Non-QPR: Buenos Aires/Argentina/Montevideo 01:00 - Feb 14 with 6794 viewsBQPR

I am going to Argentina/Uruguay for 2 weeks in April.

Plan is to spend several days in BA & Montevideo, also visiting Iguazu Falls in the north and El Calafate in Patagonia.

I also want to go to a football match - there will be a local derby in BA while I'm there - Independiente v Racing Club - "el clásico de Avellaneda" - according to Wiki, the second most important rivalry in Argentine football - sounds good!

So I'm angling for tips re the football, things not-to-miss, good bars, restaurants, places to stay in Buenos Aires & Montevideo...

Thanks!

PS Maybe I should add that I'm going with my wife!

Didn't realise that Buenos Aires & Montevideo were so close. Are there two closer capital cities in the world?

I guess Amsterdam and Brussels are pretty close as are Brussels and Luxemburg.

Some very interesting additions to this thread, but FDC, mate! You cracked me open with your spelling of Independiente (Interdependentia!) Beautiful! Sounds like that Monty Python scene about Biggus Dickus and his wife Incontinentia Buttocks! hahaha!

Steak houses? There are some that are good, some that are unnecessary expensive and then there's this little place which happens to be just round the corner from my place: Don Hugo. Recently opened. Just a handful of tables there and the best steak you'll ever have. And trust me...I've been around Buenos Aires and beyond and I've been having Argie steaks since I was born. Fantastic stuff and it's cheap even for us -so you'll have a proper beautiful steak for about 6 pounds (40 pesos)-)

Will give you directions and info on how to get there.

Yes, Racing are my team. One of the big 5. The first proper football side in the early days (something like 9 titles in a row and 11 in 13 years in the 10's and 20's). Won Copa Libertadores (European Cup equivalent) in 1967 and then beat Celtic in the Intercontinental Cup (not Intercontinentia Buttocks Cup!) in the famous battle of Montevideo.

Bigger than QPR in comparison (Racing are the 3rd or 4th biggest club in the nation), but we like to suffer just as much and we always do things the hard way.

Great shout by FDC on the "estancia" thing. I've never been to one myself, but it's highly recommendable.

I also did the boat-that-goes-underneath-the-Iguazu-Falls thing and it was brilliant! Couldn't believe a Spanish tourist didn't want to get wet! She was asking for the boat to stop and we were all telling her to shut up! (Why was she on that boat in the first place? I'll never know!).

Far too many 'e's and 'n's, just took the plunge and threw a load together...
