Change to alcohol duty starts in 2 days, stronger wines go up by about a quid.
So head off to the shop for a few bottles of your favourite vino collapso.

Reduced for sparkling wines though, so your Bolly will be cheaper.

It's really only that big a rise for Port (£1.30) and Sherry (97p).

For lower alcohol wines you're talking just a few pence extra; for average strength wines around 13%, it's a 20p-30p increase; while for 14% it's +43p and 14.5% it's +54p.

And for some strange reason, when you get to 15%+, the rise is only 11p.

So unless you disconnect the drip, the average middle-class bloke is not going to notice much difference due to his wife's hobby.

I love wine. Who’s with me?

Loads of old pony on the label about pineapple and straw and stuff that just isn’t there.

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

Your pony leaves pineapples in the straw? That's not what mine leaves me!

It might be sensible and cost-effective to read John 2:1-12 for clues on the chemical formula to turn water into wine.

Saying that I paid £8 a neck oil in the Wheatsheaf? (Fullers Ealing) 2 weeks ago.

That's a bottle of Casillero del Diablo!

Murphy's is £5 in the Dublin Castle (or was a month ago) for those who partake.

Our neighbour used to work in a hotel and, for whatever reason, has a large store of old wine. Not vintage, just 'old'.

He very kindly gave us a few recently. I tried one on Friday night, a Rioja reserva from M&S - 2006. A good year for it I'm sure.

Anyway the point is, for the first time I finally grasped some of the more unusually daft hints and flavours that people come up with, because this one really did taste of pencils.

Jilly Goolden (spelling?) once described a wine as tasting of Heathrow Airport tarmac. Just feck off.

Basically, it revolves around the father of the bride in Cana going something like this, 'Crap, we've run out of wine, but we've lots of water. Oi, Jesus, we need a miracle!'

See further the LFW Glossary thread for the QPR equivalent of running out of wine, too.

I’ve had a few heavy-strength stouts and porters on the tarmacadam tasting spectrum.

My favourite Jubbly Golden (sp) was after tasting a white (or maybe a bubbly) she enthused “mm ice cream applauding!” I use that a lot myself now. Except when eating ice cream.

My HBC is still on offer in Tesco. Plus have two litre bottles in back up. It’s my birthday tomorrow and I’m popping into The Pav for a bit.

I’ve got this in hand Daniel.
