I noitice when Dunne is not playing, they don't do this long throw routine. Therefore, I suspect it's more Dunne than Smyth that makes it happen.

Cant recall a direct goal from this but definitely notice how often we get a corner or a shooting opportunity from outside the box as a result of the long throws. Celars first goal away at cardiff came from the ball bouncing around after a long throw and id be surprised if thats the only time this season |  | | |

Yeah Celar's came to mind too. The fact it was from a Smyth 'long throw' made the goal all the more flabbergasting at the time.

Don’t have a strong opinion on the long throws (fairly sure Cook throws it further but obviously of more use in the box and even Bennie hurled in a couple somewhere) but just came here to reiterate my devotion to Paul Smyth no matter how many options available that suit the football hipsters more. I’m pretty sure we could improve it by simply using Jimmy as a decoy though. Everyone knows he’s the target so why not switch it occasionally.
Or use the assumption of a long throw to go short and cross the ball in, like we do on short corners - ok, maybe not that option then.
However you see it, I think we miss it when we don’t use it and it’s become another useful set piece.
Back to the subject of corners, we also complain when we hit the first man from a corner, but as long as it’s our man we sometimes manage to score ! So, maybe send more of our players towards the ball - we were doing that much more earlier in the season but have stopped attacking the near post for a flick or an attempt. |  |

I think we confuse the oppo pretty well by having a pretty short long throw.

He must be doing allright Clive has never compared his long throws to Alberts effort so far .
My favourite part is when he is drying off the ball and rubbing against the boards for his run up he is getting advice from the fans what to do.
His throws are good but not great IMO they just are not deep enough without the flick on.
But its a bit like our corners to be honest we simply get nothing from those oppertunities we have to fix that this spring .
Love Smyth btw and his new cutting inside routine will pay off for us hopefully [Post edited 11 Feb 13:01]

There's something primaeval about long throws and an affront to the notion of it being part of the beautiful game. Personally, I can't stand them.
When the former javalin thrower of Stoke used to launch his V1 rockets, you felt the neanderthals from the Potteries grunting with anticipation and delight at the prospect of the mayhem that was about to unfurl. I don't want to be like Stoke!
That said, I wasn't moaning when Simon Stainrod launched one at Wembley on 22nd May 1982. The thing is, in the intervening 43 years, I'm not sure if I've seen us profit from the same tactic. Gues teams wised up to our shenanigans. |  |

Someone else goes to take said throw, then leaves it to Smyth. The small winger dries the ball on his shirt and takes a moment to smile broadly and chat to some fans. He arches his spine back over the Loftus Road hoardings 0.5 yards from the pitch then flings himself forward and flexes his tiny arms and chest to hurl the ball someway towards the six yard box straight onto the head of Jimmy Dunne/the nearest oppo defender (delete as appropriate, but in the air Dunne usually eats the souls of anyone within his gravitational pull).
I do not think this routine works without Dunne, but it's still usually quite entertaining. |  |

As a long throw it doesn't really work. What it does do though is give us an attacking 'set piece'. So the opposition have to come back, fill their box and defend it. It's useful for getting us up the pitch and causing some issues |  |
