Varane 09:27 - Jan 2 with 3294 viewsstainrods_elbow

For me, still has plenty of improving to do and certainly hasn't won me over yet. Erratic passing, doesn't influence games enough, and terrible shooting - the chance he missed yesterday was really poor and shows his lack of composure. He breaks things up a bit and is an upgrade on Dozzell, but even with Colback's injury proneness and bouts of ill-discipline, I'd probably still play him over JV right now. Thoughts?

The one he missed wouldn’t have counted he was offside, linesman flagged and the ref acknowledged as the ball had gone out for a goal kick anyhow.
If he was perfect he wouldn’t be playing for us.
Cant believe after a 4th home win on the bounce you’re digging a player out who has improved remarkably from his earlier performances.

I didn't say he hadn't improved (I think he has somewhat); I said he hadn't convinced me yet. And if he was offside, so what?

Because we were really good yesterday (and we were, and I enjoyed it as much as anyone) doesn't mean I can't raise/solicit opinions about a newish player, does it?

Thought he was excellent yesterday as he has generally been for the last couple of months. But yes, shooting practice required - he seems to rush his shots, so maybe needs to relax and pick his spot.

I really feel this guy will improve and could well be a big money sale in the near future.

Championship is rapid paced football which he is settling into at a steady pace.

Heaps of praise on him from Sam Field in a recent interview.

He has improved as we as a team have improved. Yes a few rickets here and there but only 23 I'm really impressed(maybe easily) with him think we have a serious player on our hands.

captains fantastic

Agree but where he was and where he is are miles apart. Colback has 12 odd years on him with experience of Prem etc so logically you would expect him to be wiser, but next season Varane will be 1st choice after one season in the Championship. I never appreciated how hard it is for players to adjust to this league. I also remember when he was interviewed he admitted he isn’t the best at getting the ball between the posts, hence the deeper role methinks. Upgrade on Dozzell is an understatement, you and I would have been that.

His passing can still be poor and he offers very little when attacking. Clive likes to point out that 6'4" Madsen is useless in the air but Varane is only an inch shorter and might as well not exist at attacking corners/free kicks etc. (with the slight mitigation that every set piece we take is aimed directly at Jimmy Dunne, for good reason).

He's improved massively in his main role and he clearly has the talent to play better going forwards - he does some filthy stuff on the ball which, a bit like when Jimmy does it, looks ridiculous given his size - and he has played some nice passes from time to time, but it's a big area for development. Hopefully we're in a place to coach that and he's willing to work on it, because I think the ability is there.

Erratic passing? Yesterday his pass success stat was 94%, the best on the pitch.

Other than Nardi and Kaito to start with the new signings were underwhelming in their performances for the first quarter of the season. Nardi, still for me is the signing the summer. I believe he is better than Dieng. Kaito has come off a bit, but I still like him a lot, Dembele, hopefully will feel like a new signing in February when it is suggested he returns. Morrison when not injured looks a great find and will no doubt be the long term replacement for Cook, Ashby had his best game yesterday. Morgan, what a find….., money to bank there one day. Bennie, I think has a future. At 18 he doesn’t mind putting his foot in. And Verane has certainly creating a good partnership with Field. That leaves Madsen, who I feel could be a really good player, but whether he can adapt to the rigours of the championship is another matter, Celar, was more than unlucky to get the injury when he did. And that leaves Santos. Been unlucky, played out of position because of bad transfer planning, but he is young and hopefully a bit of graft and we may have a player there. And with the development of Kolli I think we have a better squad than last season.

For me his impact is shown when not playing. We looked open and lost against 3 poor teams in a row, Hull, Derby and Portsmouth. All 3 are poor sides. We need to have someone who just sits in front of back 4 to provide a shield.

These damn stats get in the way of all good arguments :) Then again, those 6 stray passes out of 100 could be costly

Of course Varane isn’t the finished article. If he was, he wouldn’t be playing for us. It’s not rocket science to spot that a 23 year old playing his first season in English football for a lower-midtable team might have holes in his game that more experienced (and expensively assembled) opponents are able to exploit.

