Watford - giving it the biggun’ 18:44 - Jan 1 with 8549 viewsHastings_Hoops

Have I missed something somewhere? From the Watford message boards, Watford seem to have a misplaced impression that they are bigger than QPR and somehow our ‘cup final’. A very strange team and lack of self awareness indeed.

Always been a bit of an irrelevance to me. Provincial side that did amazing things back in the Elton days to get upto where they are now, but the fixture means nothing more than playing Oxford, Bolton, Shrewsbury etc etc

At least we only lost 3-0 at Wembley (or so I’ve heard, seen no hard evidence).

I mean, of course we aren’t rivals, but some QPR ‘fans’ attacked a Dad and his disabled son yesterday and smashed their people carrier because it had a Watford sticker on it apparently.

If that's correct, appalling and shameful.

I remember the corrugated iron tunnel from the railway halt through the allotments to the away end in the 80s, like we were going to a Stalag!

There was a frustrating period in the early 80s when both clubs were on the up but we just couldn’t beat them. Their football was pretty grim under Taylor, but Venables couldn’t find the antidote and they did have John Barnes. They were press darlings as the “family club” helped by Taylor and Elton’s profile, which grated on me as a punky herbert but which I have a lot of appreciation for now when the alternatives were singing about the Munich air disaster, unemployment or threatening to kill people.

Johnny Byrne broke the spell when he scored in the Milk Cup there after Paul Barron saved a penalty. They rolled over every time for a while after that.

I remember the 'allotment walk' before there was any corrugation, just cabbages, otherwise known as the Rookery.

Poll: Thank God The Seaons Over.

Some nice areas around it but it’s always been a bit of a dump IMO. A more expensive dump than when I grew up there.

As a resident here for 25 odd years . It’s no better or worse than any other suburban town .
Town centre is a non descript concrete jungle but it’s got some very prosperous areas.
People are as good as gold . I should know . I married one.
Their fans thought are very weird ,odd bunch .
Passive would be the best way to describe them.

The real kicker is that even then, when Graham Taylor was managing them and Terry Venables managed us, both clubs were shaking football up a bit, the playing styles of both clubs were a sort of battle for the soul of English football - we still didn't give a stuff about them, the only local derby that mattered back then was North Battersea.

Only ever met one Watford fan in my life. Lived in London my whole life, pretty much, and don't even recall seeing any in public (bar when we play them, obviously).

To be honest, I was more bothered about beating Norwich than Watford. I'm not sure what it is about Norwich but I see them as more of a rival than Watford. Watford are nothing.

I am always surprised when Watford come to play at Loftus Road how much animosity they had towards us. It felt like they really cared about beating us so if anything it's more a cup final for them.

Feels to me all this cup final malarkey only started once Troy Deeney said it and the fans just follow it like sheep. Not a single QPR fan i know has felt Watford were anything such like or remotely close.

Deeney's Cup Final was filling in a couple of students outside a nightclub.

With regards to the "smashed up car"

Im guessing this is the same car I saw, I mean I'm not condoning what happened but driving up Ellerslie Road whilst hundreds of fans are coming out is a silly thing to do and extremely dangerous in itself, not even sure how he was allowed to do it.
Maybe something happened after I had passed it but all I saw was a guy having a pop at him through his window.

Well, I said apparently because the incident details came second hand, so please excuse me if the facts aren’t right but a couple of things…

1) I think disabled fans both home and away are advised to park on Blomfontaine so whatever happens they need to pass fans coming out the stadium.

2) This is the damage. Wasn’t just a bloke getting shouted at.

3) We won, and even if we didn’t why attack anyone?

4) Disabled. Children.

I was there the day Johnny Byrne got that goal and I remember walking through allotments too. I often wonder when I go there now where are the bloody allotments. For some time I thought I must of dreamt it or smoked something a bit potent as I used to in them days.

I have a friend who lives a couple of streets away from Watford's ground. She says one of the roads beside the stadium has been renamed. Yellow Brick Road.

Yellow.
Brick.
Road.

They're not even the biggest club in Watford. I actually reckon there's more QPR fans in that part of the woods than them
