrace in that clip is the School End. The South Africa road stand had recently been built when I started watching regularly in 69-70. But the Loftus Road stand looked like it had been there forever even then. I was surprised to see that end open in the photos up top.

I remember the 68/69 West Brom game well - we lost 4-0 at home and Jeff Astle tore us apart. Six months later he missed a sitter for England v Pele and Brazil in the World Cup.

The original White City exhibition grounds lasted until about 1937 - http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2004/05_may/11/mv_history . Then the housing estate was built. Looks older than that.

It's interesting to note that South Africa Road lies on the line of an old exhibition road - always wondered why it curves away so sharply.

The history of the ground is well covered on wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loftus_Road The original Loft standing only stand went up in 1938.
