Ashby 17:42 - Dec 14 with 4715 viewsstainrods_elbow

Must come out after today and Oxford, regardless of injuries/results. Another absolutely indefensible performance today. I know Marti's stretched, but Paal should have been on at half-time, if not sooner. In the words of Roy Keane, your eyes don't lie to you.

Ashby has been pretty poor for us; it is unarguable.

He isn’t young, and he seems incapable of playing a 10 yard pass to feet.

Paal is going through the motions.

The situation is entirely down to Nourry. It is spectacularly incompetent.

Paal came on and the problems ceased.
I really want him to do well but it’s gone beyond a joke now.
A complete liability.

He does some good stuff but then can be very poor. I’d keep him as a reserve full back to Dunne and Paal.

I don’t normally watch the warm ups but let me know what good stuff he does during these for the record

He's been poor the last couple of games, and obviously isn't a long-term solution at left back, but he does look to get forward quickly, which I suspect is part of the reason he's in the side. We now have a fantastic base to our side but we still generally don't get up the pitch quickly enough. As a former winger, Ashby can definitely do that (when he doesn't lose the ball).

Ashby on 08:07 - Dec 15 with 1121 viewsWilkinswatercarrier

Yes, we definitely need Paal back in. Yet again, though, people moaning about the symptom, not the cause of why Ashby is even playing left back.

Start the season with one left back, and this is what happens. That is indefensible. So, to everyone slagging Ashby off (who I agree has been poor) I'm afraid it's tough luck. With Paal out (again) he's our only option, so we should get behind because we need him.

Odds on Paal getting injured again as his contract expiry date nears?

Nourry out/Marti in.

Lest we forget the last two right back we signed to that position who couldn't play there either.

Cannon & Santos.

Cannon had the excuse of a multi million pound legal problem hanging over his head to be fair.

Ashby is NOT a left back, but if anyone on here thinks Paal is the answer f**k off.

All to do with recruitment. Paal is never going to sign a new contract and has, basically, given up on QPR. An average player at best, he's downed tools and is the worst definition of a "professional".

Need a new LB in on the 1st January.

Shocking how we ended up here, but here we are...

I’d better f*ck off then. I rate Paal and I think he made a difference when he came on. He is obviously not 100% fit hence being on the bench. He’ll be back when he is fully fit.

Frankly, this is a nasty thread. Ashby tried his best and MC plays him out of position as he offers more of a physical presence than Saito. He didn’t have a great game but not many did.I also like his attitude for a loan player - never moans when he is subbed. He shouldn’t be singled out when the midfield and strikers couldn’t put 2 passes together.

I've said a couple of times that I am gobsmacked at a recruitment policy that brings in 2 fullbacks in support of a centreback playing out of position, whilst simultaneously failing to sign anyone to play on the opposite side - even as cover!

Marti wants to play with a back four: in my opinion, that requires 2 x starting fullbacks plus cover. To end up with such an imbalance is pretty poor. Paal suffers from not being Willo but he is at least a Bidwell-type of steady performer. Right now, that's a good thing, especially compared to the alternative. Ashby has his moments but I can't blame him for being here or for playing: those aren't his call really. He can own his mistakes but I see a player giving the lot and learning on the job.

'What do we want? We don't know! When do we want it? Now!'

Plus Nourry spent all summer trying to offload Paal…

He is doing a decent job on the left whilst Paal gets up to speed. You can see he is playing out of position as he favours moving in field and spreading the ball to the right. Much rather have him on the left than Santos who had a mare against Middlesbrough.

Ashby on 23:17 - Dec 14 by Myke

I don't like digging any player out, when I never played at any decent level at all. But I would not be inclined to accept that you cannot play the opposite side to your strong foot. Denis Irwin made a career out of it.
To say he has no ability is disingenuous, but coming from a Premier League club, he should be able to deal with Championship wingers. Also, he has played several games at LB now, so presumably he trains there during the week - he should be doing better.
(Beck scored for Blackburn today too

Myke there will always be examples of right footed players who could play on the left, especially at European Cup and international level. Their all round ability and competency makes them overcome the disadvantages. Irwin's time was quite a few years back and maybe he wouldn't be so effective in the game now, with current tactics and even higher fitness and energy levels.
The Championship is a lesser level and virtually every player is one footed. Some are better than others with their 'swinger' but it is still a weakness. Ashby is very poor on his left, constantly wants to come inside and is pushed further in by opponents pressing him.
Morrison isn't too clever with his left either. Imho, it's a huge problem which thanks to outstanding cover from Cook, Field and Varane, Morrison's positive attributes and Nardi's saves as well as a huge slice of luck we have got away with recently.
Other than this issue though, I think Ashby had been ok. I think he has defended better than Pal when he was last starting. Pal is undoubtedly better though, when going forward on the left.

