Burgers 12:12 - Nov 27 with 7398 viewsRangersDave

Hi everyone,

Just popped into Maccy D's for a convenience burger and was shocked to find that their burgers are like 1mm wafers, and over all the burger and bun is around 25% smaller for the same money. in relation to the one i had last week!

Anyway, i thought a burger thread on here was needed, so i can canvas you all as to your thoughts regarding your best fast food, artisan, value burger around.

There used to be a great place in Liverpool that was an artisan place and called 'Almost famous' and had great beers, great drinks for the kids, and above all else fantastic burgers

Locations please and opinions on your favourite place

I live one minute away from them lol.
Had a couple of kebabs but never tried the burger: sounds like I’m missing out.

Another vote for Honest as the best high street chain.

People love five guys but as far as I can tell it's premium pricing for environment and food only slightly better than mcdonalds.

I work at the top of the hill up from East Finchley station, and we regularly pop down to get food from there. The Double Chilli Cheeseburger is awesome, and so is the Brudis Burger.

In fact, I am the opposite and have never tried one of their kebabs but some of the guys at work have and said they are nice.

In the middle of nowhere Indiana at the moment, had a burger yesterday in the one town which was a 20 minute drive away which is one of the best I've ever had. Proper rural bar, full of neons and a wide assortment of mounted animals.

Chain wise though I agree with a lot of the comments, love a five guys. Used to live across the street from one and must have contributed to me putting on at least a stone.

Wimpy was always a nice burger, but what they charge now is way over the top.

Best burger place I know is Joe & Co in Fulham.

I’m a bit of a burger connoisseur, Honest burger is very, very good. The best I’ve tried are Beefy Boys but they are based in Hereford with only a a few branches over in this direction.

5 Guys is over priced and over rated. Same with Nandos. I'd rather have chicken from our local Pepe's . Also German Donna kebab is kinda weird with that waffle thing rather than pitta bread.
On the subject of kebabs (sorry i know this is a burger thread), its worth checking out Cappadocia restaurant in Kingston.. Turkish cuisine. Amazing food, massive portions too. Im not sure if its a restaurant chain but id recommend it.

Don't think it's a chain, but i'm with you...it's very very good.

Took the family to Christophers in Covent Garden last week for my sons birthday.

I had the Wagu burger.
Hands down the worst burger I've ever had, served to me by miserable unsmiling staff.
Brioche bun, dry burger, a leaf of lettuce, 2 thin slices of tomato, a blob of Mayo.
£26 ta.

And chips were £6 extra and weren't served with the burger, had to wait for them to come out after. And we had to ask for sauce, salt and pepper.
Then they had the cheek to try and add 13.5% 'discretionary service charge' on the bill.
I cant write on the forum what I said to the unsmiling server, but i didn't pay it.

Never go there.

Nando’s is a case study of venture capital destroying a business.

When it first starting exploding it was pretty average quality food but you could get in and out for £10 if you tried.

The VC growth plans far exceeded supply however and they changed several years ago to terrible quality broiler chicken whisky whacking the prices up. You’d be lucky to get out for under £20 these days..

This seems to be giving some support to my kebab shop burger theory.

Add in a bit of German engineering and doner know-how. Not hard to see how that could be good, will probably make a trip.

Nando’s has gone to pot and many of the restaurants are grubby.
The bottled sauce you can buy works really well on the bbq.

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

My wife is the house keeper to one of the guys who started Nando's, weirdly enough.
South African. Ive done some work for him at his house. Lovely guy, but tight as. Very tricky to deal with, as you can imagine. They now own loads of those high street restaurants.
This is just a guess on my part , but their bottled sauces will obviously be making them a tidy profit so i wonder if they've taken their eye off their Nandos restaurants ? The one in Shepherds Bush in particular is ropey. The toilets always seems flooded with piss.

I always thought they were South African! I didn't live here when they started up and Clive was getting wined and dined by level headed local bigwigs.

Went to one for the first time on the first night in Cape Town in 2010 for the World Cup. The wife had a terrible cold. Absolutely mental Dutch fans in a good humoured way.

I still think they're not bad but don't go in very often I must admit.

Its all about the sauce. Anyone can cook chicken. Sprinkle that medium/hot/very hot/garlic & Herbs sauce on it.. and voila . Got yourselves a Nandos night in.. :)

They do have a few decent sides though, semi reasonably priced booze, fairly comfortable. I do like the multiple sauce options. Wouldn't be surprised if the one by us closes.

How bored are we man?! :)

If anyone happens to be up Doncaster way, Urban Fresh Burgers are the business. Like 5 Guys only (slightly) cheaper and in my opinion tastier. They also use proper bacon if you want to add it, rather than the crispy bacon granule type stuff they use in 5 Guys which I find a disappointment. Really good shakes too, but alas no peanut butter ones.

The Munch Plug, Bow.

Special mention for the chicken burgers there.
