Gerry Francis in 1993 ditched our first all black kit after one disastrous outing wearing it, a 4-1 gubbing at Villa Park first game of the season, thinking it was unlucky and it never saw the light of day again. We replaced it with the all red kit we won at St James's Park in later that season.
If I was Marti, I'd insist that when the hoops can't be worn, the black kit is worn. [Post edited 22 Feb 19:36]

There’s definitely a psychological issue if you play in piss weak kit, it carries no identity either.

Agreed but, if we absolutely have to go with an alternative, I have always loved:
1995 Away Kit. No red or black but still brilliant. Or the 2001 Erikson Silver and Black hoops. | |
