I get the reasoning from the Welsh FA, but think they should be excluded from the English cup competitions if they do, rather than forfeiting prize money or European qualification. If you want to commit to Welsh Cup competitions and the benefits that will bring to the clubs and qualification for Europe, then commit fully. I think its a great choice for Welsh clubs and the FAW, but don't think its fair to then try to be able to benefit from being in the English competitions as well.
That said, it's about cup competitions so of no relevance or interest to us. |  |

Where this really PISSES ME OFF is I’d give my right gohnad to see QPR away in Europe in a proper cup competition…… doesn’t matter if it’s a Hungarian fishing village team (in fact that might even be the preference)

I thought that it was finally established a while back that if the play in the EFL/PL that they relinquished affiliation to the Welsh FA (or whatever it was all about). How can it now change back, one or the other surely and as said, if they choose this route then they can no longer participate in the FA and League Cups…… or, we’re all allowed to join in the Welsh Cup too. |  | | |

Morning all,
I love reading the posts looking for a balanced conversation and understand the different viewpoints. I get the cup perspective and from what I have read they can still compete in both English competitions but won't qualify if they win either the FA Cup or the league.
From a Welsh perspective it still needs to get the OK from the FA but and i'm not naive its an opportunity to grow the Welsh game, we currently sit something like 49/52 in the coefficient which i think is below the Irish leagues - so the league is pretty poor!
The 4 have agreed not to take financial gain from the competition itself, I think gate receipts etc from matches will go to the Welsh league which would then be spread around those league clubs - I don't think that will include if/when they qualify for Europe!
Raising the standard and quality of the competition is the idea and it will then get reviewed every four years.
I understand the counter arguments and look forward to some healthy debate. | | | |

Hereford won the Welsh Cup in 1990. Shrewsbury used to win it fairly regularly in the 70s & 80s. Neither of them qualified for Europe (sadly in my opinion, Hereford v Osasuna would be the Ernest Hemingway derby). If any of the sheep-shaggers won the FA Cup I doubt they’d be allowed that route into Europe if they also have the Welsh Cup route. I could be wrong. Cmon someone tell me what I should be getting angry about here.

I prefer the relevant countries to play in their own countries leagues / competitions and none should overlap.
However, i quite like the idea of 4 welsh teams, playing in a compo of 4 scottish, , 4 english and 4 northern irish teams.
That could be interesting.

I understand your point and as a QPR fan i share that view, that I want my club to be successful on the pitch - their route might be percievably easier but they would still have to go to the effort on the pitch to make it successful.

Dave, they have done this in Union and the quality of that league is embarrassing and sadly just from a cost perspective getting fans to travel from say Cardiff to Glasgow isn't getting bums on seats or improving the competition as a whole.
All the FAW are looking to do is to improve the standards of its league and grow the game more in Wales. | | | |

It's not perceivably easier it's 100 X easier . In order for us to qualify for Europe we would have to finish top 7 in the Premier League or win a major trophy.
They have to beat Bangor town etc and then probably one the EFL Welsh clubs in the final . I know which route I would prefer.
If they want to compete in the Welsh cup and easy route to European football then that's fine but they shouldn't be allowed to compete in the EFL .

OK. I understand your viewpoint.
Yes, it probably will be easier for one of the four to win the Welsh cup than it would be for us to qualify for Europe. Qualifying and competing are two different things though, they would have to give the competition due respect and as we have seen and discussed on other chats the likes of Brentford still prioritize the league over actually winning silverware.
For clubs like Bangor like in the FA Cup its a chance to test themselves against a better standard of teams and in a one off situation such as the magic of the cup you might get a different outcome. TNS have themselves as a Welsh league club been able to qualify and compete in Europe.
As i said in my youth the big four used to play in the Welsh cup but didn't really take it seriously and at that stage their was an opportunity to play in Europe as well.
Going back to my original post, these clubs rightly or wrongly have been competing in the EFL since before I was born and have been accepted into the pyramid. If it gets ratified by the FA then it will be reviewed in four years time by the FAW and the relevant bodies. | | | |

Remember when we traveled down there for the 2003 POF and were told, that while the Welsh national anthem was necessary, the playing of GSTQ would anger the locals or some such tosh! Not that I give a flying rat's backside about national anthems, it shows their football mentality in a somewhat petulant light in my humble.
Of course, what would stir it up would be if the English FA said: you can play in your country's cup competitions, but either not in ours or, English clubs should be invited as well. Now of course, UEFA would be very irate at Welsh and maybe English clubs getting two goes at having their Welsh cake (delicious as they are) and wanting to eat it, but anyone know what their take is on this?
I'm sure many Welsh teams actually playing in the Welsh football set-up are not too happy either. Maybe it's time to tell Swansea, Cardiff and Wrexham that in the interests of Welsh football, it would be best if they stayed on the other side of Offa's Dyke!! | |