I think thats harsh ,
He came over here because of Beale when his partner was pregnant. Beale left after a few months . Amongst all of the others who downed tools at that point he was available and played throughout Critchley Ainsworth and now Marti .
He has scored some important goals in a team that doesnt score many . He also has a decent amount of assists to his name .
We spent all summer trying to offload him , then find we have no LB alternative . He is a "proffessional " he plays for money . I think he has acted like one in his time here and its unfair to dig him out for trying to get the best deal for his future.

If Paal is fit then obviously he plays. Without the ball the team were magnificent again to a man, disciplined, threw bodies at everything with the ball we were terrible particularly out wide, Smyth (goal apart) and Saito with the ball were very poor. Anderson (I actually thought we missed Madsen just for ball retention) worked super hard off the ball but always isolated on it. Personally I think Field and Varane playing together contributes to this, too similar and both too deep yet both magnificent defensively. We were over all very leggy. 30% possession a game is going to do that in a 3 game week

I should know . I’m still in Bristol.
I know he’s on the wrong side of our defence but he constantly gives the ball away and has done so in our last two games .
Paal’s introduction pretty much solved the problem straight away .
We have little or no options on that side and it’s the clubs recruitment that’s to blame.

Risking being contrarian again, I think Ashby is ‘fine’ for what we need from him. He’s pretty standard PL2 player who has been through 3 academies and the most taxing part of being a footballer was comparing sleeve tattoos with opposing strikers and discussing who’s G Wagon is whose in the car park.

He’s now belatedly in his early 20s having to try and play some football and obviously it’s all moved a bit fast for him even at RB, let alone at LB which he obviously isn’t. Last season this role was being filled by Kakay though and Ashby is many multiples better than him and costing us nothing thanks to Jamie Reuben.

As others have said, the bigger issue is the club bringing in a ‘development’ full back in Santos who Cifuentes within 30 minutes had decided was never a wing back as long as there was a ‘y’ in the day and so necessitated going out and getting another. At the same time the club very happily let all and sundry know that Paal wasn’t wanted anymore but then 1. Couldn’t fine anyone to take him and 2. Couldn’t get a new LB to replace him, so now we have a guy who Cifuentes was always critical of having to play whilst completely and irrevocably checked out..

Strange thread which at times has got oddly aggressive and bitchy.

It’s just opinions and just because they differ doesn’t people should f*ck off or that we are all blaming everything on Harrison Ashby . Some strange responses really.

I think playing out of position does make a difference to a players performance (see Larkeche v Blackburn last season) . Body shape, receiving the ball , distributing the ball are all impacted . He has a lack of experience too and in the cold light of day maybe we should be taking this into consideration. One other thing is that on the right , Smyth stays wide and is always available to receive the ball . On the left Saito drifts in time after time so often , not always , but often when Ashby gets the ball he looks up to see no one in front of him so his limited options and already uncomfortable…he loses possession.

However , playing out of position affects players less the more talented they are , so of course we have to question Ashby’s ability . He gave the ball away so often and even defensively yesterday he was starting to get pulled over the place in the second half . He looked shattered but that’s no excuse . His performance was very very poor.
And that’s just how I see it as a fan. Not viewing him as inexperienced or out of position…just as the eye sees it. He was shocking .
That’s not me ‘jumping’ on him. Just a fans view.
Being critical of players is a fans perogative if they are not up to standard as long as it’s not personal .
Do I think Paal is the answer? No.
Been critical of him since pretty much when he joined and not really changed my opinion. He’s not good enough. Gets targeted and not great on one on ones and clearly has his nose put out of joint which is understandable.
But when he came on yesterday you could see the difference it made in the simple matter of someone willing and able to use their left foot . We could finally play on the left (Chair staying more left than Saito may have helped that too).

As far as the recruitment goes, we all know and see the issues at striker and left back most prominently . It’s negligent to be in the position we have been in recently . Scandalous really.
But we have all said that.
What happens on the pitch is immediate and happening in front of our eyes so that’s what we will comment on in the here and now.
The thread was about Ashby being poor and he was. As I said I think he actually has a lot going for him and will be a decent championship player . But probably no more. In that respect he reminds me a bit of Laird. Looks good at times ….but maybe mollycoddled by a bigger club who have actually not done anything for his career.

Anyway I’ll shut the hell up now .
I just think there is a middle ground once again to be had.

Ashby is pretty poor in all what he does.....yes, it may make it tough for him playing on the left but he still needs to do better. Posters go on about his left foot but when he uses his right foot, & he does that 90% of the time, he still passes the ball to the opposition an unbelievable amount of times. Very lucky man, and that's what he is a 23 (??) year old man, to be playing this level of football & being signed by a Premier Club - I dread to think what money he has earned from the game!!!! Conference standard basically.

I would be interested in seeing why MC picks him ahead of Fox whilst Paal is unfit.

However, Ashby does not need to be singled out. Koli did nothing, Saito had probably his worst game, Anderson was very poor etc. etc..

I'd like to see Ashby given a run at right back, just so we can actually see what he is actually like when playing in his correct position.
I've got a feeling he might be pretty good and if we could sign him permanently then we should.
He was very highly thought of at West Ham and they did everything to keep him. So he must have something about him.
