Football Governance Bill 09:37 - Mar 6 with 3263 viewsSE_London_Rs

The Football Governance Bill is currently under consideration in the House of Lords. If passed, the Act will establish an Independent Football Regulator. However, this development raises concerns about its potential negative impact on both clubs and fans. I had the opportunity to share my perspective on this issue as part of a discussion on the Academy of Ideas podcast, where I delved into the implications of the Bill.

I would be interested to know your views.

RfromItaly is correct. Fan ownership of football clubs operating in capitalist economies does not work. Real Madrid and FC Barcelona may offer fans a say in the club's direction, but they have high financial barriers for presidential candidates and instances of corruption, such as Barcelona's "Barcagate" scandal, undermine the democratic nature of these structures.

Bayern Munich's fan ownership under the "50+1" rule doesn’t really ensure fans retain control, as corporate influence remains through minority stakeholders like Adidas and Audi, and financial growth is limited compared to EPL/EFL with external investments. RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim are two clubs that have successfully managed to effectively enter private ownership in Germany. For Leipzig, the members are all employees of parent company Red Bull.

In effect big corporates maintain their grip on power with fan owned clubs.

If a fan owned club, even nominally as you say, being top of the world tree will not persuade you or others that fan governance works then I really don’t know what else to say.

There are lots of different models, and I am guilty of mixing fan ownership and governance up, but it is ironic that despite there being 5,000 people on here expressing opinions with authority on all things QPR some would suddenly consider themselves incompetent at the gate of power.

Agree corporatism will still be the dominant power in football but fan ownership / governance is a start.

I use to think that an AFC Wimbledon model might work well for QPR, but I get the impression most QPR fans don't live local to the club, whereas Wimbledon fans seem more rooted in the local area.

In any case, I'd definitely be in favour of some sort of fan representation with regards to the heritage of the club. I'd hate to see us go through another Briatore era re-brand.

I don't think this bill is going to lead to fan ownership but what it might do is give a regulator who might be able to actually do something, seeing how against it the premier league are gives me hope

We have regulators today in the FA, EFL and Premier League who have handed the keys to when we play to television companies, seen prices through the roof, prem clubs starting to stop selling season tickets and a financial fair play system so flawed it's killing the game whilst a game washing in money has every club in England losing millions of pounds every single month.

Maybe it's time for someone else to step in and see if they can do better
