Let's put this to bed... on 20:26 - Jan 1 by hoops_legend | Guys.. come onā¦ we do this every few months with him Heās a hard working decent player but he has too many limitations and until last 3-4 games his return on goals and assists was awful. Infact probably even bad return on his chances created Last few games this has improved and this is a confidence thing and hopefully some coaching but letās take it one at a time as I still donāt see him getting more Than 5 goals a season or bucket loads of assists Having said all above - he is top lad and plays his heart out for qpr so I would have him in [Post edited 1 Jan 20:31]

I'd agree with this and think this is thankfully quite a measured thread about opinions. Smyth's decision making has improved markedly the last 5-odd games and we need him to keep it up and show it's not just a flash in the pan. What I would note that hasn't been said so far is that along with his improved end product, he seems to be doing far fewer of those stupid dives he used to carry out a few times every game. Maybe both those things go hand in hand with improved confidence in himself. Props to him for presumably putting in the with on the training pitch to improve his game

Let's put this to bed... on 14:01 - Jan 2 with 947 views | Paddyhoops | I said at the start of the season he was a leauge one player . He has everything. Heās pacy and he gives 100 % . Unfortunately heās decision making and crossing have been poor . That has improved dramatically and Marti has definitely started playing to his strengths. Stick the ball in front him and let him take people on . Give it to him when his static he struggles . Iām glad he is proving me wrong . Heās a lovely bloke and loves playing for us and heās starting to thrive.

Totally agree. Smyth has improved but this is based on a very small sample size. For some perspective: Dembele achieved the same assists and goals as Smyth, in just 10 league games, which is hugely impressive for a novice in this division. Yet the consensus held by some was that Dembele wasn't quite ready yet and needed to be rested, prior to his injury. Dare I say it, but Paal is only one goal assist behind Smyth in the league, so I take it that he's also not having a bad season either. Let's leave aside the comparisons to Chair, Sinton, Thomas et al, as they are just fanciful. Interesting how the same/similar levels of contributions from our players in the league, can be perceived so differently. Keep it up Paul. [Post edited 2 Jan 18:00]

Smyth should not be judged on just goals and assists. He offers a lot more defensive support than any of the other attacking midfielders and his pace and directness is a constant outlet for us.

I completely agree and would add that the confidence and go forward attitude he brings to the team benefits everyone (fans and players). Perhaps we should turn it around and ask where the attacking intent would be coming from if he wasnāt in the team ? I throughly enjoyed watching him ārideā Jimmy after the header and between the two of them you have the clubās current āculture guardians,ā or whatever Gaz called them. Really hard to manufacture culture and itās so much more powerful when it comes naturally and when it does, we should make the most of it because it can be transformational when it kicks in.
| Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

I would love it if we could sign Doak or similar but letās face it, we wonāt be doing that for some time so letās support the people we have and their attitude towards the club and fans. Would you rather have someone like that Sainz guy from Norwich ? Or Cantwell or similar ? [Post edited 2 Jan 20:07]

Let's put this to bed... on 23:28 - Jan 2 with 451 views | Markofthegrove | A couple of things. Watch a game where he is subbed off. Then watch the opposition fullback IMMEDIATELY, push 10 yards up the pitch high and wide. That doesn't just effect the ability to play down the right channel and wing, but it affects the midfield as opppsition teams can show inside alot more. Also, the manager has improved him. But the manager also understand the tactical advantage pace gives you. Pace is expensive, even in the championship. So when you have a player like Smyth, as a manager you understand that you need to work with them to improve them. Credit to the player and the manager.
Let's put this to bed... on 00:31 - Jan 3 with 406 views | queensparker | Got to think of Smyth as a defender as well as an attacker in the team and in that role heās been outstanding - his engine is unbelievable That slide tackle against the Watford sub that led to him moaning about it was wonderful A QPR team with an Irish spine is always good news and Jimmy Dunne and Paul Smyth are bringing it back
