The Boro Match thread. on 22:41 - Mar 11 by Watford_Ranger | Back in the pub. Make no mistake we will get sucked into something of a relegation battle against all odds. Don’t even know where to begin with how bad that was. That second goal was quite something. I’m so, so bored of Paal. A senior player and consistently weak as piss and clearly just seeing the season out. Not the only culprit by any means but that was a coward’s performance. |
He's not a striker but Paal should have scored in the first half with a clear sight of the goal in the area and he shoots wide.
The Boro Match thread. on 23:08 - Mar 11 with 1622 views | VancouverHoop | More than anything I think we looked knackered. We we've been playing the same core group of players game in and game out and it's starting to show. Like them or not, regulars like Chair, Saito, Dunne, Paal, and Smyth have put in a lot of yards over the past few months. The fact that Andersen seemed so lively when he came just underlined the fact. We... they... badly need the upcoming break.
The Boro Match thread. on 23:25 - Mar 11 with 1539 views | Jigsore | we're a worse team with Colback in it. that spell his absence weaved upon some has well and truly being broken

Looked like we couldn’t be arsed with it for 80 mins which is tough to take when you’ve made the effort to go all that way and support them. Played okay for the last 10 mins which was nearly enough to get a point and tells you all you need to know about what was there first us tonight if we’d played properly.

I'm certainly not critiscing you but can we stop with the knackered comments with these players. They play the same amount as every championship club minus cup games. If anything we're all knackered watching them stroll round for 90 minutes.

Different squads suffer fatigue differently though due to biology, environmental factors, playing style, age, game proximity, or travelling distance. Not saying that’s why we lost tonight, it’s a factor whether we like it or not and not a evenly spread one. [Post edited 12 Mar 0:57]

The break will make no difference: in fact we are usually worse after having a period with no games. I don’t buy that they are knackered: with the lack of running around and hard yards put in compared to most of the teams we play they should be fine.

Agree. A lot of the players who played tonight have had a lot of time on the sidelines this season. Colback, cook, Madsen, chair.

So, what then are the reasons why players who've been competitive over a long spread of matches go off the boil, other than fatigue?

Back from injury but I’m not seeing it . We are gonna get our arses The handed to us sat .

IMO the players either don't understand the tactics or don't believe in the tactics away from home. Either way they are playing way within themselves or can't be arsed. I personally think they can't be arsed. 10 games to go, nothing to play for. Embarrassing.

They are going to have something to play for now. We are free falling back into trouble. Be glad to see the back of the lot of them for a few months in the summer.

I've certainly no background in sports of any kind, but I have worked with a number of people whose work, similarly, is performative and very public. Those who 'fake it' 'dog it' or "can't be arsed" don't last long. An individual work/performance may suck but authentic application can't be faked. Their colleagues know it and their employers recognise it. As do others in the same field. If, as you suggest, they don't believe, or understand, team tactics then the coaches have a problem. I still tend to believe we've a small — in numbers and stature — squad who are experiencing hills and valleys. We know they can play an awful lot better than they did today, because we've seen them do it. I don't see any reason why they can't in the future. [Post edited 12 Mar 3:39]

The Boro Match thread. on 04:31 - Mar 12 with 963 views | Rsole | It’s a tricky situation with so many players OOC or on loan. I would expect the senior players who know they will be here next season to call out the slackers but who played last night from that category ? Off the top of my head that would be Chair, which limits the impact. Add to the mix that most players don’t think they are playing for anything (forget pride) and/or protecting themselves and it rapidly becomes a shitshow. My concern is that the manager ends up thinking the same and when someone waves a wad of cash at him, he starts thinking that a move is a good idea too. The three Rs of recruitment, retention and rehab have a lot of work to do otherwise it’ll roll into next season as well if we are not careful.

Knackered? Thank god we rested our superstars for the cup then. So glad it is going to pay off in our spiral towards 20th.

Haven’t been able to accuse some of our players of that no matter how bad we’ve been at times but I got that impression from a few last night . That midfield was just so non existent and that includes the wide players , that I couldn’t really believe what I was watching . Genuinely annoyed for the travelling fans . You take your chances following the this team around because we might be out played by better teams but a hint or a whiff of a lack of commitment and desire ? That’s unacceptable

I also caught that 'whiff'. Yet, we read this in Marti's post match interview: While frustrated with the end result, Cifuentes was proud of his team’s effort and never-say-die attitude as they battled right until the final whistle. “This is a very honest group,” he said. “We kept pushing and the reality is that this group never gives up." While I wouldn't say the team gave up, there was indeed a lack of commitment from the start.
The Boro Match thread. on 08:14 - Mar 12 with 287 views | rbee | If you watch our players reaction to the first goal you will see plenty of disappointment. Cook seems to be staring at Yang when he should be blocking that cross somehow. We didn't play well but for me the biggest disappointment was our tactics. Boro' started with two makeshift centre half's and we started with Frey as the lone striker and therefore we didn't put them under pressure. After going 1-0 down our tactics didn't change. Do something Marti, anything rather than nothing. Stick Jimmy up front for a while, then put Chair up there, swop Yang and Saito. put Jimmy up front again, mix it up, make 'Boro work for their three points. Safe, too safe and we got what we deserved. [Post edited 12 Mar 8:19]
