Hull 21:54 - Jan 19 with 2969 viewswombat

With morgan playing way too many minutes for hie age and Sheff we’d coming up on sat , do we give him a rest for Tuesday and bring in Colback ? Morgan is then rested and hopefully able to kick Bannon on up on the air numerous times at LR ?

If you want Bannon kicking, you want Colback playing?

It's a good thought but can Colback play in that position? I'm not sure he can. Perhaps it would be better to save Colback for Saturday to do the job on Bannon.

We definitely need a nasty midfielder on Saturday to counter Bannon. I would start with colback and bring Morgan on at 60.

we need both , surely by now marti has sussed that the usual leave the bald tw"t to do what he wants dosnt work , so we need somebody to be nipping at his heels as much as possible , not sure colback has it in him to do that get go , so has to be morgan to start few little trips kicks elbows , karate kicks to warm up then colback comes on to finish the job

I thought the cup game was about giving him a rest so he'd be OK for this week

I hate modern football. They're footballers, make them run around for 90 minutes three times a week whilst coping with the stress of huge wages, massive cars, wine, women and song.

We'll soon get to the point where we rest everyone for every game and I will be upfront with my Mum. And she's 89, so better rest her the following week.

I am not sure but Colback may have had a reaction very early after coming on with his recent injury.....if fully fit then play him at Hull.

… because there’s lots of other sports where elite highly-tuned athletes are expected to give it 100% in a competitive environment three times a week without a break?

Cmon now, it’s not the 80s where players could smoke 20 a day and get away with it

Yes there are? Luke Littler had to go to Bahrain only a few days after the world championships :-)

I just find the resting stuff so tiresome, I know (of course) it has to be done blah blah blah but.....I am just old and grumpy.

Who said he's played too many minutes? That's why we employ a sports science team. If they say he's good, play him.

All that walking to pick his arrows out of the board, I'm surprised he could make it through the VIP terminal to his first class seat.

he does suffer with performances tailing off when we play the 3 game weeks , esp with two being long hauls away from LR

Sheffield Weds looked a decent side yesterday against Leeds, mind you Leeds got after them on both wings throughout the whole game, Wednesday couldn't get near James on the right, ( I'm sure Marti noted for Smyth) and Leeds forced Bannon deeper and deeper in the second half, but as mentioned he is very effective at this level and he always has a bloody blinder against us.
Good news is their Centre Forward called back by Southampton, ( presumably to play in goal?).

What a player Bannon is, to be 35 years old and still make message boards quake with fear. It's not even our next fixture and we're still planning on how to deal with him. He does always seem to turn into the worlds greatest against us.

Probably because we give him the freedom of the pitch every time he plays against us. Let’s hope we’ve finally learned our lesson for Saturday.
The sight of the tvat celebrating in front of the Loft is one I never want to see again.
Personally I’d put Morgan on him because he’s less likely to get sent off than Colback and has the energy to keep on top of Bannan all the time they’re in possession.

Colback's left footed and him and Field can play that advanced midfielder on the left Infront of Varane, but on the right its Morgan or Madsen(god help us).

Morgan had a rest with only 20 mins vs Leicester, and I see no reason to rest him vs Hull especially given the likely replacement would be Madsen

Now that Morgan Varanne and Field are forming a very strong partnership in midfield for once it might be them chasing us, ( but we have got to take our chances, can't afford a repeat of Plymouth).

Colback was well off the pace when he came on, on Saturday, not ready for a start IMHO for another couple of weeks

Totally agree, not fully match fit on, probably won’t be tomorrow.

Maybe he’s carrying something still, which makes him more likely to make dangerous late tackles and gob off if he’s in pain.

I’d start Morgan but give them 45 each depending on where we are at half time.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

On the subject of needing a break, you often hear players say in interviews that they are looking forward to the break (like Fox let slip the other day). Almost as if they now also believe themselves this is the way. I don't quite buy into it either. I would think a hard day of training would be just as tough, if not tougher, than an actual game? Physically, at least.

What I would find a drag as player is to tag along on these away trips just to sit on the bench, which many do. Then I would much rather give a player a day off to just be busy with something else if it was a "rotation" selection.

I think Sintz says the same thing on commentary - he’d want to play every game he could but wasn’t so bothered with training in a busy week.

Paul McGrath’s approach probably wouldn’t work anymore but bloody hell, he could outperform most without any training at all apparently.

And then there are those that clearly benefit from intensive training and coaching massively. Takes all sorts.

On the bench or not, seems to raise more controversy and difficult questions than any other form of selection sometimes.

Pro tennis players are probably getting longer breaks between tournaments, though, and they run around 2km per match as opposed to 10km for footballers. So not really a valid comparison.

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?
