Just got to hope Dunne stays fit as that then means the only real cover is Ashby and I was hoping he would be gone. Ideally we let him go back to free up more wages and get a new rb in permanently using the greed up wages

Feel a bit bad for the kid, brought from playing winger in the Portuguese leagues and asked to come and play Oakland A’s football as a RB in the Championship was always likely to be a hiding to nothing.

Will in all likelihood be someone we get a thread on in a few years asking why we let him go when he’s looking good back in the Portuguese league but ultimately there’s more chance of Cifuentes playing half the posters on here so the club needs to move him on and recover whatever they can.

With Santos leaving I'm hoping this means that Dunne is staying.

So no one else has ventured, so could we see Mads and even Celar eased out?

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

I think Ashby could come good and if we want to buy we can. I believe that is the current plan with Ashby. He has pace, has skill, is just making some too risky options which really if ironed out, he could definitely improve and end up to be decent.

Santos, either wasn't happy here or was just nowhere near the required standard. Think its a bit of both.

But the Portugese team, can buy him for £1.7 million at the end of the loan and we even have a 25% sell on fee clause also.

Sounds like a very positive deal as tbh he has been bang average, so could work out very well.

Ashby is not ever going to be a Newcastle player but think his potential ceiling is way higher than Santos for me.

Watch this space !!

I reckon Ashby is a done deal at the end of the season.

Where has this £1.7m fee and 25% sell on information come from? This would be a significant profit for a player that has looked well below par…?

This from the Santos piece made me laugh. Marti on Ashby

"the part he needs to improve is that he needs to be more, let’s say, stable" 😄

One word for it I guess

He also says he has full confidence in him though.

One thing about Marti is he seems to know after giving players chances and seeing them in training who is likely to make the grade eventually and who won't. Partly for me the Ashby situation seemed frustrating because he isn't ours. Maybe he might be eventually so it's worth giving him a more extended trial?

If Santos is valued at £1.7m, what went wrong for him at QPR? Perhaps something went awry behind the scenes.

These references to Santos and Ashby prompt me to wonder what has happened to Osman Kakay. Surely, he is not still out of work? Why is he not featuring regularly at right back in team somewhere, albeit below Championship level?

I tell you what, it is a very good sign for me if we have managed to turn a remarkable profit on Santos. This really does show the model is working if players we've bought have had a terrible time yet we are still getting money for them - compared to the struggles we've had in the past to get any money back on signings. Age and profile of signing really helping.

No fan of Nourry but props to him, or whoever is involved, for this.

Edit- or did we pay money for him? Can't remember.

It all feels a bit spooky as we never do things like this. Been disappointed with Nourry, but fair play to him if we get a fee for Santos. And he was signed for free, so we make profit!

Maybe he'll be played as a winger have a blinding loan and if they don't buy him returns full of confidence a different player.

Maybe.

A sell on would also be a great bit of business as mentioned.

For what its worth, I believe he was a right wing back rather than a winger in Portugal last season, playing in a back 3/5. In that sense, its not like we signed him to compete with Paul Smyth. Just didn't play a back 5 often enough for him to be useful. But yeah hasn't worked out at all.

If we've got any money for him at all, let alone seven figures, that's remarkable.
I'll believe it when I see it. He was available on a free six months ago and he's been poor ever since. Is it an obligation or an option? Or is the decimal point in the wrong place?

17 million would be great.

Santos has been one of the worst players I've seen wear the shirt. He might turn into a player but he is just about to turn 24.

I got to be honest, you have to think Vitoria will be putting their wallets away when they see him play. But if we get 1.7million profit for him in a year, then Christian Nourry was wearing a Dick Turpin mask when he did it.

Think it says 'option' in the article. Another reason to hope it really works out for him - in Portugal, and then later in Madrid.
