A game abroad - any recommendations 13:00 - Jan 16 with 619 views | Jevlar | Hi all, thought I'd ask the LFW collective of any thoughts on a game abroad and if anyone had any recommendations of great sites/companies to book through and just as importantly to avoid. It's been a long term aim of main to see a game aboard and as I have some Basque heritage (one of the Spanish lot that moved to Notting Hill) So I am thinking I'll get myself to an Athletic Bilbao game... anyone on here made that trip or similar to La Liga... In fact you can even buy at the box office there as long as its not one of the big games. I bought a ticket for a home game v Alaves at lunchtime for a 9pm kick off on a Friday. Lovely city, lovely part of the world in general. No experience booking through companies unfortunately.

Thanks Aston - ideal bit of info there, yeah I'll be looking for an Athletic game for sure. Good to know it's relatively straight forward once you're there!

Was over there last year and eight of us bought our tickets from the club. Sorry, never used a travel company either. Can't recommend Athletic Bilbao enough. Cracking stadium, great atmosphere (considering how few away fans travel in La Liga) and a superb city with great transport links. P.S. Watch those kick-off times in La Liga. They move around a lot for TV. P.P.S. Lots of local teams around the Basque Country if you want to catch a second game while out there. Buses are great, trains are sketchy enough. Thanks Brian! As a fan of tapas as well, Bilbao and San Sebastian is the weekend trip I have in mind. Reckon, I'll steer clear of travel companies and book my own flights and accommodation and buy tickets directly. Far easier than I expected!!

Book flights and hotels to your convenience and Spanish stadia are *never* full apart from when the big 2 are in town. I used to live in Málaga (other end of the country entirely!) and would just rock up before ko and either buy a ticket from the box office or there were always kids hanging about trying to sell their season ticket

A game abroad - any recommendations on 16:01 - Jan 16 with 217 views | derbyhoop | Over the last 18 months I've been to Lille, Lyon and Bordeaux. Not fir football matches, though. All 3 are lovely stadia. On a par with the best of the PL grounds. Lille is the easiest to get to as the Eurostar goes directly from St Pancras. [Post edited 16 Jan 16:04]

| "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the Earth all one's lifetime." (Mark Twain)

Thanks so much for all the replies. Lille is a great shout - easily doable in a day from London as well!