Whatever his weaknesses (and I think the stats show up your point about his passing), I’d pick Varane over Colback most weeks for loads of reasons: he’s playing well, his run in the team has coincided with our our upturn in form, he’s forming a solid understanding with Field and Morgan, having a right footer alongside Field works better than two left-footed players, he’s less injury prone than Colback, is younger, and has a higher ceiling if he keeps playing and improving.

Our whole model as a club requires us to take players that have improving to do and… improving them, which Varane has clearly done while Colback’s been out. If his performances suddenlycrater then maybe there’s a conversation to be had, but dropping him now, for a 35 year old who wouldn’t even necessarily improve the team in the short term, makes no sense.

It’s very strange to me that anyone would come on here the day after arguably our best win of the season to dig a specific player out like this, but oh well.

Varane, Morgan, Field is so much more mobile than any midfield seen here for years.

Its nice to have Colback return to fitness but he should only be back up to these lads when required, which will still mean regular games as they’ll be plenty more late onslaughts from the Norwich Watford outfits in this league

Agree. Thought he was excellent yesterday. Also the one he 'missed' /offside chance was a much harder finish than it looked. The ball was spinning quite madly when he hit it. Furthermore, he was instrumental in creating the move that led to the chance in the first place, with some deft footwork down in the corner. Got a great view of this from Hu Block.

It's all about opinions, of course, and you make some fair points, ed 83. I just rate Colback more highly, and think he's more consistent and has more nous, even though his attitude is surly, he gets carded more often than Field, and he's a mouthy sod. Sure, Varane is improving, but I think he could also improve plenty by possibly being used more sparingly now everyone is back rather than being under pressure to perform week in, week out. In the words of Johnny Lydon, I could be wrong, I could be right. Someone else can perhaps dig out the post, but the stats on our points return when JC plays, if memory serves, are also about as impressive as those pertaining to Cook. For me, he gives good glue, and also has more of an eye for goal.

As I've said, I'm fairly comfortable with both celebrating the team's performance and wondering critically about a specific player on my own thread (which I don't think equates to my 'digging him out'), but if you find me very strange for soliciting opinions about one of the team as I was, so be it. (People often are.)

The minute colback came on with 5 minutes to go I immediately said to Stowmarket “bet you a fiver he gets booked”. He didn’t but for all his strengths his ability to pick up needless bookings has and will cost us.

Not defending Colback ....but just look at some of the bookings our players get. 50% are because they are being idiots. Varane being one of them and cost us at Blackburn when he got booked and the send off!!!! You need to look at the bigger picture.

Think he’s being too cautious since then. He raced back to try to get to Chakvetadze and should have taken him out but decided to not give away free kick and get a yellow. Then ball layed off and we conceded. It’s a tough one as he does the foul and it’s free kick in dangerous position but think we were very stretched so take one for team.

Colback is much more experienced and will be important in the weeks ahead .
But Varane’s athleticism and speed around the pitch will make him more important I think .
He is still adapting of course and will have off games , but he is growing in stature bit by bit.

With the ball he needs to improve but so does Field…and for me they have both improved ball retention. But for Varane especially, that’s not his main reason for being in the team. He’s an enforcer and he’s starting to be pretty good one .

As for ‘silly bookings’, no one has more stupid bookings in the last 18 months than Colback . Dissent , kicking the ball away , dangerous lunges…you name it really so I think we can let Varane off a couple here and there .

If we continue to play Varane and Field together, the role and form of Chair becomes even more crucial, as he's our creative catalyst, playmaker, and little wizard who gets us up the pitch. That said, what's pleasing is Field's eye for a goal or two in recent weeks and happy knack for getting on the end of things. On the other hand, Varane improving the attacking side of his game and his shooting accuracy would massively help this team, and I hope he can. Morgan, meanwhile, we must not overwork.

It's a tribute to his work rate, I reckon - he's here, he's there, he's every f"cling where.

Meanwhile, no Madsen thread can be seen at all. I reckon there's one out there, but it's virtually invisible.

Erratic passing? Yesterday his pass success stat was 94%, the best on the pitch.

But that depends on the type of pass. There is a difference if your 94% is passing like Hoddle or Wilkins than say, knocking it back to the centre back 5 yards away.
