RIP Marianne Faithfull 19:58 - Jan 30 with 1508 views | PinnerR | Gone at 78. She did well to get to that age. 4 years older than me, so obviously one of my desires as a teenager.

Yep, I always thought that my life was pretty fast, but it was sedate compared to her. Hope that means that I've got a few more years in me.

RIP Marianne Faithfull on 09:26 - Jan 31 with 728 views | hubble | What a life she lived. Tragic, harrowing and exhilirating in equal measure. "Her mother was Baroness Eva Sacher-Masoch, a Hungarian, half-Jewish former ballet dancer who had fled the Nazis in World War II. Her father was Major Glyn Faithfull, an eccentric British MI6 agent turned professor of Italian literature. The stage was set for an unusual childhood..." "She was still in school when she met the Rolling Stones in 1964, just as, she says, "London was ready to embrace free love, psychedelics, fashion, Zen, Nietzsche, tribal trinkets, customized existentialism, hedonism and rock-and-roll." She described Mick was "a cheeky little yob"; but she wasn't about to fall for him, not yet. But Jagger and Richards wrote a song for her to record, "As Tears Go By," and the 17-year-old schoolgirl found herself transformed into a pop star." In one sense, she was another Stones casualty, like Anita Pallenberg. If you played with them, you were playing with fire... Her resurrection from a junkie living rough on the streets to return to making music, poetry and performing live was quite remarkable. I loved Broken English when it came out. RIP Marianne.

RIP Marianne Faithfull on 09:55 - Jan 31 with 662 views | w7r | What a life, and what a period to have lived it. She'd seen it all, pretty much experienced it all, and managed to survive it and go on to produce some great music - that voice told it all without saying it. RIP Marianne

In my booze fueled years selling advertising for ITV, whenever there was something due to air featuring Mick/Stones or Marianne, getting on to the agency who had the Mars account was mandatory. The best bit was when you had to explain to a less aware colleagues or buyers why. What a life she had (see Huble and w7r's posts above). RIP

I think that's actually a really classy and respectful tribute from someone who isn't always renowned for such things. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
