To save polluting the TV thread, I thought I'd start a thread for the films we've seen this year.
I saw A Real Pain the other day and it's a really nicely put together piece by Jesse Eisenberg. It unpeels like an onion, with each layer getting closer to the central pint. Good film.
Babygirl could have been so much better. Nicole Kidman does well but it all feels a bit 'off'.

The ones I’ve watched since the Oscar nods were announced:
The Substance - It was ok but I think it could have been better by being more subtle. But that’s not really the point of body horror, I suppose. Still a bit surprised it’s a Best Picture nom, but not mad about it.
A Real Pain - I loved it and wish it earned a Best Pic nod.
Juror No. 2 - Meh. The days of being floored by an Eastwood movie seem to be in the past. I know this isn’t nominated for anything, nor should it.
Also watched American Beauty for the first time in ages, this time with our university-age son. #awkward? I really liked that movie when it was released but it was a bit of a rough rewatch. Junior was not impressed. |
The Substance was proper have it's cake and eat it. You're not really satirising unrealistic and over sexualised treatment of women in entertainment if you're also having long, overly sexualised takes.
But it was ok. Then the final act started. My wife was laughing through the whole thing, and I think I audibly sighed when it ended |  | | |

Finally got round to watching Nickel Boys. It's really tough and took me a minute to get used to the Peep Show shooting style but really pays off. I like the flashback/flashforward style which enhances the storytelling. | |

I saw Becoming Led Zeppelin this afternoon. Rather than tell the well known excesses and, shall we say, dark side of the band's story, it focuses on the music. Covering the pre-band days and albums 1 and 2 it was a perfect documentary for me with lots of footage I've never seen before. If you were ever into them, go see. You'll love it. |  | | |

Got to see A Complete Unknown today, 12:20pm.Vue @ Staines, recliner - had pretty much the whole screen to myself.
I loved it, the music, the actual sound in the Cinema really brings the Live acts to life. Great performance by all the cast, they really brought Dylan and that whole Folk scene back to life and the emotion behind the songs.

Lived the Holdovers! They released it again in my local cinema over Christmas and I went and saw it on the big screen. As you say, love Giamatti and when these kinds of films are done well, they're some of the best.

Hard Truths is full on Mike Leigh, who specialises in these bleak domestic dramas. He assembles a cast without having a script, which then emerges through months of rehearsal. The performances are outstanding. Somehow he makes these stories of people's empty lives entertaining and even funny. The man's a genius. |
Saw Hard Truth yesterday excellent acting goes between very sad and funny in places my god not sure how I would cope living with someone who can pick argument with everyone they meet..clearly needed help. Mike Leigh is very clever at these films. Also Maria Is good especially if you have no knowledge of Maria Callas life. Angelina Jolie brilliant in the role. | | | |

I saw I'm Still Here on Tuesday, a Brazilian film about the military dictatorship of the 1970s and what happened to a family when the husband/ father disappeared. Based on a true story. I thought it was very good, the lead actor (the mother) in particular - she was terrific.The Army's secret police was menacing without being overtly violent, and the way the film showed her as she aged - while still seeking out the truth - was very impressive.
I also enjoyed Anora, A Real Pain, and A Complete Unknown. Thought Emelia Perez was bonkers. |  | | |

Watched another 10 films since my last update... The key highlights
A Real Pain - great film, I like Kieran Culkiun anyway and this was a vehicle for him to be completely brilliant in a role that was super relateable and honest. It was funny too which means the moving bits land well.
Zone of Interest - Late to this party, but fckin hell. Great performances and it's hard to express why the not seeing but knowing almost felt more impactful. I rewatched it shortly after and the small details and some of the dialogue is particularly chilling. A difficult but really good watch.
Love Lies Bleeding - Not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't really this... Like a Cronenberg Lesbian Horror. Kristen Stewart is amazing. I dunno, someone else watch it so they can tell me what I saw
Anora - Already mentioned, but I loved this film. A Gen Z 18 rated Pretty Woman. Everyone is great in it and there's also lots of blue for the dads
Road to Perdition - We've all seen this right? It gets a rewatch every couple of years from me. The tommy gun scene in the rain is *chefs kiss*
Prey - Saw it in the cinema first time as I'm an absolute sucker for the Predator franchise, and like the recent Alien film, it's better than most of the mid-late sequels but nowhere near the original two. Fun idea though, and I'd watch 100 films of different versions of the Predator turning up at various points in time and fckin shít up.
The Negotiator - An old DVD film I haven't seen in ages. Samuel L, Kevin Spacey, Paul Giammati, and a host of people who you might not immediately know by name but who have been in hundreds of films and always smack. The best hostage negotiator in the business is framed so takes hostages himself while his old team try to get him. FUN.
BONUS! Romeo Must Die - I was about 16 when this came out and it was Jet Li double scissor kicking people while the film cuts to X-Ray and shows bones breaking and spines compacting. Throw in DMX and I don't know how anyone could not have fun in this movie [Post edited 13 Feb 18:42]

One for Disco maybe, All The Right Movies podcast are doing Blue Velvet this week.
I dip in and out of ATRM but whenever I listen I remember how good the hosts are, and want to go and immediately watch the film they're discussing.
Watched Alien Romulus on a flight last week, basically agreed with all the comments on here. Good fun, if you like Alien and Aliens it's an entertaining watch without doing anything especially interesting. Avoids the ponderous world building of the other sequels/ prequels
Also watched Speak No Evil. Stressful, but better than I expected. James McAvoy having a great time chewing the scenery to bits. He plays sinister well. You know where the films going pretty much before you watch it, but kept me entertained |  | | |

The Brutalist
First time since I used to go with my mates of a Saturday morning to the cinema in South Harrow in the early 70s, that there's been a break halfway through!
And boy, do you need it because it's way too long. Which is a shame as I think the film loses something as a result.
However, I wouldn't advise against seeing it, just bring a yoga mat to stretch at half time and some sarnies for the journey home as you'll be ravinous from being away from food for so long. Also, if you go during daylight hours, bring sunglasses so you're not startled upon exiting the cinema after several hours of light depravation.
Needless to say, a tactical nudge from Mrs PH was required as I threatened to go from dozing off to deep sleep via snoring. But, it's not a problem as I caught up with what I'd missed within a couple of hours. |  |
