LFW historians 16:58 - Feb 19 with 4937 views | FDC | Can anyone recall what years LFW was on its various platforms and iterations? It occured to me recently that I've been on here, on and off, interacting with many of the same posters for what must 20 years or so? Pretty nuts really. Friends I've had IRL for that sort of time I consider lifelong friends. This little community Clive's created is really something. [Overly moist message ends]

I remember we got a throw and chucking the ball to Mav to take it.

LFW historians on 10:07 - Feb 20 with 1501 views | langtoft | Having been a regular user of .org and then dot.org I moved here at a point when traffic sort of dried up. Ben and DG did a good job of sustaining. Those boards had a lot of good people (& obviously a few tw@ts) but the Saturday afternoon game chat on dial up was hilarious. NYStan, Hud and DM were my particular favourites. Stan in New York knowing about a goal from the offish comms sometimes 2 or 3 minutes head of me on Lincolnshire comms continues to mess with my head! A lot moved over here I'm guessing around 2008 (who knows!). This place over other social media options keeps me (a little more) sane. As always a healthy prompt to say 'thanks Clive'

Hi langtoft. Thanks for reminding me of those match day chats. They were such an absolute hoot I'd often miss what was going on in the football.

Apart from 2003/4 season missing the football detail was often the best outcome mate. They were great fun if you couldn't actually make the game!

LFW historians on 07:24 - Feb 20 by Northernr | Yeh I've forgotten what it was called TBH. Sky absolutely mullered the Rivals makeover to the extent that it collapsed immediately after launch. Such a waste. A lot of us thought they did it deliberately to kill Rivals off and direct people back to Sky's own website but apparently it was just incompetence. A few of us banded together to launch a new network which was led by the Bristol City guy and had backing from Lansdown I think. But the tech was never right on it. I remember sitting up with the other producers until 11pm the night before the opening game of the season, at Bristol City funnily enough, waiting to hear if it would be launched in time for the season. When it did it wasn't ready, right mess. We had a ProBoard set up to tide us over around then. Think that lasted a couple of years but we rarely, if ever, got paid even the lousy couple of hundred quid a month we were owed, and never on time. The guy then upped and disappeared overnight, taking a lot of money with him, and leaving the company with enormous debts that were then on the head of Gav the Ipswich guy who was on the hook for court cases and all sorts as a named director of the company. He then set up Fans Network to keep TWTD, LFW, Planet Swans and a few others going and we've been here since. This site is obviously creaking now though. Needs a redesign. I just wanted to write match reports |
A lot of forums are similar tbh. A huge number of my friends I met on Drownedinsound (or DiS for short). Even towards the end of my time posting there (maybe 2011?) the site was collapsing as I guess no one ever planned to host 20+ years of content. I drop back there now and again cos it's a great way of keeping up with new releases, and it's on a new platform and even that is creaking. But they're brilliant. Maybe I'm a sad sack but I've been a huge forum user all my adult life. Bringing together people who otherwise may not have communed with each other on a shared passion; not as disposable as microblogging sites; more personable than info dumps like reddit. I have 3 pateron subs and they're all for forums cos I think they are a totally unmitigated success of the connectivity era, but the hardest platform to keep going and we need to treasure them.

LFW historians on 16:42 - Feb 20 with 1103 views | PlanetHonneywood | I was on the original .org back in the 90s, which morphed into dot.org for reasons I vaguely recall. Those early days were hilarious and maybe it was due to the innocence of us early adopters. However, the dot.org seemed to deteriorate and I moved here after Clive offered me a Fernandesesque contract. But as for other sites, I think being on one is enough! And of the plethora that's out there, this is the most 'enlightened' and entertaining. The internet has brought is many things alas, exposure to and from people we think monstrous pricks. Here, we seem to have a lot less and we self-regulate rather well I think. Personally, and I know it winds sum up, I love it when a thread is launched on say, 'Lack of QPR Goals', and effortlessly winds it's way to the state of Nepali butterflies via Tosca!! That and the cheese!!!!

LFW historians on 20:28 - Feb 20 with 782 views | finnranger | I remember the old Rivals messageboard days when it was run by Ron and Simon. We played a few friendly matches in the early 2000's against members from Brentford's Beesotted forum. Below is a photo from that first meeting between the two teams at Raynes Park in June 2002, after watching England dismantle Denmark at the Korea/Japan World Cup. Pretty sure that's Ingham in the brown jacket, Road Dog and Maverick are in the front row and GroveR is there, too. Sweepy was indeed the gobby Bees fan who had his head shaved in the bar afterwards. Happy days. [Post edited 21 Feb 0:58]

Varc, jerichoharris and me are also there, along with Coastal. My uncle - a qualified ref - ran the game for us.

LFW historians on 21:34 - Feb 20 with 673 views | Hoopstar | That's me with the closed fist next to GroveR and I think directly in front of yourself E17 - think the keeper was Dazzer who once gave me about 150 old QPR programmes when he was moving house. Feel blessed to have had versions of this forum to get me through the trials of being Rangers - with a big thanks to Northern for all of his work. Really is nothing else like it out there!
LFW historians on 22:01 - Feb 20 with 653 views | finnranger | Hello E17, hope you're well? What a blast from the past, I'd be intrigued to see who's still around and attending R's games after all these years, sincerely hope it's everyone from that photo. Spoke to MattR this week (who's standing next to us on the back row, far right), and met up with Hoopstar before the Blackburn game a few weeks ago. Ron and Simon managed to squeeze a few more friendlies for QPRnet against Brentford and Northampton, I played in all of them but don't think we won a game! We fared much better when entering the LSA Tournament at Loftus Road a couple of years running. Once that folded, a few of us made the switch to ASB (Accrington Stanley Bowles) Supporters Team, playing the fans of whoever QPR were facing that Saturday, home and away, for the next six years. I played the following year , can remember Davman and 100% but not many more. The Beesotted team was run by a Korean guy called Leicester Bee, randomly bumped into him on the tube when I was going to a game a few years later.

I remember Leicester Bee, was a lovely bloke and didn’t show too much animosity towards us! Are you in this team photo, loftboy? Think it was taken in Gunnersbury Park before we headed to Griffin Park for Bircham’s last minute thunderbastard. [Post edited 20 Feb 22:47]

I didn’t play in that one,I played the following season, there is a photo floating about in cyberspace somewhere. We lost 3-2, was 2 up then Beesotted panicked and brought on their full Sunday side who were a lot younger, fitter and faster than most of us! I played centre half, think Bob Malcom with half his pace!

Joseph Hood, I believe. We watched the England game in a small club house next to the pitches. It was 23 years ago, so might have changed a bit! [Post edited 20 Feb 22:44]

LFW historians on 07:09 - Feb 20 by SydneyRs | Aside from Ingham who used to write very long and interesting posts, I also remember Stevenage Hoop (who I had quite a few beers with when he visited Sydney), and Aussie Bee (Brentford fan who posted on the old board and who I ran into watching an England world cup game in 2002). Sweepy Bee was another Brentford fan and quite the pest on our board. He quietened down a bit after someone identified him (he was running for the local council at the time). There was a football game arranged between our board and the Brentford one. Maybe someone here played or was there, but I think Sweepy agreed to have QPR shaved into his head if we won. We did and it was done. There were photos posted at the time. Just realised a couple of posters above were involved in the game, probably should have read the replies first. Anyone remember the legendary "Fulham Boy can't get a seat" thread? [Post edited 20 Feb 7:11]
